ISS Double-Gimbaled CMG Subsystem Simulation Using the Agile Development Method
This paper presents an evolutionary approach in simulating a cluster of 4 Control Moment Gyros (CMG) on the International Space Station (ISS) using a common sense approach (the agile development method) for concurrent mathematical modeling and simulation of the CMG subsystem. This simulation is part of Training systems for the 21st Century simulator which will provide training for crew members, instructors, and flight controllers. The basic idea of how the CMGs on the space station are used for its non-propulsive attitude control is briefly explained to set up the context for simulating a CMG subsystem. Next different reference frames and the detailed equations of motion (EOM) for multiple double-gimbal variable-speed control moment gyroscopes (DGVs) are presented. Fixing some of the terms in the EOM becomes the special case EOM for ISS's double-gimbaled fixed speed CMGs. CMG simulation development using the agile development method is presented in which customer's requirements and solutions evolve through iterative analysis, design, coding, unit testing and acceptance testing. At the end of the iteration a set of features implemented in that iteration are demonstrated to the flight controllers thus creating a short feedback loop and helping in creating adaptive development cycles. The unified modeling language (UML) tool is used in illustrating the user stories, class designs and sequence diagrams. This incremental development approach of mathematical modeling and simulating the CMG subsystem involved the development team and the customer early on, thus improving the quality of the working CMG system in each iteration and helping the team to accurately predict the cost, schedule and delivery of the software
Simulation of an Electromechanical Spin Motor System of a Control Moment Gyroscope
A two-phase brushless DC motor (BDCM) with pulse-width modulated (PWM) voltage drive is simulated to control the flywheel speed of a control moment gyroscope (CMG). An overview of a double-gimballed control moment gyroscope (DGCMG) assembly is presented along with the CMG torque effects on the spacecraft. The operating principles of a two-phase brushless DC motor are presented and the system's electro-mechanical equations of motion are developed for the root-mean-square (RMS) currents and wheel speed. It is shown that the system is an extremely "stiff" set of first-order equations for which an implicit Euler integrator is required for a stable solution. An adaptive proportional voltage controller is presented which adjusts the PWM voltages depending on several control modes for speed, current, and torque. The simulation results illustrate the interaction between the electrical system and the load dynamics and how these influence the overall performance of the system. As will be shown, the CMG spin motor model can directly provide electrical power use and thermal power output to spacecraft subsystems for effective (average) calculations of CMG power consumption

Two-Craft Coulomb Formation Study about Circular Orbits and Libration Points
This dissertation investigates the dynamics and control of a two-craft Coulomb formation in circular orbits and at libration points; it addresses relative equilibria, stability and optimal reconfigurations of such formations. The relative equilibria of a two-craft tether formation connected by line-of-sight elastic forces moving in circular orbits and at libration points are investigated. In circular Earth orbits and Earth-Moon libration points, the radial, along-track, and orbit normal great circle equilibria conditions are found. An example of modeling the tether force using Coulomb force is discussed. Furthermore, the non-great-circle equilibria conditions for a two-spacecraft tether structure in circular Earth orbit and at collinear libration points are developed. Then the linearized dynamics and stability analysis of a 2-craft Coulomb formation at Earth- Moon libration points are studied. For orbit-radial equilibrium, Coulomb forces control the relative distance between the two satellites. The gravity gradient torques on the formation due to the two planets help stabilize the formation. Similar analysis is performed for alongtrack and orbit-normal relative equilibrium configurations. Where necessary, the craft use a hybrid thrusting-electrostatic actuation system. The two-craft dynamics at the libration points provide a general framework with circular Earth orbit dynamics forming a special case. In the presence of differential solar drag perturbations, a Lyapunov feedback controller is designed to stabilize a radial equilibrium, two-craft Coulomb formation at collinear libration points. The second part of the thesis investigates optimal reconfigurations of two-craft Coulomb formations in circular Earth orbits by applying nonlinear optimal control techniques. The objective of these reconfigurations is to maneuver the two-craft formation between two charged equilibria configurations. The reconfiguration of spacecraft is posed as an optimization problem using the calculus of variations approach. The optimality criteria are minimum time, minimum acceleration of the separation distance, minimum Coulomb and electric propulsion fuel usage, and minimum electrical power consumption. The continuous time problem is discretized using a pseudospectral method, and the resulting finite dimensional problem is solved using a sequential quadratic programming algorithm. The software package, DIDO, implements this approach. This second part illustrates how pseudospectral methods significantly simplify the solution-finding process
Antenatally diagnosed alobar holoprosencephaly: A report of two cases
Holoprosencephaly is a complex developmental abnormality of the brain arising from the failure of cleavage of the prosencephalon. The condition termed “holoprosencephaly” includes cyclopia, cebocephaly, ethmocephaly, and median cleft. We present two cases of antenatally diagnosed alobar holoprosencephaly with multiple associations, which were confirmed after termination of pregnancy. One of them had a proboscis and a single midline eye. The other had multiple facial abnormalities such as hypotelorism, median cleft lip and palate, and preauricular skin tag
