The Spanish Gough maps: first pre-postal maps of the Iberian Peninsula in its European context

In this paper, we study two singular maps, the Modern Map of Spain, attributed to Cardinal Margarit, and Spagna con le distantie de li loci; made in northern Italy in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Like the British Gough map, both already show communication networks with expressed distances. Using formal analysis, statistical methodology, and computer proces sing, we present the cartographic characteristics of each one and relate them to their his torical context, updating the scarce information available until now. We explain their relationship as two milestones of the same cartographic process. At the same time, we study the routes represented, finding out the units of measurement used and the communication networks that both maps show us in the context of the Revolution of Communications that the Renaissance represented in Europe. The research has allowed us to attribute a new dating to them, question the traditional authorship, and advance a theory on the transport networks? functionality, demonstrating that both maps are part of a cartographic and historical process at the European level. All these updates to the vision on the first maps of communications in Western Europe established new contributions to the relationship between maps and itin eraries. It contributes to filling a void occupied in solitary, until now, by the map of Gough of Great Britain

"Against spanish conscience": the translation of North-american classics in post-war Spain (1950s & 1960s)

The period before the Spanish Civil War witnessed some translations into Catalan of North-American authors such as Walt Whitman, Mark Twain, Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne. It is over the 1930s, however, that other big names of North-American literature –such as William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway- reach high levels of popularity on Spanish soil. What happens much later with the reception of these authors? Our article will explore the translations of these and other North-American authors which appeared over the end of the Spanish Civil War to the end of the 1950s, a period of cnsolidation of the United States as a global economic power. Our proposal is to research the selection of titles edited and translated over these two decades (40s and 50s) with a view of demonstrating that they conform an intricate wave of thought on the part of vocational editors who took care of every single detail in the editing process, and who had to confront serious logistic and ideological problems to boot. XOR-based HoL-blocking Reduction Routing Mechanisms for Direct Networks

[EN] Routing is a key design parameter in the interconnection network of large parallel computers. Routing algorithms are classified into two different categories depending on the number of routing options available for each source-destination pair: deterministic (there is one path available) and adaptive (there are several ones). Adaptive routing has two opposed effects on network performance. On one hand, it provides routing flexibility that may help on avoiding a congested network area, thus improving network performance. On the other hand, it also may increase the Head-of-Line blocking effect due to more destination nodes sharing the port queues. Usually, adaptive routing uses virtual channels to provide routing flexibility and to guarantee deadlock freedom. Deterministic routing is simpler, which implies lower routing delay and it introduces less Head-of-Line blocking effect. In this paper, we propose an adaptive and HoL-blocking reduction routing algorithm for direct topologies that tries to combine the good properties of both worlds: It provides routing flexibility but also reduces the Head-of-Line blocking effect. To do that, this paper proposes several functions which use the XOR operation to efficiently distribute the packets among virtual channels based on their destination node. Organocatalyzed Enantioselective Aldol and Henry Reactions Starting from Benzylic Alcohols

Pioneering aldol and Henry reactions starting from benzylic-type alcohols are described. The aldol reaction has been successfully performed following a one-pot strategy starting from alcohols, while the Henry reaction has been carried out following a sequential protocol for the first time. In both processes, enantiomerically enriched products were obtained with good yields and high enantioselectivities. We have also demonstrated that in reactions sensitive to small amounts of acid the use of alcohols instead of aldehydes could be a good solution for improving the results of these reactions. El papel de la universidad pública en la formación socialmente responsable. Análisis de la enseñanza de competencias emprendedoras sociales en la Universidad de Valencia

