Mitochondrial dysfunction promoted by Porphyromonas gingivalis lipopolysaccharide as a possible link between cardiovascular disease and periodontitis
Oxidative stress is one of the factors that could explain the pathophysiological mechanism of inflammatory conditions that occur in cardiovascular disease (CVD) and periodontitis. Such inflammatory response is often evoked by specific bacteria, as the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of Porphyromonas gingivalis is a key factor in this process. The aim of this research was to study the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from periodontitis patients and to evaluate the influence of LPS on fibroblasts to better understand the pathophysiology of periodontitis and its relationship with CVD. PBMCs from patients showed lower CoQ10 levels and citrate synthase activity, together with high levels of ROS production. LPS-treated fibroblasts provoked increased oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction by a decrease in mitochondrial protein expression, mitochondrial mass, and mitochondrial membrane potential. Our study supports the
hypothesis that LPS-mediated mitochondrial dysfunction could be at the origin of oxidative stress in periodontal patients. Abnormal PBMC performance may promote oxidative stress and alter cytokine homeostasis. In

Reproductive capacity of the red cusk-eel genypterus chilensis (Guichenot, 1848) in captivity
Indexación: Scopus.This work was supported by the FONDEF Project D06I 1024 “Development of technologies for the production of red cusk-eel fingerlings (Genypterus chilensis)”.Genypterus chilensis is a marine fish of high gastronomic demand, whose capture has declined in recent years due to overfishing. In the development of the farming technology, high mortalities were obtained during egg incubation. The objective of this study is to contribute to the knowledge of fecundity and eggs viability of G. chilensis in captivity. The spawns of G. chilensis were analyzed over a period of 2 years and 3 months. The total fecundity was estimated by counting the masses and eggs produced monthly throughout the period. The results confirm that G. chilensis is a partial spawner, since a female may more than two masses of eggs per day, due to a large amount of mass spawned per season (621 average). The total production of masses of the Farming Centre during the period was 2,290; of these, only 7% (166) corresponding to 15,330,517 eggs were incubated. Because of its high fecundity, G. chilensis produces numerous masses of eggs, of which only a small percentage reaches incubation, as well as it occurs in other marine fish. © 2018, Escuela de Ciencias del Mar. The influence of pre-fermentative maceration and ageing factors on ester profile and marker determination of Pedro Ximenez sparkling wines
The influence of pre-fermentative maceration and ageing factors on the ester profiles of Pedro Ximenez sparkling wines was evaluated. The pre-fermentative maceration consisted of the skin-maceration of musts at 10 degrees C for 6 h. The sparkling wines were produced following the Champenoise method. Samples were monitored at 3, 6 and 9 months of ageing on lees. Sparkling wines with pre fermentative maceration displayed higher contents of ethyl esters of branched acids and cinnamates. Meanwhile, those without maceration showed higher levels of ethyl esters of fatty acids and higher alcohol acetates. The study of statistical interactions elucidated different hydrolytic kinetics and developments in higher alcohol acetates and ethyl esters of branched acids during ageing. The application of a dual criterion based on univariate (ANOVA) and multivariate analyses (OPLS-DA) allowed us to identify new potential volatile markers related to pre-fermentative maceration and ageing time, reported for the first time in sparkling wines
Bulk transport and oxygen surface exchange of the mixed ionic electronic conductor Ce1-xTbxO2-δ (x= 1⁄4, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5)
Bulk ionic and electronic transport properties and the rate of oxygen surface exchange of Tb-doped ceria have been evaluated as a function of Tb concentration, aiming to assess the potential use of the materials as high-temperature oxygen-transport membranes and oxygen reduction catalysts. The materials were synthesized by the co-precipitation method. Cobalt oxide (2 mol%) was added in order to improve sinterability and conductivity. The materials were studied by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperatureprogrammed desorption (TPD), thermogravimetry (TG), DC-conductivity and UV-vis spectrophotometry. The results indicate that the extent of mixed ionic–electronic conductivity is a function of temperature and can be tuned by modifying the Tb- (and Co-doping) concentration. Low Tb-content materials (x ¼ 0.1 and 0.2) are predominant ionic conductors, but the materials with 50 mol% Tb show both p-type electronic and ionic conductivity. The enhanced electronic conduction in Ce0.5Tb0.5O2 d is associated with narrowing of the band gap upon doping ceria with Tb. In addition, the surface chemistry of the samples was investigated by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and pulse isotopic exchange (PIE). The surface exchange rate is found to increase on increasing the level of Tb doping. The highest surface exchange rates in this study are found for materials doped with 50 mol% Tb
