BEC-BCS crossover in a cold and magnetized two color NJL model

The BEC-BCS crossover for a NJL model with diquark interactions is studied in the presence of an external magnetic field. Particular attention is paid to different regularization schemes used in the literature. A thorough comparison of results is performed for the case of a cold and magnetized two-color NJL model. According to our results, the critical chemical potential for the BEC transition exhibits a clear inverse magnetic catalysis effect for magnetic fields in the range $1 \lesssim eB/m_\pi^2 \lesssim 20$. As for the BEC-BCS crossover, the corresponding critical chemical potential is very weakly sensitive to magnetic fields up to $eB \sim 9\ m_\pi^2$, showing a much smaller inverse magnetic catalysis as compared to the BEC transition, and displays a strong magnetic catalysis from this point on.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures; v2 PRD versio

'The place I long to be': processos de resiliência em migrantes

Migration has been addressed in studies with a marked focus on its obstacles and difficulties, particularly in the contact with the host country. Recognizing that migrating is a complex process that involves several hardships, it is imperative to understand how migrants overcome adversity and to become aware of the resources mobilised to be cultural adjusted. Based on the theoretical perspective of resilience, this study aims to understand the contexts of adversity, resources and adjustment of Cape Verde migrants in Portugal, who have migrated to continue their studies in higher education. The collected 10 biographical narratives revealed the meanings of their life journeys, both in their country of origin and in the host country. The analysis of the narratives allowed the understanding of the diversity of resilience processes among the participants. The adversities were related to two main dimensions: cultural differences and interpersonal relationships with the Portuguese. In terms of resources, participants stressed the importance of the Cape Verdean diaspora upon arrival to the new country. Along the length of stay for some migrants, this remained the main resource; however, others were developing belongings and significant attachments in a broader context. Shear-melting of a hexagonal columnar crystal by proliferation of dislocations

A hexagonal columnar crystal undergoes a shear-melting transition above a critical shear rate or stress. We combine the analysis of the shear-thinning regime below the melting with that of synchrotron X-ray scattering data under shear and propose the melting to be due to a proliferation of dislocations, whose density is determined by both techniques to vary as a power law of the shear rate with a 2/3 exponent, as expected for a creep model of crystalline solids. Moreover, our data suggest the existence under shear of a line hexatic phase, between the columnar crystal and the liquid phase

Influence of processing temperature on quality and drying kinetics of a mixed fruit leather

A mixed fruit leather was developed with no chemical additives using five basic ingredients: pears, bananas, strawberries, honey, and lemon. The fruit puree was subjected to convective air drying at 60 ºC, 70 ºC, and 80 ºC and then packaged with a reversible metallized polypropylene foil and stored at 25 ºC for seven weeks. Different drying models were adjusted to the experimental data, with the Page model presenting the best fit. The obtained product was evaluated for nutritional and physical parameters. The values of phenolic compounds, water activity and water content were stable within the storage period, and the tested drying temperatures showed no impact. However, colour darkening occurred after the first month of storage. Regarding texture, adhesiveness did not seem to have a clear pattern over storage. The higher values of hardness and chewiness obtained at 60 ºC in comparison to 80 ºC are probably associated with the slightly lower water activity of the batches produced at 60 ºC. AVALIANDO A GESTÃO UNIVERSITÁRIA PONTO A PONTO: ESTUDO DE CASO

