    This paper examines the relationship between statutory monopoly and collective action as a multi-person assurance game culminating in an end to British Empire in India. In a simple theoretical model, it is demonstrated whether or not a collective good enjoys (or is perceived to enjoy) pure jointness of production and why the evolutionary stable strategy of non-violence was supposed to work on the principle that the coordinated reaction of a ethnically differentiated religious crowd to a conflict between two parties (of colonizer and colonized) over confiscatory salt taxation would significantly affect its course. Following Mancur Olson (1965) and Dennis Chong (1991), a model of strategic civil disobedience is created which is used to demonstrate how collective action can be used to produce an all-or-nothing public good to achieve economic and political independence

    Evidence of Uncultivated Bacteria in the Adult Female Bladder

    Clinical urine specimens are usually considered to be sterile when they do not yield uropathogens using standard clinical cultivation procedures. Our aim was to test if the adult female bladder might contain bacteria that are not identified by these routine procedures. An additional aim was to identify and recommend the appropriate urine collection method for the study of bacterial communities in the female bladder. Consenting participants who were free of known urinary tract infection provided urine samples by voided, transurethral, and/or suprapubic collection methods. The presence of bacteria in these samples was assessed by bacterial culture, light microscopy, and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Bacteria that are not or cannot be routinely cultivated (hereinafter called uncultivated bacteria) were common in voided urine, urine collected by transurethral catheter (TUC), and urine collected by suprapubic aspirate (SPA), regardless of whether the subjects had urinary symptoms. Voided urine samples contained mixtures of urinary and genital tract bacteria. Communities identified in parallel urine samples collected by TUC and SPA were similar. Uncultivated bacteria are clearly present in the bladders of some women. It remains unclear if these bacteria are viable and/or if their presence is relevant to idiopathic urinary tract conditions

    International audienceReversible protein phosphorylation has an essential role during pre-mRNA splicing. Here we identify two previously unidentified phosphoproteins in the human spliceosomal B complex, namely the pre-mRNA processing factors PRP6 and PRP31, both components of the U4/U6-U5 tri-small nuclear ribonucleoprotein (snRNP). We provide evidence that PRP6 and PRP31 are directly phosphorylated by human PRP4 kinase (PRP4K) concomitant with their incorporation into B complexes. Immunodepletion and complementation studies with HeLa splicing extracts revealed that active human PRP4K is required for the phosphorylation of PRP6 and PRP31 and for the assembly of stable, functional B complexes. Thus, the phosphorylation of PRP6 and PRP31 is likely to have a key role during spliceosome assembly. Our data provide new insights into the molecular mechanism by which PRP4K contributes to splicing. They further indicate that numerous phosphorylation events contribute to spliceosome assembly and, thus, that splicing can potentially be modulated at multiple regulatory checkpoints
