N=3 Warped Compactifications
Orientifolds with three-form flux provide some of the simplest string
examples of warped compactification. In this paper we show that some models of
this type have the unusual feature of D=4, N=3 spacetime supersymmetry. We
discuss their construction and low energy physics. Although the local form of
the moduli space is fully determined by supersymmetry, to find its global form

Non-relativistic limit of Randall-Sundrum model: solutions, applications and constraints
In the Randall-Sundrum model with one brane, we found the approximate and
exact solutions for gravitational potentials and accelerations of test bodies
in these potentials for different geometrical configurations. We applied these
formulas for calculation of the gravitational interaction between two spheres
and found the approximate and exact expressions for the relative force
corrections to the Newton's gravitational force. We demonstrated that the
difference between relative force corrections for the approximate and exact
cases increases with the parameter (for the fixed distance between
centers of the spheres). On the other hand, this difference increases with
decreasing of the distance between the centers of the spheres (for the fixed
curvature scale parameter ). We got the upper limit for the curvature scale
parameter m. For these values of , the difference

U(1) Gauge Field of the Kaluza-Klein Theory in the Presence of Branes
We investigate the zero mode dimensional reduction of the Kaluza-Klein
unifications in the presence of a single brane in the infinite extra dimension.
We treat the brane as fixed, not a dynamical object, and do not require the
orbifold symmetry. It seems that, contrary to the standard Kaluza-Klein models,
the 4D effective action is no longer invariant under the U(1) gauge
transformations due to the explicit breaking of isometries in the extra
dimension by the brane. Surprisingly, however, the linearized perturbation
analysis around the RS vacuum shows that the Kaluza-Klein gauge field does
possess the U(1) gauge symmetry at the linear level. In addition, the
graviscalar also behaves differently from the 4D point of view. Some physical

Male frequent attenders of general practice and their help seeking preferences
Background: Low rates of health service usage by men are commonly linked to masculine values and traditional male gender roles. However, not all men conform to these stereotypical notions of masculinity, with some men choosing to attend health services on a frequent basis, for a variety of different reasons. This study draws upon the accounts of male frequent attenders of the General Practitioner's (GP) surgery, examining their help-seeking preferences and their reasons for choosing services within general practice over other sources of support. Methods: The study extends thematic analysis of interview data from the Self Care in Primary Care study (SCinPC), a large scale multi-method evaluation study of a self care programme delivered to frequent attenders of general practice. Data were collected from 34 semi-structured interviews conducted with men prior to their exposure to the intervention. Results: The ages of interviewed men ranged from 16 to 72 years, and 91% of the sample (n= 31) stated that they had a current health condition. The thematic analysis exposed diverse perspectives within male help-seeking preferences and the decision-making behind men's choice of services. The study also draws attention to the large variation in men's knowledge of available health services, particularly alternatives to general practice. Furthermore, the data revealed some men's lack of confidence in existing alternatives to general practice. Conclusions: The study highlights the complex nature of male help-seeking preferences, and provides evidence that there should be no 'one size fits all' approach to male service provision. It also provides impetus for conducting further studies into this under researched area of interest. © 2011 WPMH GmbH
Individual-Based Model Framework to Assess Population Consequences of Polychlorinated Biphenyl Exposure in Bottlenose Dolphins
Marine mammals are susceptible to the effects of anthropogenic contaminants. Here we examine the effect of different polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) accumulation scenarios on potential population growth rates using, as an example, data obtained for the population of bottlenose dolphins from Sarasota Bay, Florida. To achieve this goal, we developed an individual-based model framework that simulates the accumulation of PCBs in the population and modifies first-year calf survival based on maternal blubber PCB levels. In our example the current estimated annual PCB accumulation rate for the Sarasota Bay dolphin population might be depressing the potential population growth rate. However, our predictions are limited both by model naivety and parameter uncertainty. We emphasize the need for more data collection on the relationship between maternal blubber PCB levels and calf survivorship, the annual accumulation of PCBs in the blubber of females, and the transfer of PCBs to the calf through the placenta and during lactation. Such data require continued efforts directed toward long-term studies of known individuals in wild and semi-wild populations
Large rivers and orogens: the evolution of the Yarlung Tsangpo–Irrawaddy system and the eastern Himalayan syntaxis
The eastern Himalayan syntaxis has experienced some of the highest rates of deformation and erosion in the orogen during the Late Cenozoic, and the Yarlung Tsangpo, Brahmaputra, Irrawaddy, Salween, and Mekong rivers are the key erosional systems in that region. The Yarlung Tsangpo drains southern Tibet and the deep Siang River gorge through the eastern Himalayan syntaxis before joining the Brahmaputra in northeastern India. It has been proposed that the Yarlung Tsangpo drained into other large rivers of southern Asia, such as the Irrawaddy, Salween and Red River. We have used uranium/lead dating and hafnium measurements of detrital zircons from Cenozoic sedimentary deposits in Central Myanmar to demonstrate that the Yarlung Tsangpo formerly drained into the Irrawaddy River in Myanmar through the eastern syntaxis, and that this ancient river system was established by (at least) the Middle–Late Eocene. The Yarlung Tsangpo–Irrawaddy river disconnected in the Early Miocene driven by increased deformation in the eastern syntaxis and headward erosion by tributaries of the Brahmaputra. Our results highlight the significance of the sedimentary record of large orogen-parallel rivers and provide key chronological constraints on landscape evolution during the Early Miocene phase of the Himalayan orogeny
On the Initial Conditions for Brane Inflation
String theory gives rise to various mechanisms to generate primordial
inflation, of which ``brane inflation'' is one of the most widely considered.
In this scenario, inflation takes place while two branes are approaching each
other, and the modulus field representing the separation between the branes
plays the role of the inflaton field. We study the phase space of initial
conditions which can lead to a sufficiently long period of cosmological
inflation, and find that taking into account the possibility of nonvanishing
initial momentum can significantly change the degree of fine tuning of the

Tensor-scalar gravity and binary-pulsar experiments
Some recently discovered nonperturbative strong-field effects in
tensor-scalar theories of gravitation are interpreted as a scalar analog of
ferromagnetism: "spontaneous scalarization". This phenomenon leads to very
significant deviations from general relativity in conditions involving strong
gravitational fields, notably binary-pulsar experiments. Contrary to
solar-system experiments, these deviations do not necessarily vanish when the
weak-field scalar coupling tends to zero. We compute the scalar "form factors"
measuring these deviations, and notably a parameter entering the pulsar timing
observable gamma through scalar-field-induced variations of the inertia moment
of the pulsar. An exploratory investigation of the confrontation between
tensor-scalar theories and binary-pulsar experiments shows that nonperturbative
scalar field effects are already very tightly constrained by published data on
three binary-pulsar systems. We contrast the probing power of pulsar
experiments with that of solar-system ones by plotting the regions they exclude

Looking Beyond Inflationary Cosmology
In spite of the phenomenological successes of the inflationary universe
scenario, the current realizations of inflation making use of scalar fields
lead to serious conceptual problems which are reviewed in this lecture. String
theory may provide an avenue towards addressing these problems. One particular
approach to combining string theory and cosmology is String Gas Cosmology. The

Localization of gravity in brane world with arbitrary extra dimensions
We study the induced 4-dimensional linearized Einstein field equations in an
m-dimensional bulk space by means of a confining potential. It is shown that in
this approach the mass of graviton is quantized. The cosmological constant
problem is also addressed within the context of this approach. We show that the
difference between the values of the cosmological constant in particle physics
and cosmology stems from our measurements in two different scales, small and
