    The drivers of eco‐innovations in small and medium‐sized enterprises: A systematic literature review and research directions

    The debate on innovations that contributes to the decoupling of economic growth and environmental degradation or fosters the transition from the brown to the green economy is becoming increasingly relevant in the academic and business worlds, fuelling a research stream that is proving very interesting for its economic, environmental and social implications. Although the debate on the adoption of environmental innovations is well underway, the discussion on eco-innovation in the context of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is at a less developed stage and deserves more attention, especially given the relevance of these companies in the economic system of several countries. Thus, this study proposes a systematic literature review of the determinants of eco-innovation in SMEs and explores the relationships among them by starting from the criticalities highlighted in the five literature reviews of determinants of eco-innovations in SMEs that have been recently published. The first step of the research concerns a detailed description of the selection process of the articles under consideration and of their characteristics. In the second step, 14 main categories of determinants are identified. Additionally, in the third step, as result of this investigation, three basilar research directions and 13 related research questions emerged

    Physical constraints on global social-ecological energy system

    Energy is the main driver of human Social-Ecological System (SES) dynamics. Collective energy properties of human SES can be described applying the principles of statistical mechanics: (i) energy consumption repartition; (ii) efficiency; (iii) performance, as efficient power, in relation to the least-action principle. International Energy Agency data are analyzed through the lens of such principles. Declining physical efficiency and growth of power losses emerge from our analysis. Losses mainly depend on intermediate system outputs and non-energy final output. Energy performance at Country level also depends on efficient power consumption. Better and worse performing Countries are identified accordingly. Five policy-relevant areas are identified in relation to the physical principles introduced in this paper: Improve efficiency; Decouple economic growth from environmental degradation; Focus on high value added and labor-intensive sectors; Rationalize inefficient fossil fuel subsidies that encourage wasteful consumption; Upgrade the technological capabilities. Coherently with our findings, policies should support the following actions: (1) redefine sectoral energy distribution shares; (2) Improve Country-level performance, if needed; (3) Reduce intermediate outputs and non-energy final output; (4) Reduce resources supply to improve eco-efficiency together with system performance

    A Multi-Criteria Approach to the Evaluation of Aviation e-marketplace portals

    After a proliferation of logistics e-Marketplaces during the dot.com boom of 1998-2000, there has been a high rate of failure and survivals are developing much more slowly than expected. This is the case of aviation industry where a large number of B2B e-Marketplaces emerged according to the focus of aviation companies’ strategies on electronic B2B in the late 1990s. However, the current use of e-Marketplaces in the industry is low and many of them have ceased trading. The traditional e-Marketplaces model have been characterised by poor quality of portals and the lack of technical standards. Such an approach is unsustainable in today’s competitive scenario. Improvements in websites quality attributes may strongly contribute to simplify the website functionalities by users and speed-up communication with all supply chain parties. In such context, it appears of critical importance to develop models for the evaluation of e-Marketplaces web sites.     Promoting circular economy transition: A study about perceptions and awareness by different stakeholders groups

    Abstract The interest into Circular Economy (CE), mainly emerged recently in response to climate change, environmental damage, and the limits of a linear economy, requires a deeper investigation on how the concept and its transition process are perceived in the society. In the present explorative study (questionnaire survey), we evaluate the perception and level of awareness of three stakeholder groups with a good knowledge on CE concept and governance of the transition process, specifically: Researchers, Economists, and Administrators. The three samples contain stakeholders from EU and non-EU countries. We developed primarily a comprehensive literature review on CE perceptions and awareness useful for the design of the questionnaire, the comparison of the results and in overall for creating a wider framework of analysis and interpretation of the current CE transition. The questionnaire has been tested on one of the three samples (Researchers) and then replicated on the other two ones (Economists and Administrators). The results of the survey shows that the three groups perceive CE as a "zero waste economy" (Administrators) and in wider terms as a model for re-design our present state of economy and society in a more regenerative manner (Researchers and Economists). Administrators seem more focused on utilizing CE for economic growth and job creation while Researchers and Economists mainly expect receiving environmental benefits from the CE transition. The three groups share a common vision of CE at its initial stage of the transition process in agree with the relevant literature. In that, a more successful advance of CE depends on the governance of the process by key actors and instruments. Researchers emphasize a more holistic top-down approach while Economists and Administrators expect a bottom-up approach guided by the civil society (companies and citizens/consumers). However, these results complement each other's as all the actors are relevant for fostering CE and a mixed set of instruments is needed. Moreover, given that implementation of CE is costly for consumers and companies, the political intervention has a leading role in this initial phase also in disseminating a positive and sustainable image of CE concept and model. At this regard the support of CE research to such intervention is highly important to develop a CE path in line with all the three principles of sustainable development, the desired outcome of the society and capable of facing the current unprecedent environmental challenges

