Aerothermal submodels used in analytical combustor models are analyzed. The models described include turbulence and scalar transport, gaseous full combustion, spray evaporation/combustion, soot formation and oxidation, and radiation. The computational scheme is discussed in relation to boundary conditions and convergence criteria. Also presented is the data base for benchmark quality test cases and an analysis of simple flows
WHAM Observations of H-alpha Emission from High Velocity Clouds in the M, A, and C Complexes
The first observations of the recently completed Wisconsin H-Alpha Mapper
(WHAM) facility include a study of emission lines from high velocity clouds in
the M, A, and C complexes, with most of the observations on the M I cloud. We
present results including clear detections of H-alpha emission from all three
complexes with intensities ranging from 0.06 R to 0.20 R. In every observed
direction where there is significant high velocity H I gas seen in the 21 cm
line we have found associated ionized hydrogen emitting the H-alpha line. The
velocities of the H-alpha and 21 cm emission are well correlated in every case
except one, but the intensities are not correlated. There is some evidence that
the ionized gas producing the H-alpha emission envelopes the 21 cm emitting
neutral gas but the H-alpha "halo", if present, is not large. If the H-alpha
emission arises from the photoionization of the H I clouds, then the implied
Lyman continuum flux F_{LC} at the location of the clouds ranges from 1.3 to
4.2 x 10^5 photons cm^{-2} s^{-1}. If, on the other hand, the ionization is due
to a shock arising from the collision of the high-velocity gas with an ambient
medium in the halo, then the density of the pre-shocked gas can be constrained.
We have also detected the [S II] 6716 angstrom line from the M I cloud and have
evidence that the [S II] to H-alpha ratio varies with location on the cloud.Comment: 32 pages, 18 figures, to appear in ApJ (Sept. 10, 1998
Evaluation of subgrid-scale turbulence models using a fully simulated turbulent flow
An exact turbulent flow field was calculated on a three-dimensional grid with 64 points on a side. The flow simulates grid-generated turbulence from wind tunnel experiments. In this simulation, the grid spacing is small enough to include essentially all of the viscous energy dissipation, and the box is large enough to contain the largest eddy in the flow. The method is limited to low-turbulence Reynolds numbers, in our case R sub lambda = 36.6. To complete the calculation using a reasonable amount of computer time with reasonable accuracy, a third-order time-integration scheme was developed which runs at about the same speed as a simple first-order scheme. It obtains this accuracy by saving the velocity field and its first-time derivative at each time step. Fourth-order accurate space-differencing is used
WHAM Observations of H-alpha from High-Velocity Clouds: Are They Galactic or Extragalactic?
It has been suggested that high velocity clouds may be distributed throughout
the Local Group and are therefore not in general associated with the Milky Way
galaxy. With the aim of testing this hypothesis, we have made observations in
the H-alpha line of high velocity clouds selected as the most likely candidates
for being at larger than average distances. We have found H-alpha emission from
4 out of 5 of the observed clouds, suggesting that the clouds under study are
being illuminated by a Lyman continuum flux greater than that of the
metagalactic ionizing radiation. Therefore, it appears likely that these clouds
are in the Galactic halo and not distributed throughout the Local Group.Comment: 12 pages, 5 eps figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter
Digital Preservation and Access of Natural Resources Documents
Digitization and preservation of natural resource documents were reviewed and the current status of digitization presented for a North American university. It is important to present the status of the digitation process for natural resources and to advocate for increased collections of digital material for ease of reference and exchange of information. Digital collections need to include both published documents and ancillary material for research projects and data for future use and interpretation. The methods in this paper can be applied to other natural resource collections increasing their use and distribution. The process of decision making for documents and their preservation and inclusion in ScholarWorks is presented as a part of the Forest Sciences Commons as a subset of the Life Sciences Commons of the Digital Commons Open Network launched and maintained by bepress. Digitization has increased the roles and skillsets needed for librarians and from libraries. This creates new challenges and opportunities for the library as publisher and as an advocate for open access. Digital curation melds together digitization and knowledge management and enhances community engagement. Digitization of collections are reviewed and natural resource documentation presented for faculty publications, Research Projects and Centers, eBooks, Journals, Galleries and electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs). Recommendations are made to increase the digital curation of the collection by encouraging community participation and use. Digital archives are important to natural resource professionals as society-ready natural resource graduates need to deal effectively with complex ecological, economic and social issues of current natural resources management. Natural resource research for the future needs to ensure that professionals have a greater breath of knowledge as they interpret and apply new knowledge, understanding, and technology to complex, transdisciplinary social and biological issues and challenges
