    Magnetic field generation by pointwise zero-helicity three-dimensional steady flow of incompressible electrically conducting fluid

    We introduce six families of three-dimensional space-periodic steady solenoidal flows, whose kinetic helicity density is zero at any point. Four families are analytically defined. Flows in four families have zero helicity spectrum. Sample flows from five families are used to demonstrate numerically that neither zero kinetic helicity density, nor zero helicity spectrum prohibit generation of large-scale magnetic field by the two most prominent dynamo mechanisms: the magnetic α\alpha-effect and negative eddy diffusivity. Our computations also attest that such flows often generate small-scale field for sufficiently small magnetic molecular diffusivity. These findings indicate that kinetic helicity and helicity spectrum are not the quantities controlling the dynamo properties of a flow regardless of whether scale separation is present or not.Comment: 37 pages, 11 figures, 54 reference

    Trends of the major porin gene (ompF) evolution

    OmpF is one of the major general porins of Enterobacteriaceae that belongs to the first line of bacterial defense and interactions with the biotic as well as abiotic environments. Porins are surface exposed and their structures strongly reflect the history of multiple interactions with the environmental challenges. Unfortunately, little is known on diversity of porin genes of Enterobacteriaceae and the genus Yersinia especially. We analyzed the sequences of the ompF gene from 73 Yersinia strains covering 14 known species. The phylogenetic analysis placed most of the Yersinia strains in the same line assigned by 16S rDNA-gyrB tree. Very high congruence in the tree topologies was observed for Y. enterocolitica, Y. kristensenii, Y. ruckeri, indicating that intragenic recombination in these species had no effect on the ompF gene. A significant level of intra- and interspecies recombination was found for Y. aleksiciae, Y. intermedia and Y. mollaretii. Our analysis shows that the ompF gene of Yersinia has evolved with nonrandom mutational rate under purifying selection. However, several surface loops in the OmpF porin contain positively selected sites, which very likely reflect adaptive diversification Yersinia to their ecological niches. To our knowledge, this is a first investigation of diversity of the porin gene covering the whole genus of the family Enterobacteriaceae. This study demonstrates that recombination and positive selection both contribute to evolution of ompF, but the relative contribution of these evolutionary forces are different among Yersinia species

    Assimilation of solids during ascent of magmas from the Bartoy Field of the Baikal Region, Siberia

    Most investigators ascribe mare basalt magma genesis to partial melting at depths of approximately 130 to greater than 400 km within the cumulate pile deposited from a lunar magma ocean. Mare basalts share with mid-ocean ridge basalts the characteristic of relative depletion in LREE and other incompatible trace elements that arises from melting within 'used' mantle, from which crust-forming elements have already been separated. Some mare basalt types do not show the classical, La-Nd depleted mare basalt REE distributions; however, some types are isotopically heterogeneous. These differences have been ascribed to assimilation, mainly AFC-style, of KREEPy highland material overlying the source region. Might such assimilation occur during magma ascent through the KREEPy material? To gain information from a terrestrial setting on possible assimilation during ascent, we have studied a suite of Quaternary nepheline-hawalites and nepheline-mugearites from the Bartoy cinder cone complex of the Baikal Rift, Siberia. The Bartoy magmas originated from greater than 80 km deep, and erupted through thick Archean crust. We find evidence for assimilation of approximately 31 wt. percent xenocrysts of garnet, aluminous clinopyroxene, kaersutite, and olivine, all presumably from the basalt source region, but no appreciable assimilation of overlying crust, consistent with isotopic constraints. Magmatic superheat made available by rapid ascent and decomposition accounts adequately for the energy of assimilation; no accompanying fractional crystallization is required or evident

    © Serials Publications.The article discusses the causes and conditions of juvenile crime in Russia on the basis of analysis of scientific and creative approaches to highlight social and personal microcredit determinants. In the process of writing were used research methods: analysis, synthesis, statistics, comparison and others. The author notes a direct relationship between the causes and conditions conducive to the Commission of crimes minors and insufficient efficiency of measures aimed at neutralization and subsequent elimination. Attention is drawn that the problem of the causes and conditions conducive to the Commission of juvenile crime in Russia involves a comprehensive and systematic scientific approach in their research, which indicates that they are not only criminological and criminal law, and more socio-economic and cultural-educational aspects. Therefore, in order to prevent juvenile crime the necessary socio-economic and cultural-educational factors on the neutralization and elimination of causes and conditions conducive to the Commission of crimes of minors, consistent and efficient operation of all government and law enforcement agencies to prevent, identify and prosecute perpetrators, as well as the constructive activities of the state bodies, public organizations and other institutions of civil society in shaping the law-abiding younger generation of Russian citizens

    The GeneNet system is designed for collection and analysis of the data on gene and metabolic networks, signal transduction pathways and kinetic characteristics of elementary processes. In the past 2 years, the GeneNet structure was considerably improved: (i) the current version of the database is now implemented using ORACLE9i; (ii) the capacities to describe the structure of the protein complexes and the interactions between the units are increased; (iii) two tables with kinetic constants and more detailed descriptions of certain reactions were added; and (iv) a module for kinetic modeling was supplemented. The current SRS release of the GeneNet database contains 37 graphical maps of gene networks, as well as descriptions of 1766 proteins, 1006 genes, 241 small molecules and 3254 relationships between gene network units, and 552 kinetic constants. Information distributed between 16 interlinked tables was obtained by annotating 1980 journal publications.     Isolation, characterization and molecular cloning of Duplex-Specific Nuclease from the hepatopancreas of the Kamchatka crab

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Nucleases, which are key components of biologically diverse processes such as DNA replication, repair and recombination, antiviral defense, apoptosis and digestion, have revolutionized the field of molecular biology. Indeed many standard molecular strategies, including molecular cloning, studies of DNA-protein interactions, and analysis of nucleic acid structures, would be virtually impossible without these versatile enzymes. The discovery of nucleases with unique properties has often served as the basis for the development of modern molecular biology methods. Thus, the search for novel nucleases with potentially exploitable functions remains an important scientific undertaking.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Using degenerative primers and the rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) procedure, we cloned the Duplex-Specific Nuclease (DSN) gene from the hepatopancreas of the Kamchatka crab and determined its full primary structure. We also developed an effective method for purifying functional DSN from the crab hepatopancreas. The isolated enzyme was highly thermostable, exhibited a broad pH optimum (5.5 – 7.5) and required divalent cations for activity, with manganese and cobalt being especially effective. The enzyme was highly specific, cleaving double-stranded DNA or DNA in DNA-RNA hybrids, but not single-stranded DNA or single- or double-stranded RNA. Moreover, only DNA duplexes containing at least 9 base pairs were effectively cleaved by DSN; shorter DNA duplexes were left intact.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We describe a new DSN from Kamchatka crab hepatopancreas, determining its primary structure and developing a preparative method for its purification. We found that DSN had unique substrate specificity, cleaving only DNA duplexes longer than 8 base pairs, or DNA in DNA-RNA hybrids. Interestingly, the DSN primary structure is homologous to well-known Serratia-like non-specific nucleases structures, but the properties of DSN are distinct. The unique substrate specificity of DSN should prove valuable in certain molecular biology applications.</p
