    Modeling user navigation

    Get PDF
This paper proposes the use of neural networks as a tool for studying navigation within virtual worlds. Results indicate that the network learned to predict the next step for a given trajectory. The analysis of hidden layer shows that the network was able to differentiate between two groups of users identified on the basis of their performance for a spatial task. Time series analysis of hidden node activation values and input vectors suggested that certain hidden units become specialised for place and heading, respectively. The benefits of this approach and the possibility of extending the methodology to the study of navigation in Human Computer Interaction applications are discussed

Global satellite triangulation and trilateration for the National Geodetic Satellite Program (solutions WN 12, 14 and 16)

    Get PDF
A multi-year study and analysis of data from satellites launched specifically for geodetic purposes and from other satellites useful in geodetic studies was conducted. The program of work included theoretical studies and analysis for the geometric determination of station positions derived from photographic observations of both passive and active satellites and from range observations. The current status of data analysis, processing and results are examined

Screening of Irish Fruit and Vegetable Germplasm for Novel Anti-tumour and Pesticidal Compounds

Conference paperPhytochemicals are a rich source of novel therapeutic and insecticidal agents (McLaughlin and Chang, 1999). Considerable research effort has been directed at screening exotic and medicinal plants in the search for novel products. However, plants which have traditional food uses have been little explored. In addition the range, type and level of individual bioactive compounds can vary significantly between different species, different cultivars of the same species and different tissue types of the plant (Reilly, in press) Therefore, the objective of this study was to screen a range of fruits and vegetables which can be grown in Ireland for novel bioactive compounds for use in food production and as bio-pesticides.The author wishes to acknowledge the financial support from the Dublin Institute of Technology through an ABBEST fellowshi

Long-term Structural Change in Plasmid DNA

    Get PDF
Long-term stability of plasmid DNA (pDNA) conformations is critical in many research areas, especially those concerning future gene therapy. Despite its importance, the timeevolution of pDNA structures has rarely been studied at a molecular resolution. Here, the time-evolution of pDNA solutions spanning four years was observed with atomic force microscopy (AFM). The AFM data show that the pDNA molecules evolved from isolated supercoiled structures; to aggregated supercoiled structures; to thin, branched network structures; and finally to wider, branched network structures. Additional topographical analysis of the AFM data suggests the actions of residual proteins could be the main mechanism for the structural changes in our laboratory prepared pDNA