O processo de avaliação do ensino superior segue duas vertentes principais: a avaliação centrada no planejamento institucional com metas e indicadores globais bem definidos e a avaliação setorizada ou pontual que permite uma visão detalhada das rotinas e envolvimento dos indivíduos com a instituição. Neste trabalho apresentamos os resultados da avaliação pontual interna e externa de um setor administrativo da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. A avaliação foi realizada através análise de questionários com questões abertas e de resposta induzida. Os questionários foram preenchidos anonimamente e de forma voluntária por servidores da unidade (32 respondidos de 34 questionários enviados) e por usuários dos serviços da unidade (81 respondidos de 138 questionários enviados). Os resultados mostram, entre outros, os seguintes pontos positivos da avaliação interna: alto grau de envolvimento dos servidores com o processo de avaliação; satisfação com o trabalho; ambiente de trabalho propício à troca de idéias. Dos pontos negativos podemos ressaltar: os servidores sentem uma distribuição desigual da carga de trabalho no setor e fora dele e manifestam a falta de reuniões periódicas com as chefias. A avaliação externa revela respostas elogiosas ao trabalho do setor mas também que parte dos serviços prestados não são bem conhecidos da comunidade universitária. A auto avaliação é mais severa do que a avaliação externa, mostrando o espírito crítico dos servidores do setor. A avaliação permite recomendar ações concretas para reforçar os pontos positivos e minimizar os aspectos negativos como, por exemplo, o estabelecimento de uma agenda de reuniões periódicas entre servidores e chefias. Concluímos, além dos resultados diretos, que a avaliação setorizada é um mecanismo válido de diagnóstico da gestão e que existe, na comunidade universitária, um ambiente propício à continuidade da aplicação deste método

Glassy phases and driven response of the phase-field-crystal model with random pinning

We study the structural correlations and the nonlinear response to a driving force of a two-dimensional phase-field-crystal model with random pinning. The model provides an effective continuous description of lattice systems in the presence of disordered external pinning centers, allowing for both elastic and plastic deformations. We find that the phase-field crystal with disorder assumes an amorphous glassy ground state, with only short-ranged positional and orientational correlations even in the limit of weak disorder. Under increasing driving force, the pinned amorphous-glass phase evolves into a moving plastic-flow phase and then finally a moving smectic phase. The transverse response of the moving smectic phase shows a vanishing transverse critical force for increasing system sizes

Linking the hydrodynamic and kinetic description of a dissipative relativistic conformal theory

We use the entropy production variational method to associate a one particle distribution function to the assumed known energy-momentum and entropy currents describing a relativistic conformal fluid. Assuming a simple form for the collision operator we find this one particle distribution function explicitly, and show that this method of linking the hydro and kinetic description is a non trivial generalization of Grad's ansatz. The resulting constitutive relations are the same as in the conformal dissipative type theories discussed in J. Peralta-Ramos and E. Calzetta, Phys. Rev. D {\bfseries 80}, 126002 (2009). Our results may prove useful in the description of freeze-out in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions.Comment: v2: 23 pages, no figures, accepted in Phys. Rev.

Mudança de uso e cobertura das terras em municípios do nordeste do Estado de São Paulo.

A região da Alta Mogiana, principal área produtora de café do Estado de São Paulo, vem sofrendo um processo simultâneo de convivência e reestruturação produtiva entre o café e a cana-de-açúcar. Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar a declividade, a localização de usinas sucroalcooleiras e, principalmente, a mudança de uso e cobertura das terras nos municípios de Ribeirão Corrente e Cristais Paulista nos últimos 25 anos. O mapeamento dos municípios foi feito usando imagens de satélite obtidas em 1988 e 2013, que foram interpretadas usando o software ArcGis 10.1 e as ferramentas de análise contidas em seu banco de ferramentas, conhecidas como ArcToolbox, para mensurar as áreas de cada cultura. Ribeirão Corrente e Cristais Paulista, que não apresentavam cultivos de cana-de-açúcar em 1988, atualmente apresentam 2.184,6 ha e 3.447,5 ha dessa cultura, respectivamente. No entanto, nos últimos 25 anos, a área cultivada com café também apresentou aumento. Em Ribeirão Corrente, a área plantada com café aumentou de 2.862,5 ha para 6.630,5 ha. Em Cristais Paulista, o aumento foi de 4.401,4 ha para 10.174,1 ha. As declividades entre 0% e 12%, ideais para o cultivo da cana-de-açúcar, representam 92% da área de Ribeirão Corrente e 84% da área de Cristais Paulista. Portanto, ambos os municípios têm condições ótimas para a cultura da cana-de-açúcar, principalmente Cristais Paulista, que apresenta a maior parte das terras, em torno de 40%, ocupadas com pastagem (14.223,3 ha). Constata-se também que as áreas de cana-de-açúcar expandem-se de acordo com a proximidade de usinas instaladas em municípios próximos
