    A review on the genus Calophyllum (Clusiaceae): a potential medicinal tree species

    Calophyllum is the genus of evergreen tropical flowering plants in the Clusiaceae family. They are predominantly located in Asia with some of its genus distributed in the Pacific Islands, Americas, Australasia and Africa. Plants of the genus are well known for their chemical properties with lots of secondary metabolites such as triterpenes, flavonoids, coumarins and xanthones. Compounds from Calophyllum have been reported to have cytoprotective, anti-HIV, anti-secretory, cytotoxic, antinociceptive, molluscicidal and antimicrobial properties. Some of the plants in Calophyllum are used in folk medicine to treat conditions like peptic ulcers, tumours, inflammation, infections and pain. Calophyllum genus is important with respect to their ecological as well as their medicinal properties. But in India, some species located in Western Ghats are in vulnerable stage. Even so, there is no remarkable studies carried out about this genus. So, for a sustainable environment, we should focus on the conservation, restoration and rehabilitation of the genus that makes huge differences in their population.     Oxide Nanostructures: Characterizations And Optical Bandgap Evaluations Of Cobalt-Manganese And Nickel-Manganese At Different Temperatures

    Cobalt-Manganese and Nickel-Manganese oxide (CoMnO and NiMnO) nanoparticles were prepared by chemical co-precipitation method by decomposition of their respective metal sulfides and sodium carbonate using ethylene diamene tetra acetic acid as the capping agent. The samples were heated at 400, 600 and 800 °C. The average particle sizes were determined from the X-ray line broadening. The diffractograms were compared with JCPDS data to identify the crystallographic phase and cubic structure of the particles. The samples were characterized by XRD, FTIR and UV analyses. The internal elastic micro strains were calculated and it was seen that as the particle size increases strain decreases. The FTIR studies have been used to confirm the metal oxide formation. The chemical compositions of the samples were verified using EDX spectra. The surface morphologies of the samples were studied from the SEM images. The absorption spectra of the materials in the UV-Vis-NIR range were recorded. From the analysis of the absorption spectra, the direct band gaps of the materials were calculated.     Ion transport regulation by P2Y receptors, protein kinase C and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase within the semicircular canal duct epithelium

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The ionic composition of the luminal fluid in the vestibular labyrinth is maintained within tight limits by the many types of epithelial cells bounding the lumen. Regulatory mechanisms include systemic, paracrine and autocrine hormones along with their associated intracellular signal pathways. The epithelium lining the semicircular canal duct (SCCD) is a tissue that is known to absorb sodium and calcium and to secrete chloride.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>Transport function was assessed by measurements of short circuit current (<it>I</it><sub><it>sc</it></sub>) and gene transcript expression was evaluated by microarray. Neither ATP nor UTP (100 microM) on the apical side of the epithelium had any effect on <it>I</it><sub><it>sc</it></sub>. By contrast, basolateral ATP transiently increased <it>I</it><sub><it>sc </it></sub>and transepithelial resistance dropped significantly after basolateral ATP and UTP. P2Y2 was the sole UTP-sensitive purinergic receptor expressed. <it>I</it><sub><it>sc </it></sub>was reduced by 42%, 50% and 63% after knockdown of α-ENaC, stimulation of PKC and inhibition of PI3-K, while the latter two increased the transepithelial resistance. PKCdelta, PKCgamma and PI3-K were found to be expressed.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These observations demonstrate that ion transport by the SCCD is regulated by P2Y2 purinergic receptors on the basolateral membrane that may respond to systemic or local agonists, such as ATP and/or UTP. The sodium absorption from endolymph mediated by ENaC in SCCD is regulated by signal pathways that include the kinases PKC and PI3-K. These three newly-identified regulatory components may prove to be valuable drug targets in the control of pathologic vestibular conditions involving dysfunction of transport homeostasis in the ear, such as Meniere's disease.</p

    Microbial decomposition of the floating weed Salvinia molesta Aublet in Cochin backwaters

    From the live and decomposing S. molesta 13 strains of bacteria were isolated and the growth promoting effect of the weed extract in various concentrations in 5 selected strains of bacteria and a mixed culture was studied. Turbidity measurements gave maximum percentaae transmission in 5 % extract. Dry weight loss of dried weed in the laboratory was 20 and 25 % after to and 25 days of incubation respectively. Yield efficiency of 3 bacterial strains calculated for 48 hr was 20%. The results suggest the potential value of this primary source of organic material in the food web of Cocbin backwater

    Short-period intensity oscillations in the solar corona observed during the total solar eclipse of 26 february 1998

    Encouraged by the detection of high-frequency, low-amplitude continuum intensity oscillations in the solar corona during the total solar eclipse of 1995, we designed and fabricated a six-channel photometer incorporating low-noise Hamamatsu R647 photomultipliers. Fast photometry at five different locations in the solar corona was performed at Don Bosco Mission, Venezuela during the total solar eclipse of 26 February 1998. Three interference filters with passbands of about 150Å and centered around 4700, 4900, and 5000Å were used. The photometric data were recorded at a rate of 20 Hz in three channels and 50 Hz in the remaining three channels. The power spectrum analysis of one of the channels that recorded appreciable counts indicates the existence of intensity oscillations in the frequency range 0.01-0.2 Hz. A least-squares analysis yields 90.1, 25.2, and 6.9 s periods for the three prominent components which have amplitudes in the range 0.5-3.5% of the coronal brightness. These periods and their amplitudes are similar to those detected in the coronal intensity oscillations during the 1995 eclipse
