Silicon Pad Detectors for the PHOBOS Experiment at RHIC
The PHOBOS experiment is well positioned to obtain crucial information about
relativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC, combining a multiplicity counter
with a multi-particle spectrometer. The multiplicity arrays will measure the
charged particle multiplicity over the full solid angle. The spectrometer will
be able to identify particles at mid-rapidity. The experiment is constructed
almost exclusively of silicon pad detectors. Detectors of nine different types
are configured in the multiplicity and vertex detector (22,000 channels) and
two multi-particle spectrometers (120,000 channels). The overall layout of the
experiment, testing of the silicon sensors and the performance of the detectors
during the engineering run at RHIC in 1999 are discussed.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, 1 table, Late
Foam Diagram Summation at Finite Temperature
We show that large- theory is not trivial if one accepts the
presence of a tachyon with a truly huge mass, and that it allows exact
calculation. We use it to illustrate how to calculate the exact resummed
pressure at finite temperature and verify that it is infrared and ultraviolet
finite even in the zero-mass case. In 3 dimensions a residual effect of the
resummed infrared divergences is that at low temperature or strong coupling the
leading term in the interaction pressure becomes independent of the coupling
and is 4/5 of the free-field pressure. In 4 dimensions the pressure is
well-defined provided that the temperature is below the tachyon mass. We
examine how rapidly this expansion converges and use our analysis to suggest
how one might reorganise perturbation theory to improve the calculation of the
pressure for the QCD plasma.Comment: 18 pages plain tex, with 8 figures embedded with epsf. Equation

Perturbative Computation of the Gluonic Effective Action via Polyaokov's World-Line Path Integral
The Polyakov world-line path integral describing the propagation of gluon
field quanta is constructed by employing the background gauge fixing method and
is subsequently applied to analytically compute the divergent terms of the one
(gluonic) loop effective action to fourth order in perturbation theory. The
merits of the proposed approach is that, to a given order, it reduces to
performing two integrations, one over a set of Grassmann and one over a set of
Feynman-type parameters through which one manages to accomodate all Feynman
diagrams entering the computation at once.Comment: 21 page
Renormalization Group Approach to Generalized Cosmological models
We revisit here the problem of generalized cosmology using renormalization
group approach. A complete analysis of these cosmologies, where specific models
appear as asymptotic fixed-points, is given here along with their linearized
stability analysis.Comment: 10 pages, to appear in the International Journal of Theoretical

Interacting new agegraphic viscous dark energy with varying
We consider the new agegraphic model of dark energy with a varying
gravitational constant, , in a non-flat universe. We obtain the equation of
state and the deceleration parameters for both interacting and noninteracting
new agegraphic dark energy. We also present the equation of motion determining
the evolution behavior of the dark energy density with a time variable
gravitational constant. Finally, we generalize our study to the case of viscous
new agegraphic dark energy in the presence of an interaction term between both
dark components.Comment: 12 pages, accepted for publication in IJTP (2010
Identified particles in Au+Au collisions at sqrt{s_NN} = 200 GeV
The yields of identified particles have been measured at RHIC for Au+Au
collisions at sqrt{s_NN} = 200 GeV using the PHOBOS spectrometer. The ratios of
antiparticle to particle yields near mid-rapidity are presented. The first
measurements of the invariant yields of charged pions, kaons and protons at
very low transverse momenta are also shown.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, Contribution to Quark Matter 2002, Nantes,

Universal Behavior of Charged Particle Production in Heavy Ion Collisions
The PHOBOS experiment at RHIC has measured the multiplicity of primary
charged particles as a function of centrality and pseudorapidity in Au+Au
collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 19.6, 130 and 200 GeV. Two kinds of universal
behavior are observed in charged particle production in heavy ion collisions.
The first is that forward particle production, over a range of energies,
follows a universal limiting curve with a non-trivial centrality dependence.
The second arises from comparisons with pp/pbar-p and e+e- data.
N_tot/(N_part/2) in nuclear collisions at high energy scales with sqrt(s) in a
similar way as N_tot in e+e- collisions and has a very weak centrality
dependence. This feature may be related to a reduction in the leading particle
effect due to the multiple collisions suffered per participant in heavy ion
collisions.Comment: 4 Pages, 5 Figures, contributed to the Proceedings of Quark Matter

Global Observations from PHOBOS
Particle production in Au+Au collisions has been measured in the PHOBOS
experiment at RHIC for a range of collision energies. Three empirical
observations have emerged from this dataset which require theoretical
examination. First, there is clear evidence of limiting fragmentation. Namely,
particle production in central Au+Au collisions, when expressed as
(), becomes energy independent at high energy for a
broad region of around . This energy-independent region grows
with energy, allowing only a limited region (if any) of longitudinal
boost-invariance. Second, there is a striking similarity between particle
production in e+e- and Au+Au collisions (scaled by the number of participating
nucleon pairs). Both the total number of produced particles and the
longitudinal distribution of produced particles are approximately the same in
e+e- and in scaled Au+Au. This observation was not predicted and has not been
explained. Finally, particle production has been found to scale approximately
with the number of participating nucleon pairs for . This scaling
occurs both for the total multiplicity and for high \pT particles (3 <\pT<
4.5 GeV/c).Comment: QM2002 plenary talk, 10 pages, 11 figure
Recent Results from PHOBOS at RHIC
The PHOBOS experiment at RHIC has recorded measurements for Au-Au collisions
spanning nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energies from 19.6 GeV to 200 GeV.
Global observables such as elliptic flow and charged particle multiplicity
provide important constraints on model predictions that characterize the state
of matter produced in these collisions. The nearly 4 pi acceptance of the
PHOBOS experiment provides excellent coverage for complete flow and
multiplicity measurements. Results including beam energy and centrality
dependencies are presented and compared to elementary systems.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, proceedings from PANIC02 in Osaka, Japa
Variable G and : scalar-tensor versus RG-improved cosmology
We study the consequences due to time varying and in
scalar-tensor theories of gravity for cosmology, inspired by the modifications
introduced by the Renormalization Group (RG) equations in the Quantum Einstein
Gravity. We assume a power-law scale factor in presence contemporarily of both
the scalar field and the matter components of the cosmic fluid, and analyze a
special case and its generalization, also showing the possibility of a phantom
cosmology. In both such situations we find a negative kinetic term for the
scalar field and, possibly, an equation-of-state parameter . A
violation of dominant energy condition (DEC) for is also possible in both
of them; but, while in the first special case the -energy density then
remains positive, in the second one we find it negative.Comment: 25 pages, to be published in Gen. Rel. Grav. 200
