    Design and validation of a railway inspection system to detect lateral track geometry defects based on axle-box accelerations registered from in-service trains

    Metropolitan railway transport has become an efficient solution to the mobility necessities in urban areas. Railway track maintenance tasks have to be improved and adjusted to metropolitan requirements, in particular the few hours available to operate due to the high frequency service offered. This paper describes and proposes an inertial monitoring system to detect and estimate track irregularities by using in-service vehicles. A new maintenance strategy is established, based on the railway track conditions and continuous monitoring is provided to do so. The system proposed consists of at least two accelerometers mounted on the bogie axle-box and a GPS (Global Positioning System). Lateral accelerations have been analyzed to study gauge and lateral alignment deviations. Accelerations have been treated and processed by high-pass filtering and validation has been carried out by comparison with measurements provided by a track monitoring trolley.     Electrophoretic Analysis of the Serum Proteins of Normal Newborn Infants

    The protein components of the serum of newborn infants have occupied the attention of few investigators. McKhann and Kapnick (1) pointed out that newborn infants show an immunity to many diseases during the first months of life. Electrophoretic studies carried out by Tiselius and Kabat (2) demonstrated that the gamma globulin fraction of the serum contains the antibodies. Other investigators (3, 4, 5) reported a low ratio of albumin to globulin in the serum of newborn infants. The increase in globulin was shown to be mainly in the gamma globulin component (6, 7, 8, 9). Since the technique of filter paper electrophoresis is adaptable to small quantities of serum, it is a useful method for the fractionation of the proteins of the serum of newborn infants. This study was undertaken to determine normal values for the serum protein components of newborn infants employing the technique of paper and free electrophoresis. It is hoped that these normal values will find use as a base line in further studies of serum proteins in newborn infants

    Railway traffic induced vibrations: comparison of analytical and finite element models

    The recent increase in the use of the railway and the establishment of more restrictive policies of harmful environmental effects of railway transport highlights the need to investigate ground vibrations related to trains. Therefore models to evaluate how this phenomenon affects have been performed. This article aims to expose both analytical and 3D-FE models and to compare theoretical formulation and results. Models have been calibrated and validated with real data. Furthermore, a simulation of the acceleration level of different railway infrastructure elements has been achieved

    Assessment of Grazing Procedures in the Evaluation of Plant Breeding Material

    Four stocking densities (2, 3, 5 and 9 sheep/18 m2 for one hour) and two times of grazing (morning or evening) were imposed on a spaced plant nursery of nine red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) populations of varying growth habit, in order to optimize measurement of sheep grazing preference. Plant height, spread and leafiness were measured before and after each of three grazings. Sheep preference was viewed multivariately, using combined measurements of these plant characteristics. MANOVA revealed that the effect of stocking density was significant (P-0.05), but that of time of grazing was not. The plant, population and overall heritabilities were non-significant (P\u3e0.05) for before-and-after grazing differences for all characteristics, and also for leafiness after grazing. Overall heritabilities for after-grazing spread and height were significant at 0.37 and 0.30, respectively. Sampling reliability at the 5 sheep/18 m2 stocking density was 94%, which was superior to the lower grazing intensities; this stocking density was considered to be the best for subsequent evaluation work.     Modeling wave propagation through an analytical surface model

    Nowadays there is a certain development in the use of railway, especially in the form of trams and underground lines in urban areas. Despite its many advantages, this kind of transport is a significant source of vibrations, which may affect residents and buildings near to the track. Wave transmission through the ground is therefore a phenomenon of particular interest. The object of this article is to formulate and test an analytical model of vibration propagation through the terrain surface. The model is based on the wave equation and takes into account wave scattering and reflection in the interfaces between different soil layers. A sensitivity analysis of its main parameters is carried out, and then a comprehensive set of simulations is made to test model performance and analyze factors such as load magnitude and velocity or soil configuration. The model has proved to be an interesting instrument to study the vibration phenomenon from a theoretical point of view and some improvements are proposed to turn it into a tool for engineers and designers

    [EN] Important track degradation occurs in structure-embankment transitions, in which an abrupt change in track vertical stiffness arises, leading to a reduction in passengers comfort and safety. Although granular wedges are suggested by different railroad administrations as a solution to avoid these problems, they present some disadvantages which may affect track long-term performance. In this paper, a new solution designed with prefabricated reinforced concrete slabs is proposed. The aim of this solution is to guarantee a continuous and gradual track vertical stiffness transition in the vicinity of structures, overcoming granular wedges disadvantages.     Role of toxin activation on binding and pore formation activity of the Bacillus thuringiensis Cry3 toxins in membranes of Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say)

    AbstractBinding and pore formation constitute key steps in the mode of action of Bacillus thuringiensis δ-endotoxins.In this work, we present a comparative analysis of toxin-binding capacities of proteolytically processed Cry3A, Cry3B and Cry3C toxins to brush border membranes (BBMV) of the Colorado potato beetle Leptinotarsa decemlineata (CPB), a major potato coleopteran-insect pest. Competition experiments showed that the three Cry3 proteolytically activated toxins share a common binding site. Also heterologous competition experiments showed that Cry3Aa and Cry3Ca toxins have an extra binding site that is not shared with Cry3Ba toxin. The pore formation activity of the three different Cry3 toxins is analysed. High pore-formation activities were observed in Cry3 toxins obtained by proteolytical activation with CPB BBMV in contrast to toxins activated with either trypsin or chymotrypsin proteases. The pore-formation activity correlated with the formation of soluble oligomeric structures. Our data support that, similarly to the Cry1A toxins, the Cry3 oligomer is formed after receptor binding and before membrane insertion, forming a pre-pore structure that is insertion-competent