Field-Driven Transitions in the Dipolar Pyrochlore Antiferromagnet GdTiO
We present a mean-field theory for magnetic field driven transitions in
dipolar coupled gadolinium titanate GdTiO pyrochlore system. Low
temperature neutron scattering yields a phase that can be regarded as a 8
sublattice antiferromagnet, in which long-ranged ordered moments and
fluctuating moments coexist. Our theory gives parameter regions where such a
phase is realized, and predicts several other phases, with transitions amongst
them driven by magnetic field as well as temperature. We find several instances

Wireless sensor network for helicopter rotor blade vibration monitoring: Requirements definition and technological aspects
The main rotor accounts for the largest vibration source for a helicopter fuselage and its components. However, accurate blade monitoring has been limited due to the practical restrictions on instrumenting rotating blades. The use of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) for real time vibration monitoring promises to deliver a significant contribution to rotor performance monitoring and blade damage identification. This paper discusses the main technological challenges for wireless sensor networks for vibration monitoring on helicopter rotor blades. The first part introduces the context of vibration monitoring on helicopters. Secondly, an overview of the main failure modes for rotor and blades is presented. Based on the requirements for failure modes monitoring, a proposition for a multipurpose sensor network is presented. The network aims to monitor rotor performance, blade integrity and damage accumulation at three different scales referred to as macro layer, meso layer and micro layer. The final part presents the requirements for WSNs design in relation with sensing, processing, communication, actuation and power supply.\u
Metabolic Syndrome and Periodontitis: Is Oxidative Stress a Common Link?
Ponencia basada en este artículo en la 2nd International Mediterranean Meeting - Nutrition and Metabolism, Granada, 2010A review of pathological mechanisms that can explain the relationship between periodontitis and cardiovascular disease (CVD) is necessary to improve the management of both conditions. Metabolic syndrome is a combination of obesity, hypertension, impaired glucose tolerance or diabetes, hyperinsulinemia, and dyslipidemia. All these have been examined in recent years in terms of their relationship to periodontitis. Reviewed data indicate an association between some of them (body mass index, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol [HDL-C], triglycerides, high blood pressure, among others) and periodontitis. Oxidative stress may act as a potential common link to explain relationships between each component of metabolic síndrome and periodontitis. Both conditions show increased serum levels of products derived from oxidative damage, with a pro-inflammatory state likely influencing each other bidirectionally. Adipocytokines might modulate the oxidant/anti-oxidant balance in this relationship
Feasibility and effects of enhanced recovery vs. conventional care after emergency colon surgery for patients with left colon perforation
The impact of an enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) programme in emergency colorectal surgery has not yet been reported. The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and the results of patients included in an ERAS protocol following emergency colon surgery for left colon perforation. For this purpose, patients with a low to moderate risk of mortality, according to a Peritonitis Severity Score (PSS), and treated with an ERAS protocol (ERAS group) after emergency surgery for left colon perforation were compared for a period of 40 months (March 2014–June 2017) with a control group of patients treated with conventional care (CC group) during the 38 months prior to implementation of the new ERAS protocol (January 2011–February 2014). The main endpoint was 90-day postoperative morbidity according to the Clavien–Dindo classification. Secondary endpoints included length of postoperative hospital stay, 90-day readmission rate, protocol compliance and mortality. Fifty patients were included in the study, 29 in the ERAS group and 21 in the CC group. There were no significant differences between the groups in the demographic data or in the operative characteristics. A reduction in the incidence of postoperative complications (20.7% vs. 38%; p > 0.05) and in the postoperative hospital stay (7.7 + /- 3.85 vs. 10.9 + /- 5.6 days; p = 0.009) were observed in the ERAS group. The 90-day readmission rate did not differ significantly between the two groups (2 vs. 1). No 90-day mortality was observed in either group. The ERAS group showed better results than the CC group in protocol compliance. We conclude that ERAS protocols are feasible and help to reduce morbidity and length of hospital stay without adversely affecting the rate of readmission or mortality
