Non-perturbative QEG Corrections to the Yang-Mills Beta Function
We discuss the non-perturbative renormalization group evolution of the gauge
coupling constant by using a truncated form of the functional flow equation for
the effective average action of the Yang-Mills-gravity system. Our result is
consistent with the conjecture that Quantum Einstein Gravity (QEG) is
asymptotically safe and has a vanishing gauge coupling constant at the

Psychopathology and coping in recently diagnosed HIV/AIDS patients- the role of gender
Background. Although there is growing literature on the psychological responses to and the psychopathology associated with HIV/AIDS, few investigations have focused on the role of gender. This study compared psychiatric morbidity, coping responses, and disability in male and female outpatients recently diagnosed with HIV/AIDS.Method. One hundred and forty-nine patients (44 male, 105 female) with HIV/AIDS (mean ± standard deviation (SD) months since diagnosis 5.8 ± 4.1) attending an infectious diseases clinic at Tygerberg Hospital, Cape Town, were evaluated. Subjects were assessed using the MINI International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), the Carver Brief COPE, and the Sheehan Disability Scale. In addition, negative life events and risk behaviours were evaluated.Results. Fifty-six per cent of patients were diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder, most commonly major depression (34.9%), dysthymic disorder (21.5%), post-traumatic stress disorder (14.8%), and alcohol dependence (10.1 %). There were no significant gender differences in the prevalence of mood disorders in the sample. Men, however, were more likely than women to meet diagnostic criteria for alcohol abuse or dependence, and to engage in certain risky sexual behaviours. Women were more likely to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, and to use coping strategies of planning and religion to deal with the illness. There were no significant gender differences in disability.Conclusion. Psychiatric disorders are common in recently diagnosed HIV/AIDS patients in South Africa. Clinicians should be aware of the high prevalence of mood disorders in both men and women, and of gender-different responses such as increased alcohol and substance use and more risky sexual behaviour in men
Two loop results from one loop computations and non perturbative solutions of exact evolution equations
A nonperturbative method is proposed for the approximative solution of the
exact evolution equation which describes the scale dependence of the effective
average action. It consists of a combination of exact evolution equations for
independent couplings with renormalization group improved one loop expressions
of secondary couplings. Our method is illustrated by an example: We compute the
beta-function of the quartic coupling lambda of an O(N) symmetric scalar field
theory to order lambda^3 as well as the anomalous dimension to order lambda^2
using only one loop expressions and find agreement with the two loop
perturbation theory. We also treat the case of very strong coupling and confirm

The role of occupied d states in the relaxation of hot electrons in Au
We present first-principles calculations of electron-electron scattering
rates of low-energy electrons in Au. Our full band-structure calculations
indicate that a major contribution from occupied d states participating in the
screening of electron-electron interactions yields lifetimes of electrons in Au
with energies of above the Fermi level that are larger than
those of electrons in a free-electron gas by a factor of . This
prediction is in agreement with a recent experimental study of ultrafast
electron dynamics in Au(111) films (J. Cao {\it et al}, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 58},
10948 (1998)), where electron transport has been shown to play a minor role in

THE HIGGS-YUKAWA MODEL IN CURVED SPACETIME
The Higgs-Yukawa model in curved spacetime (renormalizable in the usual
sense) is considered near the critical point, employing the --expansion
and renormalization group techniques. By making use of the equivalence of this
model with the standard NJL model, the effective potential in the linear
curvature approach is calculated and the dynamically generated fermionic mass
is found. A numerical study of chiral symmetry breaking by curvature effects is

Complex of twistor operators in symplectic spin geometry
For a symplectic manifold admitting a metaplectic structure (a symplectic
analogue of the Riemannian spin structure), we construct a sequence consisting
of differential operators using a symplectic torsion-free affine connection.
All but one of these operators are of first order. The first order ones are
symplectic analogues of the twistor operators known from Riemannian spin
geometry. We prove that under the condition the symplectic Weyl curvature
tensor field of the symplectic connection vanishes, the mentioned sequence
forms a complex. This gives rise to a new complex for the so called Ricci type
symplectic manifolds, which admit a metaplectic structure.Comment: 18 pages, 1 figur
New Approach to GUTs
We introduce a new string-inspired approach to the subject of grand
unification which allows the GUT scale to be small, \lesssim 200 TeV, so that
it is within the reach of {\em conceivable} laboratory accelerated colliding
beam devices. The key ingredient is a novel use of the heterotic string
symmetry group physics ideas to render baryon number violating effects small
enough to have escaped detection to date. This part of the approach involves
new unknown parameters to be tested experimentally. A possible hint at the
existence of these new parameters may already exist in the EW precision data

On the Nature of the Phase Transition in SU(N), Sp(2) and E(7) Yang-Mills theory
We study the nature of the confinement phase transition in d=3+1 dimensions
in various non-abelian gauge theories with the approach put forward in [1]. We
compute an order-parameter potential associated with the Polyakov loop from the
knowledge of full 2-point correlation functions. For SU(N) with N=3,...,12 and
Sp(2) we find a first-order phase transition in agreement with general
expectations. Moreover our study suggests that the phase transition in E(7)
Yang-Mills theory also is of first order. We find that it is weaker than for
SU(N). We show that this can be understood in terms of the eigenvalue
distribution of the order parameter potential close to the phase transition.Comment: 15 page
Asymptotically Safe Gravitons in Electroweak Precision Physics
Asymptotic safety offers a field theory based UV completion to gravity. For
low Planck scales, gravitational effects on low-energy precision observables
cannot be neglected. We compute the contribution to the rho parameter from
asymptotically safe gravitons and find that in contrast to effective theory,
constraints on models with more than three extra dimensions are significantly
weakened. The relative size of the trans-Planckian contribution increases
