    Evaluation of African oil palm germplasm for drought tolerance

    A field experiment was conducted at ARS Campus, Gangavati, University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot to evaluate the oil palm genotypes for drought tolerance under medium black soils of Tungabhadra Command area of Karnataka. Nine oil palm genotypes were collected from Zambia and Tanzania for drought tolerance studies under rainfed conditions. The genotype ZS-3 recorded significantly higher fresh fruit bunch (FFB) yield 7.0 t ha-1 over Z-6, ZS-8, ZS-8, ZS-9, TS-5 and TS-7. Number of bunches were significantly higher in the genotypes ZS-3 (4.4) followed by ZS-1 (4.1) and ZS-9 (4.0). Bunch weight was significantly higher in the genotype ZS-3 (11.2 kg bunch-1) followed by ZS-5 (10.8 kg bunch-1) and ZS-6 (9.4 kg bunch-1). The number of fruits per bunch was significantly higher in the genotype ZS-8 (3031) over all other genotypes. The number of male inflorescence was lower with the genotype ZS-5 and TS-5 (7.8 and 8.0 respectively). The number of female inflorescence was higher with the genotypes ZS-3 and TS-5 (7.0 and 7.0, respectively). Per cent sex ratio was higher with the genotype TS-5 and ZS-5 (46.2 and 44.8, respectively). The genotype ZS-1 and ZS-5 recorded higher annual leaf production of 21.4 and 20.3, respectively. The genotype ZS-1 recorded significantly lower number of leaf scorched per palm of 2.2 over other genotypes but it was on par with genotype ZS-3 (3.6). The data on various physiological and biochemical parameters revealed that the genotype ZS-1 and ZS-3 recorded higher relative water content, lower electrolyte leaching and significantly lower peroxidase activity indicating relatively more stress tolerant than other tested genotypes

    Using Growth Factors in Human Extraction Sockets: A Histologic and Histomorphometric Evaluation of Short-Term Healing

    Purpose: Ridge preservation protocols reduce crestal remodeling after tooth extraction. There is insufficient evidence on bone grafting in combination with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or recombinant human platelet-derived growth factor (rhPDGF-BB). The aim of this study is to evaluate healing of grafted and nongrafted sockets and the effect of PRP and rhPDGF-BB on early remodeling. Materials and Methods: Forty-one patients whose treatment plan included extraction of anterior or premolar teeth were randomized into four groups. Group 1: collagen plug (control). Group 2: mineralized freeze-dried bone allograft (FDBA)/β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP)/collagen plug. Group 3: FDBA/β-TCP/PRP/collagen plug. Group 4: FDBA/β-TCP/rhPDGF-BB/collagen plug. At 8 weeks, a core was harvested from the center of 41 sockets. Histomorphometric analysis took place. Differences were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) or chi-square tests for continuous and categorical data. Pairwise comparisons were tested using least squares means. Spearman correlation coefficients were used to evaluate the relationship of bone growth with potential confounders. A P value < .05 was considered statistically significant. Results: ANOVA did not indicate statistical significance in age, gender, smoking, ethnicity, or race distribution. Significant differences in tissue distribution were identified between groups and between different thirds of harvested core. More new bone and amorphous organic matrix was noted in the control group. In sites where bone graft was combined with growth factors, the amount of residual particles was less than in sites where bone graft was used alone. Conclusions: Inclusion of bone replacement graft suppressed new bone formation during early healing. Inclusion of PRP and rhPDGF-BB produced less residual bone graft material, indicating more rapid turnover of bone graft. All treatment modalities achieved a significant amount of new vital bone at 8 weeks postextraction

    Multilayered feed forward Artificial Neural Network model to predict the average summer-monsoon rainfall in India

    In the present research, possibility of predicting average summer-monsoon rainfall over India has been analyzed through Artificial Neural Network models. In formulating the Artificial Neural Network based predictive model, three layered networks have been constructed with sigmoid non-linearity. The models under study are different in the number of hidden neurons. After a thorough training and test procedure, neural net with three nodes in the hidden layer is found to be the best predictive model.Comment: 19 pages, 1 table, 3 figure

Yet to date, very few if any have lead the realisation of a commercial scale industrial system and is the context under which this review has been undertaken. The state-of the–art is evaluated for opportunities, and the key barriers to the development of new microwave-based processing techniques to enhance production, processing and recycling of cement and concrete materials. Applications reviewed include pyro-processing of cement clinker; accelerated curing, non-destructive testing and evaluation (NDT&E), and end-of-life processing including radionuclide decontamination

