    Spectral analysis of electric current in LEDs Lamps

    This work presents an analysis of electric current signal in LEDs lamps. Electrical signals are measured in two circuits, one that corresponds to the commercial LEDs lamp connected to AC source and another one incorporating a control system into the LEDs lamp. Such control system works as a power factor correction (PFC) and is designed by using a boost converter and a current controller. Signals are analyzed in terms of frequency-based representations oriented to estimate the power spectral density (PSD). In this study, two approaches are used: Discrete Fourier transform and periodogram. The goal of this work is to show that more complex PSD estimation methods can provide useful information for studying the quality energy in electric power systems, which is comparable with that provided by traditional approaches. In particular, periodogram shows to be a suitable alternative exhibiting meaningful changes along its spectral power plotting when analyzing the circuit without applying PFC. As a result of this work, a set of LEDs lamps characteristics is introduced, including a novel periodicity factor

    Membrane trafficking as an active regulator of constitutively secreted cytokines

    Item does not contain fulltextImmune-cell activation by inflammatory stimuli triggers the transcription and translation of large amounts of cytokines. The transport of newly synthesized cytokines to the plasma membrane by vesicular trafficking can be rate-limiting for the production of these cytokines, and immune cells upregulate their exocytic machinery concomitantly with increased cytokine expression in order to cope with the increasing demand for trafficking. Whereas it is logical that trafficking is rate-limiting for regulated secretion where an intracellular pool of molecules is waiting to be released, the reason for this is not obvious for constitutively secreted cytokines, such as interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-12 (IL-12) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha). These constitutively secreted cytokines are primarily regulated at the transcriptional and/or translational level but mounting evidence presented here shows that cells might also increase or decrease the rate of post-Golgi cytokine trafficking to modulate their production. Therefore, in this Hypothesis, we ask the question: why is there a need to limit the trafficking of constitutively secreted cytokines? We propose a model where cells monitor and adjust their production rate of cytokines by sensing the intracellular level of cytokines while they are in transit to the plasma membrane. This self-regulation of cytokine production could prevent an overshooting response of acute-phase cytokines, such as IL-6, IL-12 and TNF-alpha, upon acute infection

    Actualmente, en el departamento de Nariño se está ejecutando proyectos de investigación en el campo de las energías alternativas con alto impacto social, liderados por el Departamento de Electrónica de la Universidad de Nariño, como institución comprometida con el desarrollo de la región. Como resultado de estos proyectos de investigación, se ha identificado zonas rurales aisladas que no tienen acceso a la energía eléctrica, lo que les impide acceder a los nuevos desarrollos tecnológicos. En el caso de las instituciones educativas en dichas zonas, algunas cuentan con equipos de cómputo que los energizan por pocas horas, dependiendo del combustible que dispongan y otros, simplemente los guardan para utilizarlos cuando tengan un eventual suministro de energía en el futuro

    Reverse Signaling by MHC-I Molecules in Immune and Non-Immune Cell Types

    Major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules are well-known for their role in antigen (cross-) presentation, thereby functioning as key players in the communication between immune cells, for example dendritic cells (DCs) and T cells, or immune cells and their targets, such as T cells and virus-infected or tumor cells. However, much less appreciated is the fact that MHC molecules can also act as signaling receptors. In this process, here referred to as reverse MHC class I (MHC-I) signaling, ligation of MHC molecules can lead to signal-transduction and cell regulatory effects in the antigen presenting cell. In the case of MHC-I, reverse signaling can have several outcomes, including apoptosis, migration, induced or reduced proliferation and cytotoxicity towards target cells. Here, we provide an overview of studies showing the signaling pathways and cell outcomes upon MHC-I stimulation in various immune and non-immune cells. Signaling molecules like RAC-alpha serine/threonine-protein kinase (Akt1), extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1/2 (ERK1/2), and nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB) were common signaling molecules activated upon MHC-I ligation in multiple cell types. For endothelial and smooth muscle cells, the in vivo relevance of reverse MHC-I signaling has been established, namely in the context of adverse effects after tissue transplantation. For other cell types, the role of reverse MHC-I signaling is less clear, since aspects like the in vivo relevance, natural MHC-I ligands and the extended downstream pathways are not fully known.The existing evidence, however, suggests that reverse MHC-I signaling is involved in the regulation of the defense against bacterial and viral infections and against malignancies. Thereby, reverse MHC-I signaling is a potential target for therapies against viral and bacterial infections, cancer immunotherapies and management of organ transplantation outcomes

    Novel and conventional inhibitors of canonical autophagy differently affect LC3-associated phagocytosis

