    Coding to Connect: Centering Joy and Community in Elementary Computer Science Education

    In this piece, we weave together personal reflections to explore the design and implementation of an unplugged, elementary computer science (CS) event, and examine the underlying pedagogical principles guiding this work.  Critical CS scholars have increasingly called for centering joy and connection within CS, while simultaneously decentering the neoliberal focus on workforce development.  We aimed to forefront these ideas with a CS event supported and led by a multi-stakeholder partnership between preservice teachers, staff, and faculty within California State University, Dominguez Hills’ College of Education, and the students, inservice teachers, and administration at 186th St. Elementary School.  Historically, CS is an inequitable and inaccessible field that does not prioritize diversity or inclusion.  By bringing together numerous stakeholders from across the community for a CS event centering joy, we hoped to shift perceptions and experiences of CS and find better ways of supporting and inspiring all our students and teachers. &nbsp

    Data revealed that disjunctions occurred between the teacher's intentions for making the assignments and the students interpretations of the assignments on some level with all three essays. Data analysis also indicated that the written texts which the students produced were shaped by sociocultural influences, personal and educational influences, intertextual influences, and motivational influences.Current studies of writing and literacy are focusing much attention on the construction of meaning through sociocultural approaches and semiotics. This social interactive and meaning constructive perspective involves not only the written text but also what the writer brings to the text and the contextual elements of the writing. This exploratory study had two primary focuses. It investigated how first year college composition students understood and interpreted classroom writing assignments and to what extent the teacher's intentions for the assignments were fulfilled by the students. Also, the study examined how the students constructed meaning from the classroom writing assignments and to what extent these meanings were shaped not only by personal knowledge and investment but also by social and cultural influences as well.The study was conducted in a first year Composition 1213 class at a two year college. Data were collected from the entire class as well as four volunteer student participants and the teacher. Concurrent think-aloud protocols from three essay assignments along with open-ended interviews over each assignment were the primary data sources. The protocol and interview data were collected from each of the volunteer student participants. The teacher also participated in four interviews. Observational and questionnaire data from the entire class and the teacher supplemented the primary data sources

    Excretion and Perception of a Characteristic Odor in Urine after Asparagus Ingestion: a Psychophysical and Genetic Study

    The urine of people who have recently eaten asparagus has a sulfurous odor, which is distinct and similar to cooked cabbage. Using a 2-alternative forced-choice procedure, we examined individual differences in both the production of the odorants and the perception of this asparagus odor in urine. We conclude that individual differences exist in both odorant production and odor perception. The biological basis for the inability to produce the metabolite in detectable quantities is unknown, but the inability to smell the odor is associated with a single nucleotide polymorphism (rs4481887) within a 50-gene cluster of olfactory receptors

    OBJETIVO: Discutir o diagnóstico diferencial das encefalites além daquelas de etiologia infecciosa, e alertar os pediatras para a possibilidade do diagnóstico de encefalite anti-receptor N-metil-D-aspartato (rNMDA) na população pediátrica, destacando suas principais características clínicas. \ud DESCRIÇÃO: Três pacientes apresentaram-se com uma síndrome neuropsiquiátrica inicial seguida de encefalopatia e transtornos de movimento. As características neuropsiquiátricas iniciais se desenvolveram ao longo de dias ou semanas, com mudanças comportamentais, ansiedade, confusão mental e regressão da fala. Em seguida, os pacientes evoluíram com distúrbios de movimento, caracterizados por coreoatetose ou distonia, acometendo a região orofacial e os membros. Após a exclusão das principais causas de encefalite, foram identificados anticorpos anti-rNMDA no soro e no líquido cefalorraquidiano. Não foram detectadas neoplasias durante a investigação etiológica. Os pacientes foram submetidos a imunossupressão, e dois deles tiveram uma recuperação neurológica completa. Um deles ainda apresenta uma postura distônica leve em um dos membros. \ud COMENTÁRIOS: Os sinais clínicos de encefalite anti-rNMDA em crianças são semelhantes aos anteriormente descritos em adultos. Tumores geralmente não são detectados nessa idade. O diagnóstico de encefalite anti-rNMDA deve ser abordado após a exclusão de outras causas de encefalite na infância, como as de origem infecciosa. Pediatras devem estar atentos a essa condição autoimune passível de tratamento.Objective: To discuss the differential diagnosis of encephalitis beyond that of infectious etiology and to inform pediatricians about the possibility of anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAr) encephalitis in children by highlighting its most important clinical features. Description: Three patients presented with an initial neuropsychiatric syndrome followed by encephalopathy and movement disorder. The initial neuropsychiatric features which developed over days to weeks included a change in personality, anxiety, confusion, and speech regression. This was followed by a choreoathetoid or dystonic movement disorder affecting the orofacial region and the limbs. After the exclusion of the major causes of encephalitis, NMDAr antibodies were identified in serum and cerebrospinal fluid, and neoplasm screening did not detect any tumor. Patients were submitted to immunosuppression, and two of them had a full neurological recovery. One of them still presents a mild dystonic posture in a limb. Comments: Clinical signs of anti-NMDAr encephalitis in children are similar to those previously described in adults. Tumors are not usually detected by this age. The diagnosis of anti-NMDAr encephalitis must be addressed only after the exclusion of infectious and other recognizable causes of encephalitis. Pediatricians should be aware of this treatable autoimmune condition

    Governance and Susceptibility in Conflict Resolution: Possibilities Beyond Control

    Governmentality analysis offers a nuanced critique of informal Western conflict resolution by arguing that recently emerged alternatives to adversarial court processes both govern subjects and help to constitute rather than challenge formal regulation. However, this analysis neglects possibilities for transforming governance from within conflict resolution that are suggested by Foucault's contention that there are no relations of power without resistances. To explore this lacuna, I theorise and explore the affective and interpersonal nature of governance in mediation through autoethnographic reflection upon mediation practice, and Levina's insights about the relatedness of selves. The paper argues that two qualitatively different mediator capacities - technical ability and susceptibility - operate in concert to effect liberal governance. Occasionally though, difficulties and failures in mediation practice bring these capacities into tension and reveal the limits of governance. By considering these limits in mediation with Aboriginal Australian people, I argue that the susceptibility of mediator selves contains prospects for mitigating and transforming the very operations of power occurring through conflict resolution. This suggests options for expanded critical thinking about power relations operating through informal processes, and for cultivating a susceptible sensibility to mitigate liberal governance and more ethically respond to difference through conflict resolution

    Indications of Conical Emission of Charged Hadrons at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider

    Three-particle azimuthal correlation measurements with a high transverse momentum trigger particle are reported for pp, d+Au, and Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV by the STAR experiment. Dijet structures are observed in pp, d+Au and peripheral Au+Au collisions. An additional structure is observed in central Au+Au data, signaling conical emission of correlated charged hadrons.
