In this thesis we study the local dynamics of a hyperchaotic Lorenz-type system depending on seven parameters. Using the Averaging theory we characterize the bifurcations of periodic solutions at zero-Hopf equilibrium points and describe the sufficient conditions, which ensure that two periodic solutions are born from the bifurcation point

Architectural analysis: an inmersion in the first design course

The Architectonic Analysis course was the starting point from where it was implanted, in its beginnings (course 1997-1998), the pedagogical line of the studies of the School of Architecture at La Salle-Ramon-Llull University, in Barcelona, and remains the first encounter of the Student with architecture, through the discipline of the design studio. The architects Josep Llinàs and José Antonio Martínez Lapeña, first responsibles for the subject, laid the foundations and raised the training from their personal experience as teachers and professionals. The student performs a practical immersion in architecture: a total experience in which he-she is exposed from the first day to the experience of architecture and its construction, through the analysis of existing buildings and interventions, its representation and modification.Peer Reviewe

    Alejandro Zohn: structure & form

    No full text
Alejandro Zohn (1930-2000) studied both at the same time civil engineering and architecture in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. From his student times he became interested in the plastic and formal qualities of ruled structures and concrete. This is evidenced by his final works and his engineering thesis "Nuevo Mercado Libertad” in the San Juan de Dios neighbourhood, in 1955. A couple of years later, the thesis became one of the main buildings in the city. This design project will determine his personal path in architecture: using the hyperbolic paraboloid, a ruled surface that solves not only the roof but the entire building, obtaining spaces of great interior and exterior expressive richness, which are halfway between architecture and sculpture. Added to this is the use of a reduced range of traditional materials in conjunction with industrial materials. This article explores the origin of this way of designing and unfolds the compositional mechanisms that the architect-engineer uses in his design projects. Starting from a basic unit that, singularly or systematically repeated, solves a wide range of architectural typologies, Zohn creates a set of masterful works that have spatial qualities in accordance with the specificity of the place, with the properties of the materials and with the programe requirements.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Capturing the drivers of social SDGs: An econometric analysis of the dimensions of health and education.

With the changing policy landscape, the monitoring of human development in terms of the three pillars of sustainability (i.e., economic, social, environmental) has gained considerable traction in recent years. As a tool for conducting economic impact assessments, CGE simulation modelling is a workhorse member of the standard toolbox of modelling applications available to policy-makers, think tanks and academics alike. Notwithstanding, whilst simulation modelling is adept (in differing degrees) at handling issues relating to two of the three dimensions of sustainability, the social dimension remains neglected. Indeed, with their reliance on strictly market driven concepts, the task of including social indicators in economic models relating to, for example, health or education, necessitates a linkage with historical observation and statistical rigour. This paper sets out to provide an initial step toward filling this gap. More specifically, employing panel datasets and econometric model specifications based on searches of the relevant literature, this paper provides parametric linkages between identifiable indices in economic simulation models and a selection of six indicators covering health and education. One of the conclusions drawn from this paper is the significant effect of per capita GDP on health and education indicators. Nevertheless, the impact of other drivers, such as the food intake or the share of the agricultural sector on GDP, have a similar or even a greater magnitude than the income level. We also found a close relationship between health and education, since all health indicators tend to improve as the years of schooling increase. In contrast, the impact of pollution, trade openness and inequality on the selected indicators is much more reduced and, in most cases, not statistically significant

Programmed cell death promotes male sterility in the functional dioecious Opuntia stenopetala (Cactaceae)

Background and AimsThe sexual separation in dioecious species has interested biologists for decades; however, the cellular mechanism leading to unisexuality has been poorly understood. In this study, the cellular changes that lead to male sterility in the functionally dioecious cactus, Opuntia stenopetala, are described.MethodsThe spatial and temporal patterns of programmed cell death (PCD) were determined in the anthers of male and female flowers using scanning electron microscopy analysis and histological observations, focusing attention on the transition from bisexual to unisexual development. In addition, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick-end labelling assays were used as an indicator of DNA fragmentation to corroborate PCD.Key resultsPCD was detected in anthers of both female and male flowers, but their patterns differed in time and space. Functionally male individuals developed viable pollen, and normal development involved PCD on each layer of the anther wall, which occurred progressively from the inner (tapetum) to the outer layer (epidermis). Conversely, functional female individuals aborted anthers by premature and displaced PCD. In anthers of female flowers, the first signs of PCD, such as a nucleus with irregular shape, fragmented and condensed chromatin, high vacuolization and condensed cytoplasm, occurred at the microspore mother cell stage. Later these features were observed simultaneously in all anther wall layers, connective tissue and filament. Neither pollen formation nor anther dehiscence was detected in female flowers of O. stenopetala due to total anther disruption.ConclusionsTemporal and spatial changes in the patterns of PCD are responsible for male sterility of female flowers in O. stenopetala. Male fertility requires the co-ordination of different events, which, when altered, can lead to male sterility and to functionally unisexual individuals. PCD could be a widespread mechanism in the determination of functionally dioecious species
