The limitations of service members' constitutional rights

Thesis (M.A.) University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2003This thesis reviews the constitutional rights of service members and how they are limited by the military. These affected rights include the First Amendment's rights to free speech, religious exercise and the ability to petition the government for redress of grievances; the Fifth Amendment's due process clause; and the Sixth Amendment's right to a jury of one's peers. The discussion section of this thesis argues two justifications used by the military for limiting service members' rights. The first justification is in support of good order, discipline and morale. The second justification is in support of uniformity. The latter discussion also identifies the U.S. Supreme Court's treatment of the military as a separate community and how the military is guided by a different standard. To support the separate community justification the U.S. Supreme Court has deferred most of its rulings on the rights of service members back to military leaders. At the conclusion of the discussion section an application of previous U.S. Supreme Court cases and military court cases is used to anticipate the future of the military's body art policy

Study of the effectiveness of instant activities on student behavior in elementary physical education

The purpose of this research study was to assess how the use of instant activities as a physical education classroom warm-up impacts student behavior during the elementary physical education class period. The study examined whether or not the use of instant activities reduces the number of off-task student behaviors during a physical education class period. The research study focused on two fourth grade elementary classes that came to the physical education classroom twice a week for two months as part of this study. One class performed an instant activity every day before the start of the instructional period. The other class came right in and began the instructional period with no warm-up. The off-task behaviors that were observed included talking out of turn, not following the directions, and not facing the teacher during instructional time. What seems to be clear from previous research is that there is a positive correlation between physical activity and student behavior (Mahar et al., 2006). What has not yet been looked at is the relationship between instant activities and student behavior. Based on the results of this study the use of instant activities does not reduce the number of off-task student behaviors during a class period. The main take away from this research study was that classroom instruction has to be individualized for every class and within that class for every student. The next step of this research is to examine teacher decision making for ways to begin class in order to more effectively meet the needs of the class, and thus hopefully improve student behavior and academic learning time

Aerodynamic Reconstruction Applied to Parachute Test Vehicle Flight Data Analysis

    Get PDF
The aerodynamics, both static and dynamic, of a test vehicle are critical to determining the performance of the parachute cluster in a drop test and for conducting a successful test. The Capsule Parachute Assembly System (CPAS) project is conducting tests of NASA's Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) parachutes at the Army Yuma Proving Ground utilizing the Parachute Test Vehicle (PTV). The PTV shape is based on the MPCV, but the height has been reduced in order to fit within the C-17 aircraft for extraction. Therefore, the aerodynamics of the PTV are similar, but not the same as, the MPCV. A small series of wind tunnel tests and computational fluid dynamics cases were run to modify the MPCV aerodynamic database for the PTV, but aerodynamic reconstruction of the flights has proven an effective source for further improvements to the database. The acceleration and rotational rates measured during free flight, before parachute inflation but during deployment, were used to con rm vehicle static aerodynamics. A multibody simulation is utilized to reconstruct the parachute portions of the flight. Aerodynamic or parachute parameters are adjusted in the simulation until the prediction reasonably matches the flight trajectory. Knowledge of the static aerodynamics is critical in the CPAS project because the parachute riser load measurements are scaled based on forebody drag. PTV dynamic damping is critical because the vehicle has no reaction control system to maintain attitude - the vehicle dynamics must be understood and modeled correctly before flight. It will be shown here that aerodynamic reconstruction has successfully contributed to the CPAS project

[Verse 1] Dear face that holds so sweet a smile for me, Were you not mine how dark the world would be! I know no light above that could replace, Love’s radiant sunshine in your dear, dear face. [Refrain] Give me your smile, The love-light in your eyes, Life could not hold a fairer paradise! Give me the right to love you all the while, My world forever, The sunshine of your smile. [Verse 2] Shadows may fall upon the land and sea, Sunshine from all the world may hidden be, But I shall see no cloud across the sun; Your smile shall light my life, ‘till life is done! [Refrain

Thermally activated transitions in a system of two single domain ferromagnetic particles

Numerical simulations based on the stochastic Langevin equation are applied here to a system of two uniaxial single domain ferromagnetic particles with antiferromagnetic dipolar coupling. The hysteresis loops of a strongly coupled systems exhibit fully demagnetized, intermediate metastable configurations which separate the two fully saturated states. At small magnetostatic couplings, on the other hand, and at sufficiently weak damping, the intermediate metastable configuration becomes only partially demagnetized. This state cannot be associated with any single local minimum of the free energy function
