Factors Impacting on Organisational Learning in Three Rural Health Districts
Background: Access to quality health care in rural areas may be compromised not only by the inadequate numbers of skilled professional staff, but also by the lack of skills of the health professionals who are employed in rural facilities, due to inadequate continual professional learning and staff development. The objective of this paper is to examine the factors impacting on professional staff attendance of informal learning sessions in rural district hospitals and primary healthcare clinics.Methods: Structured, self-administered surveys, adapted from the Dimensions of a Learning Organization Questionnaire, were completed byprofessional staff on duty during data collection in 18 rural hospitals and their associated primary healthcare services facilities in three rural districts.The impacts of characteristics of staff, such as age, gender, professional experience and length of service, staffing levels, and the dimensions of alearning organisation, viz leadership, culture of change and teamwork, on attendance of learning sessions were considered.Results: Among professional nurses, attendance of learning sessions was significantly associated with the number of years of professionalexperience, length of service at the health facility, and scores on the teamwork dimension. While in the case of professional nurses attendance was not correlated with the staffing levels, the percentage of posts filled at the respective facilities and the assessment of hospital leadership as being supportive of learning were significant predictors of attendance among doctors.Conclusions: Despite severe staff shortages in these rural districts, at facilities where there was a perception of leadership and teamwork theprofessional staff generally attended learning sessions

On the formation of string cavitation inside fuel injectors
The formation of vortex or āstringā cavitation has been visualised in the flow upstream of the injection hole inlet of an automotive-sized optical diesel fuel injector nozzle operating at pressures up to 2,000 bar. Three different nozzle geometries and three-dimensional flow simulations have been employed to describe how, for two adjacent nozzle holes, their relative positions influenced the formation and hole-to-hole interaction of the observed string cavitation vortices. Each hole was shown to contain two counter-rotating vortices: the first extending upstream on axis with the nozzle hole into the nozzle sac volume and the second forming a single ābridgingā string linked to the adjacent hole. Steady-state and transient fuel injection conditions were shown to produce significantly different nozzle-flow characteristics with regard to the formation and interaction of these vortices in the geometries tested, with good agreement between the experimental and simulation results being achieved. The study further confirms that the visualised vortices do not cavitate themselves but act as carriers of gas-phase components within the injector flow
Flux moduli stabilisation, Supergravity algebras and no-go theorems
We perform a complete classification of the flux-induced 12d algebras
compatible with the set of N=1 type II orientifold models that are T-duality
invariant, and allowed by the symmetries of the T^6/(Z_2 x Z_2) isotropic
orbifold. The classification is performed in a type IIB frame, where only H_3
and Q fluxes are present. We then study no-go theorems, formulated in a type
IIA frame, on the existence of Minkowski/de Sitter (Mkw/dS) vacua. By deriving
a dictionary between the sources of potential energy for the three moduli (S, T
and U) in types IIA and IIB, we are able to combine algebra results and no-go
theorems. The outcome is a systematic procedure for identifying
phenomenologically viable models where Mkw/dS vacua may exist. We present a
complete table of the allowed algebras and the viability of their resulting
scalar potential, and we point at the models which stand any chance of
producing a fully stable vacuum.Comment: Version published in JHE

Football-induced fatigue in hypoxia impairs repeated sprint ability and perceptual-cognitive skills
The present study investigated the effects of football-induced fatigue during hypoxia on RS and perceptual-cognitive skills. Ten male semi-professional football players underwent four sessions; a control session (0-m) to quantify RS in a non-fatigued state; and three further sessions at hypoxia (0-m;1500-m;3000-m) examining RS and perceptual-cognitive skill responses for a given physical workload. Anticipation and decision-making accuracy were obtained at the 30-min mark of each half. The mean number of trials (%) in which the player made the correct response was used for analysis. HR, TC, RPE and % saturation of O2 were measured during the warm-up, football-induced fatigue and RS test. It was found that HR, RPE and % saturation of O2 were different between conditions (P<0.05; ES=0.44-6.13). Further, RS were affected by football-induced fatigue for DC (4.8%; P=0.019; ES=0.68) and AV (5.5%; P=0.006; ES=0.79). In hypoxia, it was observed that football-induced fatigue decreased by 6.5% in DC, 6.3% in AV and 3.1% in PV at 1500-m compared to 0-m (P<0.05). Further significant changes were found at 3000-m compared to 0-m decreasing 12.8% in DC, 12.8% in AV and 6.2% in PV (P<0.0005). More pronounced declines in perceptual-cognitive skills were found as altitude increased (5.0-12.5 %; P<0.05; ES=1.17-2.41) and between both halves (5.3-6.7 %; P<0.05). The data demonstrates that the RS test was highly sensitive to fatigue and hypoxia for a given physical load. Simulated matches in hypoxia revealed larger decreases, when compared to normoxia in RS and perceptual-cognitive skills, highlighting the need for optimal acclimatisation strategies, including physical and technical preparation, prior to playing a
Double Field Theory Formulation of Heterotic Strings
We extend the recently constructed double field theory formulation of the
low-energy theory of the closed bosonic string to the heterotic string. The
action can be written in terms of a generalized metric that is a covariant
tensor under O(D,D+n), where n denotes the number of gauge vectors, and n
additional coordinates are introduced together with a covariant constraint that
locally removes these new coordinates. For the abelian subsector, the action
takes the same structural form as for the bosonic string, but based on the
enlarged generalized metric, thereby featuring a global O(D,D+n) symmetry.
After turning on non-abelian gauge couplings, this global symmetry is broken,
but the action can still be written in a fully O(D,D+n) covariant fashion, in
