Facilitating Financial Sustainability: Understanding the Drivers of CSO Financial Sustainability
Financial sustainability remains a critical challenge for Civil Society Organization (CSOs) around the world. Although a variety of toolkits and research papers exist examining specific sustainability strategies , many CSOs continue to struggle to develop and maintain the resources needed to carry out their missions. The Facilitating Financial Sustainability (FFS) activity was launched in 2017 to develop and test ways that different actors (including donors, policymakers, intermediary organizations, and CSOs themselves) can work together to improve the factors that drive financial sustainability for local organizations in different developing world contexts. This paper covers an analysis of the drivers of CSO sustainability based on interviews with CSO representatives. This represents one part of the three-part FFS research series, and is best considered alongside the other papers in the series to give a holistic perspective on CSO financial sustainability: "Funder Approaches to Facilitating CSO Financial Sustainability", which provides an overview of the funding landscape for financial sustainability in the six countries included in the study, and "Facilitating Financial Sustainability: Synthesis Report", which brings together the key findings from both other papers in the series
Estrogenic or antiestrogenic therapies for multiple myeloma?
Multiple myeloma (MM) is a common hematological malignancy which remains incurable due to both intrinsic and acquired resistance to conventional or more novel drugs. Estrogenic and antiestrogenic compounds are very promising drugs for the treatment of MM. Indeed, they inhibit cell proliferation in vitro. They block cell cycle and/or induce apoptosis even in drug-resistant MM cells but not normal B cells. They interfere with survival pathways often deregulated in myelomas. They co-operate with conventional drugs to enhance apoptosis or to overcome resistance. In vivo, they act also on tumoral angiogenesis in xenograft models. As a whole, they possess all the criteria which render them attractive for a new therapeutic strategy. Importantly, they are well-tolerated at the doses tested in vitro or in vivo, encouraging the rapid onset of critical trials
For the past ten years, the city of Detroit in the United States has gone through a large-scale territorial reconversion. Culture has played a pivotal role in the process and, as almost everywhere else, it has been reshaped by discourses and policies on creativity and so-called “creative” industries and cities. This article resituates the transformation of discourse and policy within the broader framework of the transition towards cognitive-cultural capitalism. Next, it proposes to describe and explain the role of culture and creative industries in the recent social and spatial transformations taking place in Detroit. First, it focuses on the creativity narratives that have permeated local discourse since the end of the 2000s in Detroit and facilitated the convergence of various urban revitalization projects. Second, it examines the role of culture and the creative industries in changing the image of the city and prompting different modes of spatial production. The result is the creation of a new space, “Greater Downtown Detroit” which now seems to be separated from the rest of the city.
