    Mediating family play: Exploring the expectations of digital media through a mobile application designed to facilitate real-world child–parent play

    This article highlights the necessity of considering socio-cultural values and attitudes when designing digital media, through presenting a study that explores parental attitudes toward play and digital media in childhood. Here we present a study examining the effectiveness of a mobile application designed to encourage real-world play between parents and their children (aged three to five years old). A series of quasi-naturalistic play spaces were created in child-centric organisations with parents visiting these organisations invited to use the play space — including tablet devices loaded with the application. Surveys – including open and closed questions – were collected from 28 parents along with observational data focusing on parent–child–screen interactions. The research highlights a tension between the physicality and preconceptions of digital devices and parent–child play. We also note the mobilisation of the notion ‘quality time’ as somewhat antithetical to digital play — indeed, expectations of digital devices in childhood, alongside a presumed developmental purpose of certain forms of play, impacted the capacity of this application to facilitate real-world play. These findings and resulting methodological discussion have implications for both the design of mobile applications and future research. Moreover, this article highlights some of the values and assumptions that influence parental expectations of purposing play and digital media

    Reconnaissance Survey of the Irish Continental Shelf/Shelf Edge - Atlantic Irish Regional Survey (AIRS) 1996: A GLORIA Survey of the Irish Continental Margin

    The Atlantic Irish Regional Survey (AIRS96) sidescan sonar survey was carried out in August 1996. Covering an area of 200,000 sq.km it represented the largest reconnaissance seabed survey of the Irish Continental Shelf region. It covered both margins, together with much of the basin floor, of the Irish sector of the Rockall Trough and extended into the northern part of the Porcupine Seabight. The objectives of this project were two fold: 1. Strategic: •to undertake, for the first time a preliminary reconnaissance survey of the Irish Continental Shelf/Shelf Edge, •to establish a strategic database on Shelf/Slope Edge conditions, •to provide training and experience to Irish researchers in state of the art marine surveying equipment (GLORIA) and data processing. 2. Scientific: •to document slope stability and mass wasting features on the margins of the Rockall Trough, •to map, where possible, occurrences of deep water carbonate mounds, •to investigate the sediment erosional, transport and depositional mechanisms that have shaped the present morphology of the region. The survey revealed a range of sedimentary features across the steep (i.e. >6º slope) margins and the basin floor in the Rockall Trough. Four classes of sedimentary feature are recognised: (1) mass failure, (2) canyon systems, (3) sediment fans, and (4) sediment drifts. The western margin is characterised by large-scale downslope mass movement features. The western and central parts of the basin floor in the Rockall Trough contain the Feni Sediment Ridge, a large Miocene-Recent contourite sediment accumulation draped by large sediment waves trending sub-parallel to the dominant modern current pattern. A large-scale downslope mass failure feature is recognised across 14,000 sq.km of the northeastern margin of the Rockall Trough. Smaller slides and slumps occur along the eastern margin in association with more prevalent canyon, channel and fan systems. A cluster of carbonate mounds was imaged in the northern part of the Porcupine Seabight. These represent part of one of the most extensive suites of deep-water carbonate mounds in the Atlantic Margin and are currently the subject of a number of new EU-funded research projects. Strong northward-directed bottom currents along the eastern margin are suggested to erode, circulate and re-deposit sediment on the basin floor and on the western margin of the Rockall Trough. The main terrigenous sedimentary input was from the Irish Mainland Shelf. A broad interplay of alongslope and downslope sediment transport processes shaped the morphology of the Rockall Trough, while tectonically-driven basin subsidence, Quaternary glaciations and glacio-eustatic sea-level fluctuations also influenced the overall sedimentation pattern in the Rockall Trough.Funder: Marine Institut

    Species specific anaesthetics for fish anaesthesia and euthanasia.

    There is a need to ensure that the care and welfare for fish maintained in the laboratory are to the highest standards. This extends to the use of anaesthetics for both scientific study, humane killing and euthanasia at end of life. An anaesthetic should not induce negative behaviours and fish should not seek to avoid the anaesthetic. Surprisingly little information is available to facilitate a humane choice of anaesthetic agent for fish despite over 100 years of use and the millions of fish currently held in thousands of laboratories worldwide. Using a chemotaxic choice chamber we found different species specific behavioural responses among four closely related fish species commonly held in the laboratory, exposed to three widely used anaesthetic agents. As previously found for zebrafish (Danio rerio), the use of MS-222 and benzocaine also appears to induce avoidance behaviours in medaka (Oryzias latipes); but etomidate could provide an alternative choice. Carp (Cyprinus carpio), although closely related to zebrafish showed avoidance behaviours to etomidate, but not benzocaine or MS-222; and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) showed no avoidance to the three agents tested. We were unable to ascertain avoidance responses in fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) and suggest different test paradigms are required for that species

