Academic libraries play a key role in encouraging literacy and cultural interest in students, staff and the community. In the present-day world, theft and vandalism has become very common and a severe problem in academic college libraries. This research paper mainly deals with work of the library professionals in investigating the book theft, vandalism, mutilation activities, and planning polices to control these malicious activities. A structured online questionnaire was prepared for the college librarians to the gather data for the research study. The research data was collected from forty library professionals. Insufficient copies of text books are the main cause for vandalism agreed upon by the majority 85% of the respondents. 80% of the library professionals mentioned to have CCTV installation which can reduce malpractices in the libraries As per the research study 100% of respondents agree that by conducting orientation program, checking the requirements of the patrons, providing the necessary resources required by them, by using wire mesh for windows and having a single way for entry and exit will help in combating vandalistic activities in the academic libraries. This study will also help the library professionals as well as the patrons to preserve and guard invaluable academic wealth of libraries for potential generations

Measurement of marine productivity using 15N and 13C tracers: Some methodological aspects

    Get PDF
Various experiments involving the measurement of new, regenerated and total productivity using 15N and 13C tracers were carried out in the Bay of Bengal (BOB) and in the Arabian Sea. Results from 15N tracer experiments indicate that nitrate uptake can be underestimated by experiments with incubation time <4 hours. Indirect evidence suggests pico- and nano-phytoplankton, on their dominance over microphytoplankton, can also influence the f-ratios. Difference in energy requirement for assimilation of different nitrogen compounds decides the preferred nitrogen source during the early hours of incubation. Variation in light intensity during incubation also plays a significant role in the assimilation of nitrogen. Results from time course experiments with both 15N and 13C tracers suggest that photoinhibition appears significant in BOB and the Arabian Sea during noon. A significant correlation has been found in the productivity values obtained using 15N and 13C tracers

Nitrogen uptake rates and f-ratios in the Equatorial and Southern Indian Ocean

    Get PDF
We report data on nitrate, ammonium and urea uptake rates from the Equatorial and Southern Indian Oceans. Productivity (0.81–2.23 mmol N m–2 d–1) over the Equatorial Indian Ocean was low, but the f-ratio (0.13–0.45) was relatively high. In the Southern Indian Ocean total N-uptake rate varied from 1.7 to 12.3 mmol Nm–2 d–1; it was higher in the Antarctic coast (69S) and lower over most of the Southern Ocean, the lowest being at 58S. The f-ratio also showed significant spatial variation, but was higher compared to values at the Equatorial Indian Ocean. The mean f-ratio in the Southern Indian Ocean was 0.50. The nitrate-specific uptake rates and f-ratios appear to have increased significantly in the recent past relative to earlier estimates. While productivity in the Southern Ocean is comparable to that in the Equatorial Indian Ocean, higher f-ratios in the former underscore its importance in the uptake of CO

Effect of high level iron enrichment on potential nitrogen uptake by marine plankton in the Southern Ocean

    Get PDF
Iron fertilization of the Southern Ocean is believed to counter the increasing CO 2 concentration in the atmosphere and the consequent global warming. Though a number of large scale iron enrichment experiments have been done in the recent past in different parts of the world ocean, little effort has been made to understand the effect of iron enrichment on nitrogen uptake rates and f-ratios. Here we assess the effect of iron addition on N-uptake rates and f-ratio in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean

Methodology for evaluating thermal track buckling in dual gauge tracks with continuous welded rail

In the National Spanish railway network, two types of track gauge with continuous welded rails are currently in use: the Iberian wide gauge (1668 mm) and the standard gauge (1435 mm). In order to improve links and freight traffic between different lines and with the rest of Europe, a dual gauge track with three rails was developed. This solution modifies the classical track configuration, so it is necessary to develop new methodologies and studies to understand its behavior. Among other loads applied on a continuous welded rail track, a considerable rise in temperature induces compressive stresses in the three rails that can lead to lateral track buckling. Moreover, on dual gauge tracks, the addition of the third rail increases the axial compression, which may lead to track instability. For this reason, a three-dimensional continuous welded rail model is developed in this study to be used for dual gauge track buckling analysis on straight tracks subjected to temperature load. The continuous welded rail dual gauge track model consists of beam, solid and spring elements, in which a non-linear behaviour of the ballast is considered. The results obtained may be used to predict the buckling capacity of the continuous welded rail on dual gauge tracks with respect to different parameters such as lateral resist-ance, lateral imperfections, sleeper spacing or torsional stiffness.Villalba Sanchis, I.; Insa Franco, R.; Salvador Zuriaga, P.; Martínez Fernández, P. Chatbot is gaining popularity in business groups as they will decrease customer service cost and can process numeroususers’requests at a time. Thus, messaging applications are presently the utmost popular way which is used by companies to deliver chatbot experiences to consumers. But to achieve numerous tasks there is a wide requirement to make chatbots as effective as likely. To address this problem, the design of a Twilio chatbot that is integrated with Dialogflow is explained, which provides an effective and precise answer for any query based on intents and utterances configured in the Dialogflow.Chatbots can be implemented using natural language tools that are available.Dialogflow and MicrosoftLuis are the two tools that are available to build a chatbot.Dialogflow(API.AI) allows developers to make conversational experiences by giving them with necessary tools to take on two kinds of tasks: first is torecognize and produce natural language utterances and second is to achieve the conversation. While there are numerous competing tools accessible in the market, Dialogflow was one of the firstand continuously evolving; moreover, it is easy to use and it can be integrated with other services

Abstract

Background

There is paucity of data regarding duration of fecal excretion and viremia on sequential samples from individual patients and its correlation with serum transaminases and antibody responses in patients with acute hepatitis E. This prospective study was undertaken at a tertiary care center in Northern India over 15 months. Only those patients of sporadic acute hepatitis E who were in their first week of illness and followed up weekly for liver function tests, IgM anti HEV antibody and HEV RNA in sera and stool were included. HEV RNA was done by RT - nPCR using two pairs of primers from RdRp region of ORF 1 of the HEV genome.

Results

Over a period of 15 months 60 patients met the inclusion criterion and were enrolled for the final analysis. The mean age of the patients was 29.2 ± 8.92 years, there were 39 males. The positivity of IgM anti HEV was 80% at diagnosis and 18.3% at 7th week, HEV RNA 85% at diagnosis and 6.6% at 7th week and fecal RNA 70% at the time of diagnosis and 20% at 4th week. The maximum duration of viremia detected was 42 days and fecal viral shedding was 28 days after the onset of illness.

Conclusion

Present study reported HEV RNA positivity in sera after normalization of transaminases. Fecal shedding was not seen beyond normalization of transaminases. However, viremia lasted beyond normalization of transaminases suggesting that liver injury is independent of viral replication.</p
