    AbstractTotal hip arthroplasty has evolved along with improvements in component materials and design. The radiologist must accurately diagnose associated complications with imaging methods and stay informed about newer complications associated with innovations in surgical technique, prosthetic design, and novel materials. This pictorial essay presents clinical and imaging correlation of modern hip arthroplasty complications, with an emphasis on the most common complications of instability, aseptic loosening, and infection as well as those complications associated with contemporary metal-on-metal arthroplasty

    The ensemble of random Markov matrices

    The ensemble of random Markov matrices is introduced as a set of Markov or stochastic matrices with the maximal Shannon entropy. The statistical properties of the stationary distribution pi, the average entropy growth rate hh and the second largest eigenvalue nu across the ensemble are studied. It is shown and heuristically proven that the entropy growth-rate and second largest eigenvalue of Markov matrices scale in average with dimension of matrices d as h ~ log(O(d)) and nu ~ d^(-1/2), respectively, yielding the asymptotic relation h tau_c ~ 1/2 between entropy h and correlation decay time tau_c = -1/log|nu| .     Metal silicide/poly-Si Schottky diodes for uncooled microbolometers

    Nickel silicide Schottky diodes formed on polycrystalline Si films are proposed as temperature sensors of monolithic uncooled microbolometer IR focal plane arrays. Structure and composition of nickel silicide/polycrystalline silicon films synthesized in a low-temperature process are examined by means of transmission electron microscopy. The Ni silicide is identified as multi-phase compound composed by 20 to 40% of Ni3Si, 30 to 60% of Ni2Si and 10 to 30% of NiSi with probable minor content of NiSi2 at the silicide/poly-Si interface. Rectification ratios of the Schottky diodes vary from ~100 to ~20 for the temperature increasing from 22 to 70C; they exceed 1000 at 80K. A barrier of ~0.95 eV is found to control the photovoltage spectra at room temperature. A set of barriers is observed in photo-emf spectra at 80K and attributed to the Ni-silicide/poly-Si interface. Absolute values of temperature coefficients of voltage and current are found to vary from 0.3 to 0.6%/K for forward biasing and around 2.5%/K for reverse biasing of the diodes.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure

    Occurrence of fungicide residues on Argentinean blueberry fruit and juice samples

    Azoxystrobin, boscalid, cyprodinil, fludioxonil and pyraclostrobin are fungicides commonly used in Argentina against different fungus contaminations in the blueberry field. The presence of these fungicides was investigated in 50 samples of blueberry fruit and 15 samples of blueberry juice purchased in Argentina. Fungicide residues were determined by solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coupled to gas chromatography with micro-electron capture and nitrogen phosphorous detector. The average concentrations of azoxystrobin were 48 µg/kg in blueberry fruit. Average of boscalid were 43 and 239 µg/kg, of cyprodinil 1581 and 852 µg/kg, of fludioxonil 1077 and 2842 g/kg, and of pyraclostrobin 578 and 3414 µg/kg, in fruits and juice respectively. The higher concentrations of fungicides were found in those cases where the time between the application of the compound and the fruit’s commercialization was shorter than the fungicide’s half-life

    We consider the problem of the bound states of a spin 1/2 chargless particle in a given Aharonov-Casher configuration. To this end we recast the description of the system in a supersymmetric form. Then the basic physical requirements for unbroken supersymmetry are established. We comment on the possibility of neutron confinement in this system

    Can metaphysical structuralism solve the plurality problem?

    Metaphysics has a problem with plurality: in many areas of discourse, there are too many good theories, rather than just one. This embarrassment of riches is a particular problem for metaphysical realists who want metaphysics to tell us the way the world is and for whom one theory is the correct one. A recent suggestion is that we can treat the different theories as being functionally or explanatorily equivalent to each other, even though they differ in content. The aim of this paper is to explore whether the notion of functionally equivalent theories can be extended and utilized in the defence of metaphysical realism, drawing upon themes from structuralism in the philosophies of mathematics and science in which the specifics of theories do not matter as long as the relations in which they stand to other theories are maintained. I argue that despite its initial attractiveness, there are significant difficulties with this proposal. Discovering these obstacles (most probably) thwarts the realist structuralist project, but reveals interesting features of metaphysical systems

    Bilateral symmetrical cortical osteolytic lesions in two patients with Gaucher disease

    Gaucher disease (GD) is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder characterized by the reduced or absent activity of glucocerebrosidase. The disease is split into three types. Type 3, or chronic neuronopathic GD, manifests with heterogeneous clinical presentations. Skeletal manifestations of GD can include abnormal bone remodeling resulting in the characteristic Erlenmeyer flask deformities, painful bone crises, osteopenia, and an increased frequency of fractures. Osteolytic lesions can also occur but are rare and tend to be large, expanding intramedullary lesions with cortical thinning. We present two adolescent patients with type 3 GD who developed bilateral symmetrical cortical osteolytic lesions. The lesions in both cases demonstrate predominant cortical scalloping with fairly indolent growth. Neither patient manifests some of the more common bony manifestations of GD—bone crises or osteonecrosis. These atypical and unique skeletal findings in two unrelated probands with type 3 GD further expand the extent of phenotypic variation encountered in this single gene disorder
