    Free energy and vibrational entropy difference between ordered and disordered Ni3Al

    We have calculated free energy and vibrational entropy differences in Ni3Al between its equilibrium ordered structure and a disordered fcc solid solution. The free energy and entropy differences were calculated using the method of adiabatic switching in a molecular-dynamics formalism. The path chosen for the free-energy calculations directly connects the disordered with the ordered state. The atomic interactions are described by embedded-atom-method potentials. We find that the vibrational entropy difference increases with temperature from 0.14kB/atom at 300 K to 0.22kB/atom at 1200 K. We have calculated the density of states (DOS) of the disordered phase from the Fourier transform of the velocity-velocity autocorrelation function. The disordered DOS looks more like a broadened version of the ordered DOS. Analysis of the partial density of states shows that the Al atoms vibrations are most affected by the compositional disorder. The phonon partial spectral intensities along the 〈100〉 direction show that the vibrational spectrum of the disordered phase contains intensities at optical mode frequencies of the ordered alloy. We find that the volume difference between the ordered and disordered phases plays the most crucial role in the magnitude of the vibrational entropy difference. If the lattice constant of the two phases is set to the same value, the vibrational entropy difference decreases to zero

    La brotación y la floración del kiwi en función de las temperaturas invierno - primaverales de la región central de Córdoba

    p.183-188Se analizaron la brotación y floración del kiwi en relación a la acumulación de unidades Richardson en dos localidades de la región central de Córdoba durante las campañas agrícolas 1990-91 y 1991-92. Se observaron diferencias significativas entre los cultivares Hayward y M- 54 en cuanto a las fechas de ocurrencia de la brotación. El porcentaje de yemas brotadas estuvo relacionado con el nivel del enfriamiento invernal. Asimismo, la duración de la floración, en particular de las flores femeninas, se reduce al producirse una mayor acumulación de unidades de Richardson. Las condiciones meteorológicas registradas en las localidades estudiadas durante el período de la dormición invernal fueron propicias para el posterior desarrollo de la brotación y floración del kiwi

    Shock compression and spallation of single crystal tantalum

    We present molecular dynamics simulations of shock-induced plasticity and spall damage in single crystal Ta described by a recently developed embedded-atom-method (EAM) potential and a volumedependent qEAM potential. We use impact or Hugoniotstat simulations to investigate the Hugoniots, deformation and spallation. Both EAM and qEAM are accurate in predicting, e.g., the Hugoniots and γ - surfaces. Deformation and spall damage are anisotropic for Ta single crystals. Our preliminary results show that twinning is dominant for [100] and [110] shock loading, and dislocation, for [111]. Spallation initiates with void nucleation at defective sites from remnant compressional deformation or tensile plasticity. Spall strength decreases with increasing shock strength, while its rate dependence remains to be explored

    Large-scale molecular dynamics simulations of shock induced plasticity in tantalum single crystals

    We report on large-scale non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations of shock wave compression in Ta single crystals. The atomic interactions are modeled via a recently developed and optimized embedded-atom method (EAM) potential for Ta, which reproduces the equation of state up to 200 GPa. We examined the elastic-plastic transition and shock wave structure for wave propagation along the low index directions: (100), (110) and (111). Shock waves along (100) and (111) exhibit an elastic precursor followed by a plastic wave for particle velocities below 1.1 km/s for (100) and 1.4 km/s for (111). The nature of the plastic deformation along (110) is dominated by twinning for pressures above 41 GPa

    Kink-antikink interactions in the double sine-Gordon equation and the problem of resonance frequencies

    We studied the kink-antikink collision process for the "double sine-Gordon" (DSG) equation in 1+1 dimensions at different values of the potential parameter R>0R>0. For small values of RR we discuss the problem of resonance frequencies. We give qualitative explanation of the frequency shift in comparison with the frequency of the discrete level in the potential well of isolated kink.     The book The Mothers’ Poems, combining the verses of Gabriela Mistral and drawings of the artist Andre Racz, has been reissued by Ediciones Radio Universidad de Chile with the support of the National Council for Culture and the Arts (CNCA) of the Government of Chile in 2015. This is the third edition of the poems and the second in which Racz’s images are included, since it was published for first time in 1950. The theme of motherhood, women, fears and strengths are masterfully described by a woman who could never conceive but devotedly loved children and empathized with women. With such delivery, with his strokes Racz described the delicate and sensitive world of the pregnant woman.     Assessment of 50%-Propagation-Delay for Cascaded PCB Non-Linear Interconnect Lines for the High-Rate Signal Integrity Analysis

