Stress concentration factors for circular, reinforced penetrations in pressurized cylindrical shells
The effect on stresses in a cylindrical shell with a circular penetration subject to internal pressure was investigated in thin, shallow linearly, elastic cylindrical shells. Results provide numerical predictions of peak stress concentration factors around nonreinforced and reinforced penetrations in pressurized cylindrical shells. Analytical results were correlated with published formulas, as well as theoretical and experimental results. An accuracy study was made of the finite element program for each of the configurations considered important in pressure vessel technology. A formula is developed to predict the peak stress concentration factor for analysis and/or design in conjunction with the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code
Pilot cryo tunnel: Attachments, seals, and insulation
Several different tests are described which simulated the actual configuration of a cryogenic wind tunnel operating at pressures up to 5 atmospheres (507 kPa) and temperatures from -320 F (78K) to 120 F (322K) in order to determine compatible bolting, adequate sealing, and effective insulating materials. The evaluation of flange attachments (continuous threaded studs) considered bolting based on compatible flanges, attachment materials, and prescribed bolt elongations. Various types of seals and seal configurations were studied to determine suitability and reusability under the imposed pressure and temperature loadings. The temperature profile was established for several materials used for structural supports

Pressure system recertification at NASA-Langley Research Center
Langley Research Center pressure systems are being recertified to ensure safe operation of these systems. The procedures for recertifying these pressure systems are reviewed. Generally, the analysis and inspection requirements outlined in the appropriate national consensus codes are followed. In some instances where the requirements of these codes are not met. The systems are analyzed further, repaired, modified and/or tested to demonstrate their structural integrity
Some effects of high-frequency x-rays on the oyster drill Urosalpinx cinerea
Scientists of ·the.Department of Agriculture (Bushland et al. 1955) recently announced the successful eradication of the screw-worm, Callitroga hominivorax, from the Dutch Island of Curacao. This was accomplished by releasing x-ray steralized males, which competed successfully with normal indigenous males for the females. After such matings the monogamous females deposited only sterile egg masses. Although several releases, Were necessary, eventually no fertile eggs Were detected at any of the.numerous observation points. Subsequent checks failed to reveal any live flies.
Because existing information concerning ecology and reproduction of drills appeared favorable, our group was encouraged to investigate this technique as a possible control method for oyster drills. The present paper is a report; of a· series of experiments which were designed to determine the lethal dose
