Current Performance and Future Strength of Political Science

    Get PDF
The article and its five propositions question the current performance and future strength of political science as a discipline. Its empirics are based on the book series ‘The World of Political Science’, published between 2006 and 2012, on the development and current state of the various sub-disciplines, asking the question of ‘why we are where we are’ in political science. The topics discussed in the first section on the discipline’s actual strength are the relationship between the United States, Europe and the rest of the world, the advances and challenges of the discipline, and the issue of fragmentation and specialization. The second section addresses the relevance of political science to society and politics and the third the impact of current politics on the discipline. The text was presented at a preparatory conference in Helsinki in December 2013 and will be further discussed during a special round-table session at the International Political Science Association’s world congress in Montreal in July 2014. The propositions are intended to trigger debate among political scientists

What’s new? A first appraisal of the Juncker Commission

    Get PDF
Although still in its early phases, the Juncker Commission has already broken new ground. Not only is Jean-Claude Juncker the first Commission President to be selected by the Spitzenkandidaten process, an extra-constitutional system that has reconfigured the European Union’s institutional balance, but he has transformed the structure and operation of the College in order to create a more political, and therefore more effective, Commission, and made good – so far – on his promise ‘to do better on the bigger things and be small on the small things’. This article examines this three-fold transformation. It looks at the innovations and change associated with the Juncker Commission. It considers what motivated them and how they were achieved, sets them in historical perspective, and discusses their implications for the institutions and for the EU more broadly

Explaining variation in the effectiveness of transnational energy partnerships

    Get PDF
This article analyzes the effectiveness of transnational multi-stakeholder partnerships for sustainable development-also known as "Type II outcomes" of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development-in the sustainable energy sector. We combine quantitative and qualitative research. Quantitatively, we use a database of 340 partnerships, including 46 partnerships that focus on energy. Our qualitative analysis includes case studies of five partnerships that appear as the most effective and five that are operational but only with modest degrees of effectiveness. We study two competing hypotheses. The first, rooted in institutionalism, assumes that variation in effectiveness is related to organizational structures and procedures. The competing hypothesis emphasizes the power of actors and expects partnerships that involve key business actors and powerful Northern states to perform better. We conclude that the level of institutionalization is most important in explaining effectiveness, while powerful partners and the type of internal organization may further enhance effectiveness

    Get PDF
Design and synthesis of click lipids as tools to study immune cell metabolism

    Get PDF
This thesis advances our understanding of lipid uptake, a vital first step in lipid metabolism, by developing innovative click chemistry-based tools to study how immune cells internalize lipids. Traditional lipid-tracking techniques using bulky fluorophores can distort natural uptake. To overcome this, the study introduces bioorthogonal chemical modifications, especially small cyclopropene groups, to label fatty acids (FAs), cholesterol, and triglycerides without disrupting their structure or function. The research outlines the synthesis of clickable monounsaturated and saturated FAs and demonstrates their uptake in various immune cells, including T cells, B cells, and macrophages. Furthermore, live-cell compatible analogues of monounsaturated, saturated, and polyunsaturated FAs were synthesized to study lipid uptake in a complex mixture of primary immune cells. They proved non-toxic, accurately mimicked natural lipids, and enabled precise single-cell analysis and revealed remarkable differences between different immune cell types. Clickable triglyceride-rich lipoprotein-like particles were synthesized and injected into mice, revealing lipid uptake dynamics in organs and immune cells at single-cell resolution. These tools provide insights into lipid metabolism under physiological conditions. Future work will explore lipid uptake mechanisms, essential FA metabolism, and signaling lipids, with implications for immunology and therapy. This study advances lipid tracking and functional analysis in immune cells.Bio-organic Synthesi