La presente tesis centra su atención sobre la formación ofrecida desde el entorno universitario en competencias emprendedoras, desde el enfoque social. De esta manera, se va articulando un discurso con ánimo de tender puentes entre dos de las misiones de la universidad: docencia y compromiso social. Y es que la educación es considerada un pilar básico sobre el que construir un modelo de sociedad que atienda a la igualdad de oportunidades, la cohesión y el desarrollo social, cultural y comunitario (Comisión Europea, 2003). La presente tesis tiene como objetivo general conocer el tratamiento de las competencias emprendedoras sociales en los procesos de enseñanza de la educación universitaria y describir qué se está haciendo en el currículum de los grados de la Universitat de València en cuanto a su fomento y/o enseñanza. Para llevar a término este estudio, en primer lugar, se realizó una revisión sistemática de la literatura sobre las experiencias formativas sobre emprendimiento social en educación superior; en segundo lugar, se operativizó la construcción teórica del término emprendimiento social a partir del Método Delphi; en tercer lugar, se desarrolló un análisis de contenido a partir de los planes de estudio de grados universitarios en la Universitat de València, a través de la memoria de verificación, para identificar en el currículum prescrito elementos propios del emprendimiento social; finalmente, se utilizó el método encuesta para analizar la percepción del alumnado universitario sobre el emprendimiento social en el currículum realizado en las enseñanzas oficiales de grado universitario en la Universitat de València. Los resultados principales del estudio mostraron: i) la reciente línea de investigación que rodea al emprendimiento social y la alta diversificación en las tipologías recogidas de estudio (desarrollo de marco teórico, metodologías docentes, etc.); ii) que pese a la amplitud de indicadores que convergen en la definición de emprendimiento y emprendimiento social, sólo cinco indicadores definen de forma exclusiva al emprendimiento social: ser altruista, solidaria, comprometida, responsable socialmente, comprensiva y participativa, por lo que se observa la dificultad en la operativización del término, asociándose estos indicadores a la dimensión social de la formación del alumnado; iii) en los planes de estudio universitarios, aquellos indicadores que mejor definen al emprendimiento social son los menos mencionados, ya que priman aquellos indicadores asociados a la formación técnica, además, existe disparidad en la distribución de indicadores por áreas de conocimiento; por último, iv) la percepción del alumnado sobre la formación de indicadores que mejor definen al emprendimiento social se puede sintetizar en: la cantidad de formación percibida al respecto es escasa; sin embargo, consideran que esta formación es importante para su futuro; además, muestran una escasa intencionalidad emprendedora

Diseño e implementación de una aplicación para la gestión del cortafuegos de Android

Hoy en día vivimos en una sociedad que hace uso con mucha frecuencia de las nuevas tecnologías, las cuales evolucionan aceleradamente con al paso del tiempo. Un perfecto ejemplo de esto es el auge del uso de dispositivos inteligentes como los smartphones o tablets. Desde el móvil podemos consultar nuestra cuenta bancaria, comunicarnos con amigos o familiares, interactuar con las redes sociales, hacer fotos o incluso realizar compras a través de portales web o aplicaciones. El teléfono móvil cuenta con un amplio abanico de características que nos hacen la vida más fácil y nos proporcionan más comodidad en nuestra vida diaria Sin embargo, la amplia funcionalidad ofrecida por los teléfonos inteligentes requiere del almacenamiento de cierta información privada como datos de localización, datos bancarios, fotografías, etc. Si esta información cae en las manos equivocadas podría incurrir en un daño muy elevado al usuario. Se hace por lo tanto necesario el poder dotar de herramientas que permitan asegurar la confidencialidad, integridad y disponibilidad de los datos, de igual manera que se ha estado trabajando en ordenadores convencionales. De esa idea, surge este proyecto, cuya principal intención es la de otorgar al dispositivo una capa de seguridad adicional que dificulte el acceso a los datos por parte de un posible acceso ilegítimo al teléfono y a los datos que este almacena, mediante la configuración de un cortafuegos de aplicaciones.Nowadays, we live in a society which is highly dependable on new technologies, which involve rapidly through time. A perfect example of such evolution is the increased use of smart devices such as smartphones or tablets. Using a Smartphone, we can check our bank account, communicate with friends or our family, interact with social networks, take pictures or even perform buy through web portals or applications. The mobile phone has a wide range of features that make us the life easier and give us more comfort in our daily lives. However, the useful functionality provided by these smart devices requires the storage o personal and private information, such as location data, banking or images and pictures.. If such information is compromised, users can be at a high danger. It is this required to provide the new technologies with security tools aiming at provide confidentiality, privacy and integrity to the data, same as those intended for personal computers. This is the main motivation of this project, whose main objective is providing at the device a new additional layer of security (i.e. a firewall) that prevents the access at the data storage inside the mobile of a possible illegal access to telephone and data stores.Ingeniería Informátic

Speeding-up the fault-tolerance analysis of interconnection networks

The size of the exploration space of such operation skyrockets with the network size and with the number of link faults. However, this problem is highly parallelizable since the exploration of each path between a source–destination pair is independent of the other paths. This paper presents an approach to analyze the fault-tolerance degree of multistage interconnection networks using GPUs in order to speed-up it. This approach uses CUDA as parallel programming tool on a GPU in order to take advantage of all available cores.