    PPARγ Pro12Ala and ACE ID polymorphisms are associated with BMI and fat distribution, but not metabolic syndrome

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) results from the combined effect of environmental and genetic factors. We investigated the possible association of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ2 (PPARγ2) Pro12Ala and Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) I/D polymorphisms with MetS and interaction between these genetic variants.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Three hundred sixty four unrelated Caucasian subjects were enrolled. Waist circumference, blood pressure, and body mass index (BMI) were recorded. Body composition was estimated by impedance analysis; MetS was diagnosed by the NCEP-ATPIII criteria. A fasting blood sample was obtained for glucose, insulin, lipid profile determination, and DNA isolation for genotyping.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The prevalence of MetS did not differ across PPARγ2 or ACE polymorphisms. Carriers of PPARγ2 Ala allele had higher BMI and fat-mass but lower systolic blood pressure compared with Pro/Pro homozygotes. A significant PPARγ2 gene-gender interaction was observed in the modulation of BMI, fat mass, and blood pressure, with significant associations found in women only. A PPARγ2-ACE risk genotype combination for BMI and fat mass was found, with ACE DD/PPARγ2 Ala subjects having a higher BMI (p = 0.002) and Fat Mass (p = 0.002). Pro12Ala was independently associated with waist circumference independent of BMI and gender.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Carriers of PPARγ2 Ala allele had higher BMI and fat-mass but not a worse metabolic profile, possibly because of a more favorable adipose tissue distribution. A gene interaction exists between Pro12Ala and ACE I/D on BMI and fat mass. Further studies are needed to assess the contribution of Pro12Ala polymorphism in adiposity distribution.</p

    Protective Effects of Home T2DM Treatment with Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists and Sodium-Glucose Co-transporter-2 Inhibitors Against Intensive Care Unit Admission and Mortality in the Acute Phase of the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Retrospective Observational Study in Italy

