Curvature Oscillations in Modified Gravity and High Energy Cosmic Rays
It is shown that F(R)-modified gravitational theories lead to curvature
oscillations in astrophysical systems with rising energy density. The frequency
and the amplitude of such oscillations could be very high and would lead to
noticeable production of energetic cosmic ray particles.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, author's affiliation is correcte
Jeans Instability in Classical and Modified Gravity
Gravitational instability in classical Jeans theory, General Relativity, and
modified gravity is considered. The background density increase leads to a
faster growth of perturbations in comparison with the standard theory. The
transition to the Newtonian gauge in the case of coordinate dependent
background metric functions is studied. For modified gravity a new high
frequency stable solution is found
Cosmological evolution in R^2 gravity
The Universe evolution during the radiation-dominated epoch in the
R^2-extended gravity theory is considered. The equations of motion for R and H
are solved analytically and numerically. The particle production rate by the
oscillating curvature is calculated in one-loop approximation and the back
reaction of particle production on the evolution of R is taken into account.
Possible implications of the model for cosmological creation of non-thermal
dark matter is discussed.Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures. Several references and criticism added. As

Long term results of single high dose Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy in the treatment of primary lung tumors
Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) is a standard treatment for inoperable early-stage NSCLC, with local control rates comparable to surgical series. Promising results have been achieved utilizing a high single-dose schedule. The aim of our study was to evaluate long-term local control and toxicity in a series of patients treated with SBRT delivered in a single dose of 30 Gy. 44 patients affected by early stage NSCLC were treated with SBRT delivered in a single dose of 30 Gy. Survival and prognostic factors were retrospectively evaluated. Median follow-up was 34 months (range 3â81). Three- and 5-year local progression-free survival (LPFS) were 87.8% and 87.8% respectively (median 30 months; range 6â81 months), 3- and 5-year OS and CSS were 64.9% and 36.9%, 80.9% and 65.5%, respectively. Two (4.6%) cases of grade 3 pneumonitis occurred. At the univariate analysis lesion diameter †25 mm was predictive of better 5-year LPFS (95.8% versus 56.3%; p = 0.003) and 5-year PFS (69.8% versus 27.8%; p = 0.002). The results of our study indicated a high local control, survival and tolerability after a long-term follow-up with the use of SBRT 30 Gy single dose. Further prospective studies could better define the role of this regimen
Analysis of Italian isolates of Pantoea stewartii subsp. stewartii and development of a real-time PCR-based diagnostic method
Pantoea stewartii subsp. stewartii (Pss) causes Stewart's vascular wilt of maize, and it is responsible for serious crop losses. Pss is indigenous to North America and spreads with maize seeds. The presence of Pss has been notified in Italy since 2015. The risk assessment of the entry of Pss in the EU from the United States through seed trade is in the order of magnitude of hundred introductions per year. Several molecular or serological tests were developed for the detection of Pss and used as official analysis for the certification of commercial seeds. However, some of these tests lack adequate specificity, not allowing to correctly discriminate Pss from P. stewartii subsp. indologenes (Psi). Psi is occasionally present in maize seeds and is avirulent for maize. In this study, several Italian isolates of Pss recovered in 2015 and 2018 have been characterized by molecular, biochemical, and pathogenicity tests; moreover, their genomes have been assembled through MinION and Illumina-sequencing procedures. Genomic analysis reveals multiple introgression events. Exploiting these results, a new primer combination has been defined and verified by real-time PCR, allowing the development of a specific molecular test able to detect the presence of Pss down to the concentration of 103â CFU/ml in spiked samples of maize seed extracts. Due to the high analytical sensitivity and specificity achieved with this test, the detection of Pss has been improved disentangling the inconclusive results in Pss maize seed diagnosis, overcoming its misidentification in place of Psi. Altogether, this test addresses the critical issue associated with maize seeds imported from regions where Stewart's disease is endemic
Mirtazapine in the treatment of essential tremor: an open-label, observer-blind study
Essential tremor (ET) is the most common movement disorder in the adult population. At present ET treatment shows limited efficacy, particularly in patients with severe and disabling symptoms. This study evaluates the clinical efficacy of mirtazapine in an untreated ET patient population