    Nanoparticles for Applications in Cellular Imaging

    In the following review we discuss several types of nanoparticles (such as TiO2, quantum dots, and gold nanoparticles) and their impact on the ability to image biological components in fixed cells. The review also discusses factors influencing nanoparticle imaging and uptake in live cells in vitro. Due to their unique size-dependent properties nanoparticles offer numerous advantages over traditional dyes and proteins. For example, the photostability, narrow emission peak, and ability to rationally modify both the size and surface chemistry of Quantum Dots allow for simultaneous analyses of multiple targets within the same cell. On the other hand, the surface characteristics of nanometer sized TiO2allow efficient conjugation to nucleic acids which enables their retention in specific subcellular compartments. We discuss cellular uptake mechanisms for the internalization of nanoparticles and studies showing the influence of nanoparticle size and charge and the cell type targeted on nanoparticle uptake. The predominant nanoparticle uptake mechanisms include clathrin-dependent mechanisms, macropinocytosis, and phagocytosis

    Post-acute COVID-19 neuropsychiatric symptoms are not associated with ongoing nervous system injury

    A proportion of patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 experience a range of neuropsychiatric symptoms months after infection, including cognitive deficits, depression and anxiety. The mechanisms underpinning such symptoms remain elusive. Recent research has demonstrated that nervous system injury can occur during COVID-19. Whether ongoing neural injury in the months after COVID-19 accounts for the ongoing or emergent neuropsychiatric symptoms is unclear. Within a large prospective cohort study of adult survivors who were hospitalized for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection, we analysed plasma markers of nervous system injury and astrocytic activation, measured 6 months post-infection: neurofilament light, glial fibrillary acidic protein and total tau protein. We assessed whether these markers were associated with the severity of the acute COVID-19 illness and with post-acute neuropsychiatric symptoms (as measured by the Patient Health Questionnaire for depression, the General Anxiety Disorder assessment for anxiety, the Montreal Cognitive Assessment for objective cognitive deficit and the cognitive items of the Patient Symptom Questionnaire for subjective cognitive deficit) at 6 months and 1 year post-hospital discharge from COVID-19. No robust associations were found between markers of nervous system injury and severity of acute COVID-19 (except for an association of small effect size between duration of admission and neurofilament light) nor with post-acute neuropsychiatric symptoms. These results suggest that ongoing neuropsychiatric symptoms are not due to ongoing neural injury

    Global Retinoblastoma Presentation and Analysis by National Income Level

    Importance: Early diagnosis of retinoblastoma, the most common intraocular cancer, can save both a child's life and vision. However, anecdotal evidence suggests that many children across the world are diagnosed late. To our knowledge, the clinical presentation of retinoblastoma has never been assessed on a global scale. Objectives: To report the retinoblastoma stage at diagnosis in patients across the world during a single year, to investigate associations between clinical variables and national income level, and to investigate risk factors for advanced disease at diagnosis. Design, Setting, and Participants: A total of 278 retinoblastoma treatment centers were recruited from June 2017 through December 2018 to participate in a cross-sectional analysis of treatment-naive patients with retinoblastoma who were diagnosed in 2017. Main Outcomes and Measures: Age at presentation, proportion of familial history of retinoblastoma, and tumor stage and metastasis. Results: The cohort included 4351 new patients from 153 countries; the median age at diagnosis was 30.5 (interquartile range, 18.3-45.9) months, and 1976 patients (45.4) were female. Most patients (n = 3685 84.7%) were from low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). Globally, the most common indication for referral was leukocoria (n = 2638 62.8%), followed by strabismus (n = 429 10.2%) and proptosis (n = 309 7.4%). Patients from high-income countries (HICs) were diagnosed at a median age of 14.1 months, with 656 of 666 (98.5%) patients having intraocular retinoblastoma and 2 (0.3%) having metastasis. Patients from low-income countries were diagnosed at a median age of 30.5 months, with 256 of 521 (49.1%) having extraocular retinoblastoma and 94 of 498 (18.9%) having metastasis. Lower national income level was associated with older presentation age, higher proportion of locally advanced disease and distant metastasis, and smaller proportion of familial history of retinoblastoma. Advanced disease at diagnosis was more common in LMICs even after adjusting for age (odds ratio for low-income countries vs upper-middle-income countries and HICs, 17.92 95% CI, 12.94-24.80, and for lower-middle-income countries vs upper-middle-income countries and HICs, 5.74 95% CI, 4.30-7.68). Conclusions and Relevance: This study is estimated to have included more than half of all new retinoblastoma cases worldwide in 2017. Children from LMICs, where the main global retinoblastoma burden lies, presented at an older age with more advanced disease and demonstrated a smaller proportion of familial history of retinoblastoma, likely because many do not reach a childbearing age. Given that retinoblastoma is curable, these data are concerning and mandate intervention at national and international levels. Further studies are needed to investigate factors, other than age at presentation, that may be associated with advanced disease in LMICs. © 2020 American Medical Association. All rights reserved
