    Out-breeding behaviour and xenophobia in the Damaraland mole-rat, Cryptomys damarensis

    Out-breeding behaviour and xenophobia were investigated in laboratory colonies of the Damaraland mole-rat, Cryptomys damarensis. Foreign males and/or females were introduced into reproductively quiescent colonies and colonies which were actively breeding. Although males attempted to mate with familiar or related females, females only mated with foreign males. This suggests that female avoidance of incest is responsible for outbreeding in this species. Resident males in reproductively quiescent colonies did not attack foreign males or females. However, resident males in actively breeding colonies attacked and kilted foreign males. Resident females in reproductively quiescent colonies attacked foreign females but attempted to mate with foreign males. However, in colonies in which the breeding female was approaching parturition, resident non-breeding females also attacked foreign males. Once foreign females attained reproductive status in the colony into which they were introduced they killed all the resident females. These results suggest that xenophobia in the Damaraland mole-rat is influenced by whether or not the colony is actively breeding, and by the reproductive state of the breeding female

    A mathematical model of the evaporation of a thin sessile liquid droplet : comparison between experiment and theory

    A mathematical model for the quasi-steady diffusion-limited evaporation of a thin axisymmetric sessile droplet of liquid with a pinned contact line is formulated and solved. The model generalises the theoretical model proposed by Deegan et al. [Contact line deposits in an evaporating drop, Phys. Rev. E, 62 (2000) 756-765] to include the effect of evaporative cooling on the saturation concentration of vapour at the free surface of the droplet, and the dependence of the coefficient of diffusion of vapour in the atmosphere on the atmospheric pressure. The predictions of the model are in good qualitative, and in some cases also quantitative, agreement with recent experimental results. In particular, they capture the experimentally observed dependence of the total evaporation rate on the thermal conductivities of the liquid and the substrate, and on the atmospheric pressure

    Flux calibration of the AAO/UKST SuperCOSMOS H-alpha Survey

    The AAO/UKST SuperCOSMOS Hα\alpha Survey (SHS) was, when completed in 2003, a powerful addition to extant wide-field surveys. The combination of areal coverage, spatial resolution and sensitivity in a narrow imaging band, still marks it out today as an excellent resource for the astronomical community. The 233 separate fields are available online in digital form, with each field covering 25 square degrees. The SHS has been the motivation for equivalent surveys in the north, and new digital Hα\alpha surveys now beginning in the south such as VPHAS+. It has been the foundation of many important discovery projects with the Macquarie/AAO/Strasbourg Hα\alpha planetary nebula project being a particularly successful example. However, the full potential of the SHS has been hampered by lack of a clear route to acceptable flux calibration from the base photographic data. We have determined the calibration factors for 170 individual SHS fields, and present a direct pathway to the measurement of integrated Hα\alpha fluxes and surface brightnesses for resolved nebulae detected in the SHS. We also include a catalogue of integrated Hα\alpha fluxes for >>100 planetary and other nebulae measured from the SHS, and use these data to show that fluxes, accurate to ±\pm 0.10 - 0.14 dex (\sim25-35 per cent), can be obtained from these fields. For the remaining 63 fields, a mean calibration factor of 12.0 counts pix1^{-1} R1^{-1} can be used, allowing the determination of reasonable integrated fluxes accurate to better than ±\pm0.2 dex (\sim50 per cent). We outline the procedures involved and the caveats that need to be appreciated in achieving such flux measurements.     Homogeneous chromium catalysts for the selective conversion of ethene to hex-1-ene are formed from Cr(III) reagents, amino-thioether ligands of the type HN(CH2CH2SR)2, and aluminum reagents. In this study the early activation steps are investigated by EPR, UV-visible and Cr K-edge XAFS spectroscopy; rapid stopped-flow mixing and a freeze-quench allows good quality EXAFS analysis of a species formed in ~ 1 second of reaction. This is shown to involve reduction to Cr(II) and deprotonation of a NH group of the auxiliary ligand. This 4-coordinate metal-center may act as precursor for the coordination of ethene and subsequent selective oligomerization

    The strong influence of substrate conductivity on droplet evaporation

    We report the results of physical experiments that demonstrate the strong influence of the thermal conductivity of the substrate on the evaporation of a pinned droplet. We show that this behaviour can be captured by a mathematical model including the variation of the saturation concentration with temperature, and hence coupling the problems for the vapour concentration in the atmosphere and the temperature in the liquid and the substrate. Furthermore, we show that including two ad hoc improvements to the model, namely a Newton's law of cooling on the unwetted surface of the substrate and the buoyancy of water vapour in the atmosphere, give excellent quantitative agreement for all of the combinations of liquid and substrate considered

    A new recessive chlorophyll mutant was unexpectedly recovered in an F2 family of A76-518-3 (a homozygous partially male-sterile, msp msp plant) x A76-669 (a \u27Clark\u27 isoline homozygous for the chromosome translocation from PI 101,404B). Furthennore, the translocation did not appear in the F2 generation. We are uncertain as to whether the intended cross was unsuccessful and followed by a natural outcross, or if a new chromosomal rearrangement had taken place. The former seems more likely. The F2 population segregated the partial male sterility trait, so we are certain that a cross was involved

The plants were noticed because of their retention of chlorophyll when fertile plants had matured and turned brown.