    Introduction: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a relevant risk factor for severe forms of COVID-19 (SARS coronavrus 2 [SARS-CoV-2] disease 2019), and calls for caution because of the high prevalence of T2DM worldwide and the high mortality rates observed in patients with T2DM who are infected with SARS-CoV-2. People with T2DM often take dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP-4is), glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1ras), or sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT-2is), all of which have clear anti-inflammatory effects. The study aimed to compare (i) the severity and duration of hospital stay between patients with T2DM categorized by pre-hospitalization drug class utilization and (ii) the COVID-19-related death rates of those three groups.Methods: We designed an observational, retrospective, multi-center, population-based study and extracted the hospital admission data from the health care records of 1916 T2DM patients over 18 years old who were previously on GLP-1ra, SGLT-2i, or DPP-4i monotherapy and were hospitalized for COVID-19 (diagnosis based on ICD.9/10 codes) between January 2020 and December 2021 in 14 hospitals throughout Italy. We analyzed general data, pre-admission treatment schedules, date of admission or transfer to the intensive care unit (ICU) (i.e., the index date; taken as a marker of increased COVID-19 disease severity), and death (if it had occurred). Statistics analyzed the impact of drug classes on in-hospital mortality using propensity score logistic regressions for (i) those admitted to intensive care and (ii) those not admitted to intensive care, with a random match procedure used to generate a 1:1 comparison without diabetes cohort replacement for each drug therapy group by applying the nearest neighbor method. After propensity score matching, we checked the balance achieved across selected variables if a balance was ever achieved. We then used propensity score matching between the three drug classes to assemble a sample in which each patient receiving an SGLT-2i was matched to one on a GLP-1ra, and each patient on a DPP-4i was matched to one on a GLP-1ra, adjusting for covariates. We finally used GLP-1ras as references in the logistic regression.Results: The overall mortality rate (MR) of the patients was 14.29%. The MR in patients with COVID was 53.62%, and it was as high as 42.42% in the case of associated T2DM, regardless of any glucose-lowering therapy. In those on DPP-4is, there was excess mortality; in those treated with GLP-1ras and SGLT-2is, the death rate was significantly lower, i.e., almost a quarter of the overall mortality observed in COVID-19 patients with T2DM. Indeed, the odds ratio (OR) in the logistic regression resulted in an extremely high risk of in-hospital death in individuals previously treated with DPP-4is [incidence rate (IR) 4.02, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.2-5.7) and only a slight, nonsignificantly higher risk in those previously treated with SGLT-2is (IR 1.42, 95% CI 0.6-2.1) compared to those on GLP-1ras. Moreover, the longer the stay, the higher the death rate, which ranged from 22.3% for &lt;= 3-day stays to 40.3% for 4- to 14-day stays (p &lt; 0.01 vs. the former) and 77.4% for over-14-day stays (p &lt; 0.001 vs. both the others).Discussion: Our data do not support a protective role of DPP-4is; indeed, this role has already been questioned due to previous observations. However, the data do show a strong protective effect of SGLT-2is and GLP-1ras.Beyond lowering circulating glucose levels, those two drug classes were found to exert marked anti-phlogistic effects: SGLT-2is increased adiponectin and reduced urate, leptin, and insulin concentrations, thus positively affecting overall low-grade inflammation, and GLP-1ras may also greatly help at the lung tissue level, meaning that their extra-glycemic effects extend well beyond those acknowledged in the cardiovascular and renal fields.Conclusions: The aforedescribed observational clinical data relating to a population of Italian inpatients with T2DM suggest that GLP-1ras and SGLT-2is can be considered antidiabetic drugs of choice against COVID-19, and might even prove beneficial in the event of any upcoming pandemic that has life-threatening effects on the pulmonary and cardiovascular systems

    A roadmap for amphibious drilling at the Campi Flegrei caldera: insights from a MagellanPlus workshop

    Large calderas are among the Earth's major volcanic features. They are associated with large magma reservoirs and elevated geothermal gradients. Caldera-forming eruptions result from the withdrawal and collapse of the magma chambers and produce large-volume pyroclastic deposits and later-stage deformation related to post-caldera resurgence and volcanism. Unrest episodes are not always followed by an eruption; however, every eruption is preceded by unrest. The Campi Flegrei caldera (CFc), located along the eastern Tyrrhenian coastline in southern Italy, is close to the densely populated area of Naples. It is one of the most dangerous volcanoes on Earth and represents a key example of an active, resurgent caldera. It has been traditionally interpreted as a nested caldera formed by collapses during the 100–200 km3 Campanian Ignimbrite (CI) eruption at ∼39 ka and the 40 km3 eruption of the Neapolitan Yellow Tuff (NYT) at ∼15 ka. Recent studies have suggested that the CI may instead have been fed by a fissure eruption from the Campanian Plain, north of Campi Flegrei. A MagellanPlus workshop was held in Naples, Italy, on 25–28 February 2017 to explore the potential of the CFc as target for an amphibious drilling project within the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) and the International Continental Drilling Program (ICDP). It was agreed that Campi Flegrei is an ideal site to investigate the mechanisms of caldera formation and associated post-caldera dynamics and to analyze the still poorly understood interplay between hydrothermal and magmatic processes. A coordinated onshore–offshore drilling strategy has been developed to reconstruct the structure and evolution of Campi Flegrei and to investigate volcanic precursors by examining (a) the succession of volcanic and hydrothermal products and related processes, (b) the inner structure of the caldera resurgence, (c) the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of the hydrothermal system and offshore sediments, and (d) the geological expression of the phreatic and hydromagmatic eruptions, hydrothermal degassing, sedimentary structures, and other records of these phenomena. The deployment of a multiparametric in situ monitoring system at depth will enable near-real-time tracking of changes in the magma reservoir and hydrothermal system
