Developing a Framework for the Study of Performing Arts Programs for Other-than-artistic Purposes in Conflict Settings

    Get PDF
This paper discusses the process of developing a new framework combining ideas from Community Music (Howell, 2018), Social Psychology (Pettigrew, 1998; Odena, 2018) and Peace Studies (Cabedo-Mas, 2015), aimed at providing a tool for researchers wishing to systematically examine Performing Arts programs for other-than-artistic purposes in conflict settings. The framework could also be a tool for organizers and practitioners wishing to reflect on their work and to position it within the wider conflict recovery context. The process of framework development is ongoing, and is part of the activities of a new network including members from Colombia, Mexico, Brazil, Spain and the UK, supported by the AHRC and the Royal Society of Edinburgh (2019-2021) and informed by an international Advisory group. The second part of the paper shares the network’s planned activities and selected aspects of a recent doctorate by one of its members (Rodríguez-Sánchez, 2019). Once the framework is developed, we will consider its illuminating potential within the intercultural, political and socioeconomic complexity of conflict settings

Evaluation of Fault Mitigation Techniques Based on Approximate Computing Under Radiation

A software technique based on approximate computing and redundancy is presented to mitigate radiation-induced soft errors in COTS microprocessors. Approximate Computing relies on the capability of certain applications to accept imprecise results to improve efficiency by sacrificing its results in a controlled manner. Our approach avoids the time overhead derived from hardening while preserving the detection and correction rate. Experimental results show that we can detect and correct SDC events improving the cross-section up to 160×, and keeping accuracy under control without compromising performance. In addition, an accuracy-aware layer is included to improve error mitigation and to provide a trade-off between the number of tolerable errors and the necessary accuracy.MultiRad (funded by Région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France); IRT Nanoelec (French National Research Agency ANR-10-AIRT-05 project funded through the Program d’investissement d’avenir); UGA/LPSC/-GENESIS platform and PID2022-138696OB-C22 (funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation)

Procedencia de la Formación El Cerrito en el Cinturón Plegado de San Jacinto: implicaciones paleogeográficas para el Caribe colombiano

A provenance study of an Upper-Miocene sedimentary sequence drilled by the ANH-Los Pájaros-1X well was carried out to unravel the sediment sources and sedimentary environments of the San Jacinto Folded Belt. Our findings indicate that the sequence studied was deposited in deltaic systems that oscillated between prodelta-front and delta plain environments. The average ratio of sandstones samples is Q36F24L40; where the lithics identified correspond to andesites, quartzites, shales, granites, mudstones and sandstones, which indicates multiple sources of detrital materials delivered into the basin by a complex fluvial network. Analyses of heavy minerals show a high proportion of hornblende and pyroxene, perhaps implying an igneous source. The minor content of apatite, biotite, muscovite, tourmaline, and zircon suggests a provenance related to felsic igneous rocks, although intermediate plutonic and volcanics or metamorphic rocks cannot be discarded. The maximum deposition age given by the U/Pb dates indicates that the sedimentary sequence is not older than the late Miocene (9.7-9.1 Ma), which allows a stratigraphic correlation with the El Cerrito Formation. According to available paleogeographic reconstructions for this period, large rivers, and deltaic systems prograded towards NW of Colombia. The main sources of sediments were thus located to the south in the Central and Western cordillera, as well as in paleo-highs of the Lower Magdalena Valley associated with tectonic environments of magmatic arcs and recycled orogens. Contribution of sediments with geochronologic signatures typical of rocks with Panama-Choco Block affinity seem to be evidenced by detrital U/Pb ages between 43.4-40.7 Ma. On the other hand, the frequent presence of late Miocene zircons, together with the high proportion of volcanic lithics suggest the influence of magmatic activity from the Western Cordillera and the Cauca river trough.

