On the Coexistence of Diagonal and off-Diagonal Long-Range Order, a Monte Carlo Study
The zero temperature properties of interacting 2 dimensional lattice bosons
are investigated. We present Monte Carlo data for soft-core bosons that
demonstrate the existence of a phase in which crystalline long-range order and
off-diagonal long-range order (superfluidity) coexist. We comment on the
difference between hard and soft-core bosons and compare our data to mean-field
results that predict a larger coexistence region. Furthermore, we determine the

Preoperative apolipoprotein CI levels correlate positively with the proinflammatory response in patients experiencing endotoxemia following elective cardiac surgery
Objective: Experimental models show that apolipoprotein CI (apoCI) binds and enhances the inflammatory response to endotoxin. We studied in patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass surgery (CPB) and experiencing endotoxemia during reperfusion whether plasma apoCI levels correlate with the inflammatory response and perioperative cytokine release. Design: Prospective, observational, clinical cohort study. Setting: Operating room (OR) and intensive care unit (ICU) of a university hospital. Patients: One hundred fifty-nine consecutive patients > 18 years of age (66% males (n = 105), median age 65 and 67 years for males and females, respectively) undergoing elective cardiothoracic surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass. Interventions: None. Measurements: Baseline apoCI, apoCIII, total cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and perioperative endotoxin and TNF-α levels were determined. Results: High preoperative plasma apoCI, but not apoCIII, levels were associated (p < 0.05) with increased perioperative levels of TNF-α in patients experiencing endotoxemia. This association was not observed in patients without endotoxemia. Conclusion: High plasma apoCI is positively related to proinflammatory response in patients experiencing endotoxemia and confirms the observations in animal models. © 2008 The Author(s)
S(k) for Haldane Gap Antiferromagnets: Large-scale Numerical Results vs. Field Theory and Experiment
The structure function, S(k), for the s=1, Haldane gap antiferromagnetic
chain, is measured accurately using the recent density matrix renormalization
group method, with chain-length 100. Excellent agreement with the nonlinear
model prediction is obtained, both at where a single
magnon process dominates and at where a two magnon process
dominates. We repeat our calculation with crystal field anisotropy chosen to
model NENP, obtaining good agreement with both field theory predictions and
recent experiments. Correlation lengths, gaps and velocities are determined for

Bronchoalveolar lavage in infants with recurrent lower respiratory symptoms
Background: Few data are available about the inflammatory cytokine profile of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) from young children with frequent wheeze. The first aim was to investigate the BAL cellular and cytokine profiles in infants with recurrent lower respiratory symptoms in whom bronchoscopy was indicated for clinical symptom evaluation. The second aim was to relate the BAL results with the histological findings of the endobronchial carina biopsies. Methods: Thirty-nine infants (median age 0.9 years) underwent lung function testing by whole-body plethysmography prior to the bronchoscopy. The BAL differential cell counts and cytokine levels were quantified. These findings were compared with the histological findings of the endobronchial carina biopsies. Results: The differential cytology reflected mainly that described for healthy infants with lymphocyte counts at the upper range level. A positive association between BAL CD8+ lymphocytes and neutrophils and endobronchial reticular basement membrane was found. Detectable levels of pro-inflammatory cytokine proteins IL-1 beta, IL-17A, IL-18, IL-23, and IL-33 were found, whereas levels of Th2-type cytokine proteins were low. Frequent wheeze was the only clinical characteristic significantly related to detectable combined pro-inflammatory cytokine profile. Lung function did not correlate with any cytokine. Conclusions: A positive association between BAL CD8+ lymphocytes and neutrophils and endobronchial reticular basement thickness was found. Detectable production of pro-inflammatory cytokines associated positively with frequent wheeze.Peer reviewe
Myosteatosis predicts survival after surgery for periampullary cancer::a novel method using MRI
Background: Myosteatosis, characterized by inter-and intramyocellular fat deposition, is strongly related to poor overall survival after surgery for periampullary cancer. It is commonly assessed by calculating the muscle radiation attenuation on computed tomography (CT) scans. However, since magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is replacing CT in routine diagnostic work-up, developing methods based on MRI is important. We developed a new method using MRI-muscle signal intensity to assess myosteatosis and compared it with CT-muscle radiation attenuation.Methods: Patients were selected from a prospective cohort of 236 surgical patients with periampullary cancer. The MRI-muscle signal intensity and CT-muscle radiation attenuation were assessed at the level of the third lumbar vertebra and related to survival.Results: Forty-seven patients were included in the study. Inter-observer variability for MRI assessment was low (R-2 = 0.94). MRI-muscle signal intensity was associated with short survival: median survival 9.8 (95%-CI: 1.5-18.1) vs. 18.2 (95%-CI: 10.7-25.8) months for high vs. low intensity, respectively (p = 0.038). Similar results were found for CT-muscle radiation attenuation (low vs. high radiation attenuation: 10.8 (95%-CI: 8.5-13.1) vs. 15.9 (95%-CI: 10.2-21.7) months, respectively; p = 0.046). MRI-signal intensity correlated negatively with CT-radiation attenuation (r=-0.614, p <0.001).Conclusions: Myosteatosis may be adequately assessed using either MRI-muscle signal intensity or CT-muscle radiation attenuation.</p

Equal Time Correlations in Haldane Gap Antiferromagnets
The antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain both with and without single ion
anisotropy is studied. Using the recently proposed density matrix
renormalization group technique we calculate the energy gaps as well as several
different correlation functions. The two gaps, ,
along with associated correlation lengths and velocities are determined. The
numerical results are shown to be in good agreement with theoretical
predictions derived from the nonlinear sigma model and a free boson model. We
also study the excitations that occur at the ends of open chains; in
particular we study the behavior associated with open boundary conditions,

Relationship between the Daily Rhythm of Distal Skin Temperature and Brown Adipose Tissue 18F-FDG Uptake in Young Sedentary Adults
The present study examines whether the daily rhythm of distal skin
temperature (DST) is associated with brown adipose tissue (BAT) metabolism
as determined by 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) uptake in young adults.
Using a wireless thermometer (iButton) worn on the nondominant wrist, DST
was measured in 77 subjects (26% male; age 22 ± 2 years; body mass index 25.2
± 4.8 kg/m2) for 7 consecutive days. The temperatures to which they were
habitually exposed over the day were also recorded. The interday stability of
DST was calculated from the collected data, along with the intraday variability
and relative amplitude; the mean temperature of the 5 and 10 consecutive
hours with the maximum and minimum DST values, respectively; and when
these hours occurred. Following exposure to cold, BAT volume and mean and
peak standardized 18F-FDG uptake (SUVmean and SUVpeak) were determined for
each subject via static 18F-FDG positron emission tomography/computed
tomography scanning. Relative amplitude and the time at which the 10 consecutive
hours of minimum DST values occurred were positively associated
with BAT volume, SUVmean, and SUVpeak (p ≤ 0.02), whereas the mean DST of
that period was inversely associated with the latter BAT variables (p ≤ 0.01).
The interday stability and intraday variability of the DST were also associated
(directly and inversely, respectively) with BAT SUVpeak (p ≤ 0.02 for both). All
of these associations disappeared, however, when the analyses were adjusted
for the ambient temperature to which the subjects were habitually exposed. Thus, the relationship between the daily rhythm of DST and BAT activity estimated
by 18F-FDG uptake is masked by environmental and likely behavioral
factors. Of note is that those participants exposed to the lowest ambient temperature
showed 3 to 5 times more BAT volume and activity compared with
subjects who were exposed to a warmer ambient temperature
