unhas poucas figuras illadas, deixando á parte a literatura medieval e facendo
Phonetic variation, the language of the public sphere, and oral standard: between linguistics and politics
A partir dese
certos aspectos do estándar escrito.[Abstract] Concern over language models, especially those present in public communication, has
been the subject of discussion in recent years, with the label of "language quality" or "authenticity." In this article it is argued that the study of variation, especially from the
perspective of interactional sociolinguistics, is needed to understand the behavior of people
who are using the language in the public space. From this knowledge, linguists will be
able to make useful contributions so that the people in these social spaces can develop the
varieties they need to achieve their communicative goals, but, as far as oral language is
concerned, those varieties cannot be planned from top to bottom, as some parts of the written
standard language do
Phonetic and phonological change in present-day Galician
Algúns son cambios espontáneos, outros dirixidos desde as instancias promotoras do galego estándar, e outros poden estar motivados por interferencia do español.[EN] This paper focuses on certain recent phonetic and
phonological changes which available data suggest
have occurred or are currently taking place in
traditional Galician (i.e. as transmitted from parents
to their children), including the development of pretonic
vowels, loss of the lateral [], alterations in the
realization of the dialectal phenomena known as
gheada and seseo, and changes in syllable structure.
Some of these changes are spontaneous and some are
due to the influence of institutions promoting standard
Galician, while others may result from Spanish
interference
A crosslinguistic study of voiceless fricative sibilants in Galician and European Portuguese
This study examines the sibilant fricatives produced by seventeen Galician and twenty-two Portuguese speakers. Galician and Portuguese are closely related languages that present important continuities, although it is in their phonological and phonetic systems that they diverge most obviously. By means of the analysis of spectra and spectral moments, chiefly the spectral mean, postalveolar sibilants and front (alveolar or alveolo-dental) sibilants are differentiated in both Galician and Portuguese. Much variation has been found in front sibilant realizations among speakers and even between different realizations by the same speaker. This variation is especially striking among male Galician speakers, where it was possible to distinguish three different articulations, identified here as an apico-aveolar [s̺], a lamino-alveolar [s], and a lamino-dental [s̪] sibilant. The research results point to a loss of phonetic diversity on the Portuguese side of the political border, while in Galicia it is better preserved, although it is losing groundThis paper was written within the project “Cambio lingüístico no galego actual”, funded by the Ministry of Economy and Competitivity of the Spanish Government (FFI2012-33845), and within the Tecnoloxías e Análise dos Datos Lingüísticos network, funded by the Xunta de Galicia (R2014/007
