An Indirect Usage of the Qurâan in the XVth century.
This paper focuses on an indirect use of the Qurâan in an inedited text, the "DĂ©bat du chrĂ©tien et du sarrasin". The "DĂ©bat" is a religious treatise written by the bishop Jean Germain (1396 ?-1461) for his patron Philip the Good of Burgundy. Although Germain claims that he relies on some âextraitz de lâArchorantâ, he draws all his Qurâanic material from two intermediate texts: the Titulus V of Petrus Alfonsiâs "Dialogi contra Iudaeos" and Peter of Toledoâs "Epistula Sarraceni et Rescriptum Christiani", the Latin translation of the Arabic "RisÄlat al-KindÄ«". Through the analysis of Germainâs translation choices, this paper shows the attitude the author has towards his sources and brings out a still stereotyped image of Islam and its Prophet
The essay analyses the translation of the tale of Narcissus in Alegreâs Catalan version of Metamorphosis. Alegreâs text is compared with the Latin text, with the Ovid moralisĂ© and with Boccaccioâs and Bonsignoriâs rewritings. The analysis shows a direct relationship with the Latin text but also some common features with the medieval versions and some individual characteristics. keywordsFrancesc Alegre, Ovide moralisĂ©, Narciso, Ovidio nel MedioevoFrancesc Alegre, Ovide moralisĂ©, Narcissus, Ovid in the Middle Age
Nota linguistica
Anna Maria Compagna, Michela Letizia & NĂșria Puigdevall Bafaluy, eds. La poesia oggettiva nella letteratura catalana medievale. Antologia di testi con traduzioni a fronte. Roma: Aracne [Dialogoi medievalia/3], 2019. 339 pp
Interferenza linguistica e costanti interpretative
The study aims to demonstrate the productivity of the concept of linguistic interference in the analysis of the lexical variation in the Devisement du Monde/Milione, with particular reference to Ramusio's edition. First, linguistic interference has a textual utility and helps examine, from a different perspective, the problem of Ramusio's sources. Secondly, the analysis of lexical variation serves for methodological purposes, since it shows not only the results of Ramusio's action, but also the outcomes of linguistic interferences dating back to previous tradition. Finally, the wide variety of examples offers a pretext for more general considerations about the relationship between copy and translation, formal and content mistakes, monogenetic linguistic contact and polygenetic cognitive operations
Modifications in Bone Matrix of Estrogen-Deficient Rats Treated with Intermittent PTH
Bone matrix dictates strength, elasticity, and stiffness to the bone. Intermittent parathyroid hormone (iPTH), a bone-forming treatment, is widely used as a therapy for osteoporosis. We investigate whether low doses of intermittent PTH (1-34) change the profile of organic components in the bone matrix after 30 days of treatment. Forty 6-month-old female Wistar rats underwent ovariectomy and after 3 months received low doses of iPTH administered for 30 days: daily at 0.3â”g/kg/day (PTH03) or 5â”g/kg/day (PTH5); or 3 times per week at 0.25â”g/kg/day (PTH025). After euthanasia, distal femora were processed for bone histomorphometry, histochemistry for collagen and glycosaminoglycans, biochemical quantification of sulfated glycosaminoglycans, and hyaluronan by ELISA and TUNEL staining. Whole tibiae were used to estimate the bone mineral density (BMD). Histomorphometric analysis showed that PTH5 increased cancellous bone volume by 6% over vehicle-treated rats. In addition, PTH5 and PTH03 increased cortical thickness by 21% and 20%, respectively. Tibial BMD increased in PTH5-treated rats and this group exhibited lower levels of chondroitin sulfate; on the other hand, hyaluronan expression was increased. Hormonal administration in the PTH5 group led to decreased collagen maturity. Further, TUNEL-positive osteocytes were decreased in the cortical compartment of PTH5 whereas administration of PTH025 increased the osteocyte death. Our findings suggest that daily injections of PTH at low doses alter the pattern of organic components from the bone matrix, favoring the increase of bone mass