The X-ray Iron Emission from Tycho's Supernova Remnant
We present the results of broadband fits to the X-ray spectrum of Tycho's
supernova remnant obtained by the Solid-State Imaging Spectrometers on the ASCA
Observatory. We use single-temperature, single-ionization-age, nonequilibrium
ionization models to characterize the ejecta and the blast-shocked interstellar
medium. Based on the Fe K emission at 6.5 keV, previous spectral studies have
suggested that the Fe ejecta in this Type Ia remnant are stratified interior to
the other ejecta. The ASCA data provide important constraints from the Fe L
emission near 1 keV as well as the Fe K emission. We find that the simplest
models, with emission from the ejecta and blast wave each at a single
temperature and ionization age, severely underestimate the Fe K flux. We show
that there is little Fe emission associated with the Si and S ejecta shell. The
blast-shocked interstellar medium has abundances roughly 0.3 times the solar
value, while the ejecta, with the exception of Fe, have relative abundances
that are typical of Type Ia supernovae. The addition of another component of Fe
emission, which we associate with ejecta, at a temperature at least two times
higher and an ionization age 100 times lower than the Si ejecta, does
provide a good fit to the spectrum. This model is consistent with X-ray imaging
results. Although fluorescent emission from dust in the remnant may contribute
to the Fe K flux, we conclude that it is unlikely to dominate.Comment: 23 pages, LaTex; 4 postscript figures, 2 postscript tables. To appear

L\'evy-like behavior in deterministic models of intelligent agents exploring heterogeneous environments
Many studies on animal and human movement patterns report the existence of
scaling laws and power-law distributions. Whereas a number of random walk
models have been proposed to explain observations, in many situations
individuals actually rely on mental maps to explore strongly heterogeneous
environments. In this work we study a model of a deterministic walker, visiting
sites randomly distributed on the plane and with varying weight or
attractiveness. At each step, the walker minimizes a function that depends on
the distance to the next unvisited target (cost) and on the weight of that
target (gain). If the target weight distribution is a power-law, , in some range of the exponent , the foraging medium induces
movements that are similar to L\'evy flights and are characterized by
non-trivial exponents. We explore variations of the choice rule in order to
test the robustness of the model and argue that the addition of noise has a

Fully-Coupled Simulation of Cosmic Reionization. I: Numerical Methods and Tests
We describe an extension of the Enzo code to enable fully-coupled radiation
hydrodynamical simulation of inhomogeneous reionization in large cosmological volumes with thousands to millions of point sources. We
solve all dynamical, radiative transfer, thermal, and ionization processes
self-consistently on the same mesh, as opposed to a postprocessing approach
which coarse-grains the radiative transfer. We do, however, employ a simple
subgrid model for star formation which we calibrate to observations. Radiation
transport is done in the grey flux-limited diffusion (FLD) approximation, which
is solved by implicit time integration split off from the gas energy and
ionization equations, which are solved separately. This results in a faster and
more robust scheme for cosmological applications compared to the earlier
method. The FLD equation is solved using the hypre optimally scalable geometric
multigrid solver from LLNL. By treating the ionizing radiation as a grid field
as opposed to rays, our method is scalable with respect to the number of
ionizing sources, limited only by the parallel scaling properties of the
radiation solver. We test the speed and accuracy of our approach on a number of
standard verification and validation tests. We show by direct comparison with
Enzo's adaptive ray tracing method Moray that the well-known inability of FLD
to cast a shadow behind opaque clouds has a minor effect on the evolution of
ionized volume and mass fractions in a reionization simulation validation test.
We illustrate an application of our method to the problem of inhomogeneous
reionization in a 80 Mpc comoving box resolved with Eulerian grid