INTRODUCTION: During the COVID-19 pandemic, women disproportionately assume more unpaid activities, affecting their employment. OBJECTIVE: Describe the influence of COVID-19 on the employment of caregivers of children and adolescents from a gender perspective. METHODS: Cross-sectional study in three high-complexity hospitals in Bogotá, Colombia from April 2020 to June 2021. A subsample of the FARA cohort was taken, including those patients with a positive test for SARS-COV2. We took as our analysis category children older than 8 years and younger than 18 years who had a positive SARS-COV2 test, as well as, caregivers of all children with a positive SARS-COV2 test. This subsample was drawn from the FARA cohort. A survey was applied to them. We carried out a descriptive and stratified analysis by age group, educational, and socioeconomic level. RESULTS: We included 60 surveys of caregivers and 10 surveys of children. The main caregiver in 94.8% of the cases was a female. At the beginning of the pandemic, 63.3% of the caregivers were employed, and 78.9% of those lost their employment. The vast majority of these caregiver were women (96.6%, CONCLUSION: Caregivers of children with COVID-19 with low educational levels and lower socioeconomic conditions, as well as those with children under 5 years showed greater likelihood of employment loss between the interviewed subsample

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The approach to the burden of disease is a demographic, economic, and a health problem, which requires the design and application of specific measures of cost of the disease, such as disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), to establish better public health policies in the pediatric population. The aim of this study is to approach the burden of disease in children with acute respiratory failure (ARF) through the calculation of DALYs. METHODS: This study was conducted in the framework of a prospective, multicenter cohort in Bogotá, Colombia. Inclusion criteria were all pediatric patients admitted to the emergency department, hospitalization, and intensive care unit with respiratory distress; eligible patients were all those who developed ARF between April 2020 and December 2021. They were followed-up during hospitalization, at 30 and 60 days after admission. The Infant/Toddler Quality of Life Questionnaire and KIDSCREEN quality of life scales were applied for follow-up according to the age group. The results were used to calculate DALYs. RESULTS: Six hundred and eighty-five eligible patients, 296 (43.08%) developed ARF, of these 22 (6.08%) patients died (mortality rate = 7.43%). The total DALYs was 277.164 years. For younger than 9 years, the DALYs were 302.64 years, while for older than 10 years were 40.49 years. CONCLUSION: ARF is one of the main causes of preventable mortality in pediatrics, its progression to respiratory failure is a highly prevalent condition in pediatric age, a condition that has a great impact on mortality, morbidity, and disability in our patients

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Acute respiratory failure (ARF) is a common cause of morbimortality, and a frequent reason for admission to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). It requires a high-flow oxygen device as treatment. Our aim is to determine the frequency and main indications for the use of high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC), and the prevalence of HFNC failure and its main causes, in three hospitals. METHODS: It is a multicenter prospective cohort study, developed in three hospitals in Bogota. Eligible patients were children older than 1 month and younger than 18 years who presented ARF and required management with an HFNC. The study was carried out between April 2020 and December 2021. The follow-up was carried out at 1, 6, and 48 h after starting the management. RESULTS: Of 685 patients included in the study, 296 developed ARF. The prevalence of patients with ARF who required management with HFNC was 48%. The frequency of the pathologies that cause the ARF was: Bronchiolitis was the most frequent pathology (34.5%), followed by asthmatic crisis (15.5%) and pneumonia (12.7%). The average time of use of HFNC was 81.6 h. Regarding treatment failure with HFNC, 15 patients presented torpid evolution and required invasive mechanical ventilation, with a prevalence of therapeutic failure of the HFNC of 10.6%. CONCLUSION: The use of HFNC is more frequent in patients with bronchiolitis, in children under 2 years of age and in males, which is in line with what has been reported in the literature. In addition, the failure rate of HFNC is low (10.6%), and it may be useful in other pathologies besides bronchiolitis, such as asthma, pneumonia, among others. It opens the possibility to continue evaluating the role of HFNC in pediatric pathology in new studies

Formation of the Isthmus of Panama

    Get PDF
The formation of the Isthmus of Panama stands as one of the greatest natural events of the Cenozoic, driving profound biotic transformations on land and in the oceans. Some recent studies suggest that the Isthmus formed manymillions of years earlier than the widely recognized age of approximately 3 million years ago (Ma), a result that if true would revolutionize our understanding of environmental, ecological, and evolutionary change across the Americas. To bring clarity to the question of when the Isthmus of Panama formed, we provide an exhaustive review and reanalysis of geological, paleontological, and molecular records. These independent lines of evidence converge upon a cohesive narrative of gradually emerging land and constricting seaways, withformationof theIsthmus of Panama sensustricto around 2.8 Ma. The evidence used to support an older isthmus is inconclusive, and we caution against the uncritical acceptance of an isthmus before the Pliocene.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse
