Radius-dependent gauge unification in AdS5
We examine the relation of the 4-dimensional low energy coupling of bulk
gauge boson in a slice of AdS5 to the 5-dimensional fundamental couplings as a
function of the orbifold radius R. This allows us to address the gauge coupling
unification in AdS5 by means of the radius running as well as the conventional
momentum running. We then compute the radius dependence of 1-loop low energy
couplings in generic AdS5 theory with 4-dimensional supersymmetry, and discuss
the low energy predictions when the 5-dimensional couplings are assumed to be
unified.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, revtex, v3: analysis was generalized to

Supersymmetry Breaking in Warped Geometry
We examine the soft supersymmetry breaking parameters in supersymmetric
theories on a slice of AdS_5 which generate the hierarchical Yukawa couplings
by dynamically localizing the bulk matter fields in extra dimension. Such
models can be regarded as the AdS dual of the recently studied 4-dimensional
models which contain a supersymmetric CFT to generate the hierarchical Yukawa
couplings. In such models, if supersymmetry breaking is mediated by the bulk
radion superfield and/or some brane chiral superfields, potentially dangerous
flavor-violating soft parameters can be naturally suppressed, thereby avoiding
the SUSY flavor problem. We present some models of radion-dominated
supersymmetry breaking which yield a highly predictive form of soft parameters
in this framework.Comment: 17 pages, no figures, uses JHEP clas
One loop gauge couplings in AdS5
We calculate the full 1-loop corrections to the low energy coupling of bulk
gauge boson in a slice of AdS5 which are induced by generic 5-dimensional
scalar, Dirac fermion, and vector fields with arbitrary Z_2 times Z_2' orbifold
boundary conditions. In supersymmetric limit, our results correctly reproduce
the results obtained by an independent method based on 4-dimensional effective
supergravity. This provides a nontrivial check of our results and assures the
regularization scheme-independence of the results.Comment: RevTeX, 22 pages, 2 figures, some typos corrected and notations

Elemental Abundances in the X-Ray Gas of Early-Type Galaxies with XMM and Chandra Observations
The source of hot gas in elliptical galaxies is thought to be due to stellar
mass loss, with contributions from supernova events and possibly from infall
from a surrounding environment. This picture predicts supersolar values for the
metallicity of the gas toward the inner part of the galaxy, which can be tested
by measuring the gas phase abundances. We use high-quality data for 10 nearby
early-type galaxy from XMM-Newton, featuring both the EPIC and the Reflection
Grating Spectrometer, where the strongest emission lines are detected with
little blending; some Chandra data are also used. We find excellent consistency
in the elemental abundances between the different XMM instruments and good
consistency with Chandra. Differences in abundances with aperture size and
model complexity are examined, but large differences rarely occur. For a
two-temperature thermal model plus a point source contribution, the median Fe
and O abundances are 0.86 and 0.44 of the Solar value, while Si and Mg
abundances are similar to that for Fe. This is similar to stellar abundances
for these galaxies but supernovae were expected to enhance the gas phase
abundances considerably, which is not observed.Comment: 35 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Astrophysical

Gauge Threshold Corrections in Warped Geometry
We discuss the Kaluza-Klein threshold correction to low energy gauge
couplings in theories with warped extra-dimension, which might be crucial for
the gauge coupling unification when the warping is sizable. Explicit
expressions of one-loop thresholds are derived for generic 5D gauge theory on a
slice of AdS_5, where some of the bulk gauge symmetries are broken by orbifold
boundary conditions and/or by bulk Higgs vacuum values. Effects of the mass
mixing between the bulk fields with different orbifold parities are included as
such mixing is required in some class of realistic warped unification models.Comment: 33 pages, 1 figure, 6 tables, invited contribution to New Journal of

Gauge coupling renormalization in orbifold field theories
We investigate the gauge coupling renormalization in orbifold field theories
preserving 4-dimensional N=1 supersymmetry in the framework of 4-dimensional
effective supergravity. As a concrete example, we consider the 5-dimensional
Super-Yang-Mills theory on a slice of AdS_5. In our approach, one-loop gauge
couplings can be determined by the loop-induced axion couplings and the tree
level properties of 4-dimensional effective supergravity which are much easier
to be computed.Comment: 18 pages, JHEP style; 1-loop corrections to gauge kinetic functions

Brane inflation in tachyonic and non-tachyonic type 0B string theories
We consider the motion of the brane universe moving in a background bulk
space of tachyonic and non-tachyonic type 0B string theory. The effective
densities are calculated for both cases and they show different power law
behavior. Brane inflation for non-tachyonic type 0B background has the same
power law behavior as that for type IIB background. The brane inflation under
tachyonic background is less divergent than the one without tachyon. The role
of tachyonic field in brane inflation scenario is different from that of the
ordinary matter field.Comment: 13 pages, no figure, RevTe
Towards 5D Grand Unification without SUSY Flavor Problem
We consider the renormalization group approach to the SUSY flavor problem in
the supersymmetric SU(5) model with one extra dimension. In higher dimensional
SUSY gauge theories, it has been recently shown that power corrections due to
the Kaluza-Klein states of gauge fields run the soft masses generated at the
orbifold fixed point to flavor conserving values in the infra-red limit. In
models with GUT breaking at the brane where the GUT scale can be larger than
the compactification scale, we show that the addition of a bulk Higgs
multiplet, which is necessary for the successful unification, is compatible
with the flavor universality achieved at the compactification scale.Comment: JHEP style file of 35 pages with 3 figures, Version to appear in JHE
A note on brane cosmology
We derive a new class of time-dependent solutions for the Randall-Sundrum
model by patching together isometries broken by the brane. Solutions generated
by generalized boosts along the fifth dimension are associated with localized
gravity and lead to an effective Friedman equation on the brane with a scale
factor exhibiting power law or exponential behaviour. The effective
energy-density on the brane depends linearly on the brane tension.Comment: 10 pages, references adde