    In autophagy, LC3-positive autophagophores fuse and encapsulate the autophagic cargo in a double-membrane structure. In contrast, lipidated LC3 (LC3-II) is directly formed at the phagosomal membrane in LC3-associated phagocytosis (LAP). In this study, we dissected the effects of autophagy inhibitors on LAP. SAR405, an inhibitor of VPS34, reduced levels of LC3-II and inhibited LAP. In contrast, the inhibitors of endosomal acidification bafilomycin A1 and chloroquine increased levels of LC3-II, due to reduced degradation in acidic lysosomes. However, while bafilomycin A1 inhibited LAP, chloroquine did not. Finally, EACC, which inhibits the fusion of autophagosomes with lysosomes, promoted LC3 degradation possibly by the proteasome. Targeting LAP with small molecule inhibitors is important given its emerging role in infectious and autoimmune diseases

    Impact of Mechanical Unloading on Microvasculature and Associated Central Remodeling Features of the Failing Human Heart

    ObjectivesThis study investigates alterations in myocardial microvasculature, fibrosis, and hypertrophy before and after mechanical unloading of the failing human heart.BackgroundRecent studies demonstrated the pathophysiologic importance and significant mechanistic links among microvasculature, fibrosis, and hypertrophy during the cardiac remodeling process. The effect of left ventricular assist device (LVAD) unloading on cardiac endothelium and microvasculature is unknown, and its influence on fibrosis and hypertrophy regression to the point of atrophy is controversial.MethodsHemodynamic data and left ventricular tissue were collected from patients with chronic heart failure at LVAD implant and explant (n = 15) and from normal donors (n = 8). New advances in digital microscopy provided a unique opportunity for comprehensive whole-field, endocardium-to-epicardium evaluation for microvascular density, fibrosis, cardiomyocyte size, and glycogen content. Ultrastructural assessment was done with electron microscopy.ResultsHemodynamic data revealed significant pressure unloading with LVAD. This was accompanied by a 33% increase in microvascular density (p = 0.001) and a 36% decrease in microvascular lumen area (p = 0.028). We also identified, in agreement with these findings, ultrastructural and immunohistochemical evidence of endothelial cell activation. In addition, LVAD unloading significantly increased interstitial and total collagen content without any associated structural, ultrastructural, or metabolic cardiomyocyte changes suggestive of hypertrophy regression to the point of atrophy and degeneration.ConclusionsThe LVAD unloading resulted in increased microvascular density accompanied by increased fibrosis and no evidence of cardiomyocyte atrophy. These new insights into the effects of LVAD unloading on microvasculature and associated key remodeling features might guide future studies of unloading-induced reverse remodeling of the failing human heart

    European and Asian contribution to the genetic diversity of mainland South American chickens

    Chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) from the Americas have long been recognized as descendants of European chickens, transported by early Europeans since the fifteenth century. However, in recent years, a possible pre-Columbian introduction of chickens to South America by Polynesian seafarers has also been suggested. Here, we characterize the mitochondrial control region genetic diversity of modern chicken populations from South America and compare this to a worldwide dataset in order to investigate the potential maternal genetic origin of modern-day chicken populations in South America. The genetic analysis of newly generated chicken mitochondrial control region sequences from South America showed that the majority of chickens from the continent belong to mitochondrial haplogroup E. The rest belongs to haplogroups A, B and C, albeit at very low levels. Haplogroup D, a ubiquitous mitochondrial lineage in Island Southeast Asia and on Pacific Islands is not observed in continental South America. Modern-day mainland South American chickens are, therefore, closely allied with European and Asian chickens. Furthermore, we find high levels of genetic contributions from South Asian chickens to those in Europe and South America. Our findings demonstrate that modern-day genetic diversity of mainland South American chickens appear to have clear European and Asian contributions, and less so from Island Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. Furthermore, there is also some indication that South Asia has more genetic contribution to European chickens than any other Asian chicken populations.Michael B. Herrera, Spiridoula Kraitsek, Jose A.     Resting-state EEG alpha/theta ratio related to neuropsychological testperformance in Parkinson’s Disease

    Q2Q1Objective To determine possible associations of hemispheric-regional alpha/theta ratio (α/θ) with neuropsychological test performance in Parkinson’s Disease (PD) non-demented patients. Methods 36 PD were matched to 36 Healthy Controls (HC). The α/θ in eight hemispheric regions was computed from the relative power spectral density of the resting-state quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG). Correlations between α/θ and performance in several neuropsychological tests were conducted, significant findings were included in a moderation analysis. Results The α/θ in all regions was lower in PD than in HC, with larger effect sizes in the posterior regions. Right parietal, and right and left occipital α/θ had significant positive correlations with performance in Judgement of Line Orientation Test (JLOT) in PD. Adjusted moderation analysis indicated that right, but not left, occipital α/θ influenced the JLOT performance related to PD. Conclusions Reduction of the occipital α/θ, in particular on the right side, was associated with visuospatial performance impairment in PD. Significance Visuospatial impairment in PD, which is highly correlated with the subsequent development of dementia, is reflected in α/θ in the right posterior regions. The right occipital α/θ may represent a useful qEEG marker for evaluating the presence of early signs of cognitive decline in PD and the subsequent risk of dementia.https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5832-0603Revista Internacional - Indexad
