    Benchmarking hypercube hardware and software

    Get PDF
It was long a truism in computer systems design that balanced systems achieve the best performance. Message passing parallel processors are no different. To quantify the balance of a hypercube design, an experimental methodology was developed and the associated suite of benchmarks was applied to several existing hypercubes. The benchmark suite includes tests of both processor speed in the absence of internode communication and message transmission speed as a function of communication patterns

The Next Step in Civil Asset Forfeiture Reform: Passing the Civil Asset Forfeiture Reform Act of 2014

    Get PDF
Civil asset forfeiture is an operation of legal fiction that enables the government to seize property without an underlying conviction of the property owner. Federal authorities bring thousands of civil asset forfeiture cases annually, often against the property of owners who have not been charged with a crime. Such cases can result in unjust outcomes and denials of due process to property owners. To address this controversy, Representative Tim Walberg proposed several reforms to federal civil asset forfeiture laws known as the Civil Asset Forfeiture Reform Act of 2014 (CAFRA 2014). After discussing the history of civil asset forfeiture, this Note analyzes CAFRA 2014 and examines its potential impact on the civil asset forfeiture process. This Note then reviews some deficiencies with current federal civil forfeiture laws and will examine the proposed changes in CAFRA 2014. After considering the positive impact that the proposed changes could have on civil asset forfeiture, this Note argues that Congress should pass CAFRA 2014 to provide beneficial reforms to federal civil asset forfeiture laws

    All- Star Sports Honors Analysis

As requested, I have read and analyzed the case, “Decision Making at the Top: The All- Star Sports Catalog Division.” This case detailed an issue that many organizations face at some point as many organizations tend to make changes to its decision making process. The All-Star Sports Catalog Division (ASC) is one of three divisions within the All-Star Sports organization. Since its establishment in 1990, the division has performed well and expanded greatly. Much of this success resulted from the decision making process developed by ASC President, Don Barrett. The process is very fundamental and wellstructured, which has allowed the company to make the best decision possible after much analytical thinking. However, though the ASC division produced profitable results under Barrett, the decision making process was questioned and a consultant was hired to analyze the ASC’s decision making process and gauge employees’ level of satisfaction of factors such as team member participation, meeting agenda, team effectiveness, etc. Based on the consultant’s research, Don Barrett was presented with three choices of how he could alter the ASC decision making process to improve overall performance

The shadow of patronage: Lewis Stephens and ‘the ecclesiastical climbers’

Drawing extensively on hitherto unexplored manuscript sources, this article outlines, first, the functioning of patronage within the eighteenth‐century church, with particular reference to the formation of Lewis Stephens's clerical identity. This provides a foundation for, second, the interrogation of Stephens's satirical compositions, and especially the depiction of his former patron Archbishop Lancelot Blackburne. Finally, the relationship between Stephens's contributions to public religious discourse, clerical conduct and private literary compositions and those of other leading satirists and writers of the period is analysed in order to illuminate the interplay between the roles of clergyman and writer in Walpolean Britain

    ASSESSMENT OF FIFTH METATARSAL ETIOLOGY

The fifth metatarsal \u27Jones Fracture\u27 is a fracture that occurs 3.5cm distal to the tuberosity. It is an injury that is common in athletes, especially those who participate in sports with a lot of lateral movement. The Jones Fracture is known for its difficulty to heal due to non-union and re-fracture. There has been much research recently regarding in-shoe pressure distributions and their relation to shoe type, movement, and shoe surface interaction. However, only the forces along the bottom of the foot have been investigated. Literature and the direction of fracture seem to implicate a force on the lateral portion of the foot is the cause of the fracture though the exact causal forces are still largely unknown. Until now technology has limited researchers in the investigation of the forces distributed along the lateral portion of the foot. SensorTech is a moldable ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene sensor that is capable of reading those forces. Its wireless application will also allow for forces to be read while an athlete performs a series of maneuvers without being encumbered. In order to best utilize this new technology the variables applicable to the jones fracture needed to be determined. To accomplish this, a survey was sent to the head athletic trainers of all of the Division 1 Football Bowl Subdivision and Football Championship Subdivision\u27s Universities. The survey addressed shoe types worn, number of fractures incurred, what movement was being performed, surface being played on, how it was treated, and what the return to play time was. The information gleaned from the survey was used to design a study in which athletes will be run through a series of maneuvers and while the forces along the fifth metatarsal are recorded. The survey revealed that Division 1 Bowl Subdivision athletes are significantly more likely to receive a fracture. Lateral cuts were also found to cause significantly more fractures than any other movement. Possible contributors were found to be Nike cleats (in one of the two years) and artificial turf. Those factors are all addressed in the study design in order to provide definitive results of how each factor affects the forces. This information could lead to the development of a method of Jones Fracture prevention
