A study on friendship as educational strategy: its meaning by medical students
Objetivo: Diagnosticar a Amizade como estratégia didática. Métodos: Estudo qualitativo exploratório e descritivo. Questão norteadora: o que é Amizade e um professor amigo? Resultados: A sala de aula, Medicina Psicossomática, 2015 / 2º Semestre; 16 alunos brancos, no 6º, 7º e 8º perÃodos da medicina; 2, segunda graduação; 12 sexo feminino /4 masculino; idade média +/-25 anos; a maioria, 2 irmãos; provenientes sudeste e centro oeste; 3 casados; 2 com filhos. A Amizade, caracterÃstica da essência humana, comunicação dos significados do corpo sensÃvel. Os alunos pensam o professor, realizador do seu querer. Conclusão: As atividades pedagógicas na educação, formação e ação na saúde precisam incluir o sentir e o querer dos discentes. Os docentes necessitam competências da espiritualidade humana
Sarcoidosis or Tuberculosis? Difficulties in Diagnosis
A sarcoidose é uma doença multissistémica rara, caracterizada por granulomas não caseosos. A clÃnica e os testes diagnósticos são pouco sensÃveis e especÃficos, dificultando o diagnóstico diferencial, particularmente com a tuberculose. Relata-se o caso clÃnico de um rapaz de 17 anos com nódulos cutâneos dolorosos, astenia, hipersudorese e uveÃte recorrente com dois anos de evolução. Apresentava prova tuberculÃnica e interferon gamma release assay positivos, anemia e velocidade de sedimentação elevada, hipergamaglobulinemia, lisozima e enzima de conversão de angiotensina elevadas. A tomografia computorizada torácica mostrava opacidades micronodulares centrilobulares, gânglios mediastinicos e hilares calcificados; a broncofibroscopia e o teste de difusão de monóxido de carbono foram normais. A biópsia de nódulo cutâneo revelou paniculite septolobular.
A cintigrafia das glândulas lacrimal e salivar sugeriu sarcoidose. Não se podendo excluir tuberculose concomitante, iniciou antibacilares. Dois meses depois, foram associados prednisolona e metotrexato. Seis meses depois verificou-se remissão dos sintomas e normalização dos exames laboratoriais.
Este caso mostra as dificuldades no diagnóstico de sarcoidose e tuberculose na ausência dos achados microbiológicos e histológicos tÃpicos e a possibilidade da coexistência destas entidades.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
MapRepeat: an approach for effective assembly of repetitive regions in prokaryotic genomes
The newest technologies for DNA sequencing have led to the determination of the primary structure of the genomes of organisms, mainly prokaryotes, with high efficiency and at lower costs. However, the presence of regions with repetitive sequences, in addition to the short reads produced by the Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) platforms, created a lot of difficulty in reconstructing the original genome in silico. Thus, even today, genome assembly continues to be one of the major challenges in bioinformatics specifically when repetitive sequences are considered. In this paper, we present an approach to assemble repetitive regions in prokaryotic genomes. Our methodology enables (i) the identification of these regions through visual tools, (ii) the characterization of sequences on the extremities of gaps and (iii) the extraction of consensus sequences based on mapping of raw data to a reference genome. We also present a case study on the assembly of regions that encode ribosomal RNAs (rRNA) in the genome of Corynebacterium ulceransFRC11, in order to show the efficiency of the strategies presented here. The proposed methods and tools will help in finishing genome assemblies, besides reducing the running time and associated costs. Study of conditions for anisotropic plasma etching of tungsten and tungsten nitride using SF6/Ar gas mixtures
Results of the study of reactive ion etching of tungsten, tungsten nitride, and silicon in SF6/Ar gas mixtures are presented. For plasma diagnostics, optical emission spectroscopy (actinometry) was used. Using the actinometry technique, it was possible to show that etching mechanisms were different for Si-F and W-F chemistries. Anisotropic etching of tungsten/tungsten nitride using conventional reactive ion etcher has been obtained, and conditions of achieving anisotropic etching have been analyzed. A correlation is found between anisotropy of tungsten etching and the ratio of Si/W etch rates. Mechanisms of fluorine redistribution between the bottom/sidewall surfaces due to surface diffusion and/or reflection are proposed as possible reasons for the observed correlation.1493G179G18

Differences in self-control, self-efficacy and depressive symptoms between active and inactive middle-aged and older adults after 1 year of COVID restrictions
Objectives: The psychological impact of the prolonged lockdown measures in the UK as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic is unclear. Our aim was to determine if there are significant differences in self-control, self-efficacy, depressive symptoms and leisure motivation between UK older adults with differing levels of physical activity, and which of these variables can be used to predict activity level after 1 year of lockdown restrictions,
Methods: 521 adults aged 50–92 years completed an online survey consisting of several validated measures relating to physical activity, self-control, self-efficacy, depressive symptoms, and leisure motivation. Participant’s responses were grouped into active (≥150minutes activity per week) and inactive (<150minutes activity per week). Data was analysed using ANOVA, Pearson’s Correlation and Multiple Regression (forward stepwise).