    Saturation magnetostriction and its low-temperature variation inferred for natural titanomaghemites: implications for internal stress control of coercivity in oceanic basalts

    Highly oxidized titanomaghemite in oceanic basalts often carries remanent magnetization of high coercivity (stability), helping preserve the oceanic magnetic anomaly pattern. We study the source of this high coercivity in four oceanic basalts (from ODP sites 238, 572D, 470A and 556) containing highly oxidized titanomaghemite (titanium content parameter x ≈ 0.55 and oxidation parameter z ≈ 0.9 on average). Most of the titanomaghemite is likely in singledomain grains with uniaxial anisotropy because the ratio of saturation remanence J RS to saturation magnetization Js approaches 0.50 (JRS/JS = 0.46 on average). We show that the uniaxial anisotropy is very likely magnetostrictively controlled through internal stresses σi in the titanomaghemite grains. This allows us to use a novel indirect method to estimate the saturation magnetostriction λS of the titanomaghemite. A saturation remanence J RS is given along the axis of a cylindrical sample of each basalt. Then a small compression σ is applied repeatedly along this axis and the reversible change ∆JRS in JRS is measured. Combining equations from single-domain theory for this piezomagnetic effect and for the sample’s coercive force HC gives λS = 1.39HCJS 1/σ ∆JRS/JRS (using cgs units, or with HC in mT, J S in kA m and σ in Pa). This yields four λS estimates (with ca 50 per cent expected error) ranging from 3 × 10−6 to 10 × 10−6 and averaging 6 × 10−6. Theory for the piezomagnetic effect yields four σ i estimates averaging 2 × 108 Pa. This is similar to the internal stress magnitude thought to be responsible for the high coercivity of ball-milled single-domain titanomagnetite (x ≈ 0.6) and natural single-domain haematite. We also show that cooling to 120 ◦K causes HC J S for each oceanic basalt to vary in approximate proportion to (1− T TC)n with n between 1.9 and 2.0 (where T is temperature and T C is Curie point, both in ◦K). This implies that λS of titanomaghemite with x ≈ 0.55 and z ≈ 0.9 also varies in approximate proportion to (1− T TC)n with n near 1.9 or 2.0 on cooling to 120 ◦K (assuming that σ i remains constant on cooling). Our results support the hypothesis that coercivity (magnetic stability) is often magnetostrictively controlled by internal stresses in the highly oxidized titanomaghemites typical of oceanic basalts older than ca 10 Myr.We suggest that this hypothesis can be further tested by more extensive observation of whether cooling to 120 ◦K often causes HC J S of such basalts to vary in approximate proportion to (1 − T TC)n with n near 1.9 or 2.0

    Simultaneous pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PKPD) assessment of ampicillin and gentamicin in the treatment of neonatal sepsis.

    OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to simultaneously investigate the pharmacokinetics of ampicillin and gentamicin, currently the WHO standard of care for treating neonatal sepsis. METHODS: Pharmacokinetic data were collected in 59 neonates receiving ampicillin and gentamicin for suspected or proven sepsis in the NeoFosfo trial (NCT03453177). A panel of 23 clinical Escherichia coli isolates from neonates with sepsis, resistant to either ampicillin, gentamicin or both, were tested for susceptibility using chequerboards. Pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PKPD) modelling and simulations were used to compare single-agent (EUCAST MIC) and combination (chequerboard MIC) target attainment with standard dosing regimens. RESULTS: A model was established that simultaneously estimated parameters of a one-compartment ampicillin model and a two-compartment gentamicin model. A common clearance for both drugs was used (6.89 L/h/70 kg) relating to glomerular filtration (CLGFR), with an additional clearance term added for ampicillin (5.3 L/h/70 kg). Covariate modelling included a priori allometric weight and post-menstrual age scaling of clearance. Further covariate relationships on renal clearance were postnatal age and serum creatinine.Simulation-based PKPD assessments suggest good Gram-positive (MIC ≤ 0.25 mg/L) cover. However, less than one-quarter of neonates were predicted to receive efficacious coverage against Enterobacterales (MIC ≤ 2 mg/L). The benefit of the ampicillin/gentamicin combination was limited, with only 2/23 E. coli clinical strains showing FIC index < 0.5 (synergy) and most in the range 0.5-1 (suggesting additivity). Simulations showed that feasible dosing strategies would be insufficient to cover resistant strains. CONCLUSIONS: PKPD simulations showed ampicillin and gentamicin combination therapy was insufficient to cover Enterobacterales, suggesting the need for alternative empirical treatment options for neonatal sepsis