    This paper presents an enlarged study about the 50-% propagation-time assessment of cascaded transmission lines (TLs). First and foremost, the accurate modeling and measurement technique of signal integrity (SI) for high-rate microelectronic interconnection is recalled. This model is based on the reduced transfer function extracted from the electromagnetic (EM) behavior of the interconnect line RLCG-parameters. So, the transfer function established takes into account both the frequency dispersion effects and the different propagation modes. In addition, the transfer function includes also the load and source impedance effects. Then, the SI analysis is proposed for high-speed digital signals through the developed model. To validate the model understudy, a prototype of microstrip interconnection with w = 500 µm and length d = 33 mm was designed, simulated, fabricated and tested. Then, comparisons between the frequency and time domain results from the model and from measurements are performed. As expected, good agreement between the S-parameters form measurements and the model proposed is obtained from DC to 8 GHz. Furthermore, a de-embedding method enabling to cancel out the connectors and the probe effects are also presented. In addition, an innovative time-domain characterization is proposed in order to validate the concept with a 2.38 Gbit/s-input data signal. Afterwards, the 50-% propagation-time assessment problem is clearly exposed. Consequently an extracting theory of this propagation-time with first order RC-circuits is presented. Finally, to show the relevance of this calculation, propagation-time simulations and an application to signal integrity issues are offered

    Investigation of correlations between clinical signs and pathological findings in cats and dogs with inflammatory bowel disease

    This paper compares the correlation between the clinical signs and the histopathological observations of the entire intestine in cats and dogs with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). To perform this study, hospital records of 53 dogs and 20 cats of different sex, ages, and breed diagnosed with IBD following the histopathological criteria of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) were evaluated. The results obtained in this study did show correlations between some clinical signs and the histopathological assessment of dogs and cats with IBD. Therefore, a slight association between diarrhea and lacteal dilation in the small bowel, and diarrhea and desquamation in the large bowel of dogs with IBD was seen, but no other associations were found between the rest of the lesions and symptoms. In contrast, cats only showed a correlation between anorexia with villous stunting and villous epithelial injury, without correspondence among other clinical signs and lesions. The results of this study propose that the evaluation of IBD can be complicated, especially with the use of retrospective records of archived intestinal biopsies and subjective clinical and histopathologic decisions

    Relaxation and reconstruction on (111) surfaces of Au, Pt, and Cu

    We have theoretically studied the stability and reconstruction of (111) surfaces of Au, Pt, and Cu. We have calculated the surface energy, surface stress, interatomic force constants, and other relevant quantities by ab initio electronic structure calculations using the density functional theory (DFT), in a slab geometry with periodic boundary conditions. We have estimated the stability towards a quasi-one-dimensional reconstruction by using the calculated quantities as parameters in a one-dimensional Frenkel-Kontorova model. On all surfaces we have found an intrinsic tensile stress. This stress is large enough on Au and Pt surfaces to lead to a reconstruction in which a denser surface layer is formed, in agreement with experiment. The experimentally observed differences between the dense reconstruction pattern on Au(111) and a sparse structure of stripes on Pt(111) are attributed to the details of the interaction potential between the first layer of atoms and the substrate.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Physical Review

    Data report: composite depth scale and splice revision for IODP Site U1488 (Expedition 363 Western Pacific Warm Pool) using XRF core scanning data and core images

    The Western Pacific Warm Pool (WPWP) is a major source of heat and moisture to the atmosphere. Small perturbations in WPWP sea-surface temperatures greatly influence local Hadley and Walker cells, thereby affecting global atmospheric circulation patterns. International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 363 sought to document the regional expression and driving mechanisms of WPWP climate variability during the Neogene on millennial, orbital, and geological timescales. Located in the heart of the WPWP, IODP Site U1488 (02°02.59ʹN, 141°45.29ʹE) was drilled in 2604 m water depth on the southern part of the Eauripik Rise in the Caroline Basin. At Site U1488, a continuous shipboard composite stratigraphic section from 0 to ~331 m core composite depth below seafloor (CCSF) was compiled using high-resolution shipboard physical property data from three holes. This section comprises upper Miocene to recent foraminifer-rich nannofossil ooze and foraminifer-nannofossil ooze, making Site U1488 ideally suited to reconstruct the paleoceanographic history of the central WPWP region. However, the high carbonate content (>90% below ~180 m CCSF) of Site U1488 sediments means that the physical property data sets commonly used for splice construction (gamma ray attenuation bulk density, magnetic susceptibility, and natural gamma radiation) were too low amplitude to provide robust constraints on splice tie points below 120 m CCSF. As a result, P-wave data, which are relatively untested as a correlation tool, became critical for correlating between holes. Here, we verify and extend the Site U1488 shipboard composite splice using high-resolution (2 cm) X-ray fluorescence Ba/Sr core scanning data combined with composite linescan images. Overall, using these data at Site U1488 resulted in revised core offsets that differ by up to 0.84 m relative to the shipboard core offsets and a composite depth scale down to 329.33 m revised CCSF. The revised splice will allow optimization of postexpedition research and ensure that high-resolution studies of Site U1488 are conducted on a continuous stratigraphic section