Results: We found significant differences in self-efficacy, self-control, and depressive symptoms between physically active vs inactive subjects. High levels of self-control and self-efficacy were associated with higher levels of activity and fewer depressive symptoms. Self-control, amotivation, depressive symptoms and self-efficacy were predictors of physical activity level.
Conclusion: Psychological variables including self-control, self-efficacy, depressive symptoms and amotivation can be used to predict physical activity levels in UK middle-aged and older adults following 1 year of Covid restrictions
Dynamics of a Dual SARS-CoV-2 Lineage Co-Infection on a Prolonged Viral Shedding COVID-19 Case: Insights into Clinical Severity and Disease Duration
A few molecularly proven severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) cases of symptomatic reinfection are currently known worldwide, with a resolved first infection followed by a second infection after a 48 to 142-day intervening period. We report a multiple-component study of a clinically severe and prolonged viral shedding coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) case in a 17-year-old Portuguese female. She had two hospitalizations, a total of 19 RT-PCR tests, mostly positive, and criteria for releasing from home isolation at the end of 97 days. The viral genome was sequenced in seven serial samples and in the diagnostic sample from her infected mother. A human genome-wide array (>900 K) was screened on the seven samples, and in vitro culture was conducted on isolates from three late samples. The patient had co-infection by two SARS-CoV-2 lineages, which were affiliated in distinct clades and diverging by six variants. The 20A lineage was absolute at the diagnosis (shared with the patient's mother), but nine days later, the 20B lineage had 3% frequency, and two months later, the 20B lineage had 100% frequency. The 900 K profiles confirmed the identity of the patient in the serial samples, and they allowed us to infer that she had polygenic risk scores for hospitalization and severe respiratory disease within the normal distributions for a Portuguese population cohort. Evidence-based practice educational intervention studies: A systematic review of what is taught and how it is measured
Abstract Background Despite the established interest in evidence-based practice (EBP) as a core competence for clinicians, evidence for how best to teach and evaluate EBP remains weak. We sought to systematically assess coverage of the five EBP steps, review the outcome domains measured, and assess the properties of the instruments used in studies evaluating EBP educational interventions. Methods We conducted a systematic review of controlled studies (i.e. studies with a separate control group) which had investigated the effect of EBP educational interventions. We used citation analysis technique and tracked the forward and backward citations of the index articles (i.e. the systematic reviews and primary studies included in an overview of the effect of EBP teaching) using Web of Science until May 2017. We extracted information on intervention content (grouped into the five EBP steps), and the outcome domains assessed. We also searched the literature for published reliability and validity data of the EBP instruments used. Results Of 1831 records identified, 302 full-text articles were screened, and 85 included. Of these, 46 (54%) studies were randomised trials, 51 (60%) included postgraduate level participants, and 63 (75%) taught medical professionals. EBP Step 3 (critical appraisal) was the most frequently taught step (63 studies; 74%). Only 10 (12%) of the studies taught content which addressed all five EBP steps. Of the 85 studies, 52 (61%) evaluated EBP skills, 39 (46%) knowledge, 35 (41%) attitudes, 19 (22%) behaviours, 15 (18%) self-efficacy, and 7 (8%) measured reactions to EBP teaching delivery. Of the 24 instruments used in the included studies, 6 were high-quality (achieved ≥3 types of established validity evidence) and these were used in 14 (29%) of the 52 studies that measured EBP skills; 14 (41%) of the 39 studies that measured EBP knowledge; and 8 (26%) of the 35 studies that measured EBP attitude. Conclusions Most EBP educational interventions which have been evaluated in controlled studies focus on teaching only some of the EBP steps (predominantly critically appraisal of evidence) and did not use high-quality instruments to measure outcomes. Educational packages and instruments which address all EBP steps are needed to improve EBP teaching
Public data and open source tools for multi-assay genomic investigation of disease
Molecular interrogation of a biological sample through DNA sequencing, RNA and microRNA profiling, proteomics and other assays, has the potential to provide a systems level approach to predicting treatment response and disease progression, and to developing precision therapies. Large publicly funded projects have generated extensive and freely available multi-assay data resources; however, bioinformatic and statistical methods for the analysis of such experiments are still nascent. We review multi-assay genomic data resources in the areas of clinical oncology, pharmacogenomics and other perturbation experiments, population genomics and regulatory genomics and other areas, and tools for data acquisition. Finally, we review bioinformatic tools that are explicitly geared toward integrative genomic data visualization and analysis. This review provides starting points for accessing publicly available data and tools to support development of needed integrative methods
