Anomalous lateral diffusion in a viscous membrane surrounded by viscoelastic media
We investigate the lateral dynamics in a purely viscous lipid membrane
surrounded by viscoelastic media such as polymeric solutions. We first obtain
the generalized frequency-dependent mobility tensor and focus on the case when
the solvent is sandwiched by hard walls. Due to the viscoelasticity of the
solvent, the mean square displacement of a disk embedded in the membrane
exhibits an anomalous diffusion. An useful relation which connects the mean
square displacement and the solvent modulus is provided. We also calculate the
cross-correlation of the particle displacements which can be applied for
two-particle tracking experiments.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure
Hydrodynamic coupling between two fluid membranes
The coupled in-plane diffusion dynamics between point-particles embedded in
stacked fluid membranes are investigated. We calculate the contributions to the
coupling longitudinal and transverse diffusion coefficients due to particle
motion within the different as well as the same membranes. The stacked geometry
leads to a hydrodynamic coupling between the two membranes.Comment: 9 Pages, 5 figures. Accepted for publication in J. Phys.: Condens.

Responsible Fisheries Kerala Fish Workers Open New Path in Co-Governance
Traditional fish workers and
trawl operators in Kerala, long at
loggerheads, have framed a code
of responsible fishing practices.
The article argues that this
landmark agreement between
two hitherto irreconcilable groups
was borne out of a crisis in pelagic
fish resources. It also argues that
the agreement holds important
lessons for multi-stakeholder
governance in the fisheries sector
A Novel Skeleton Extraction Algorithm for 3d Wireless Sensor Networks
Wireless sensor network design is critical and resource allocation is a major problem which remains to be solved satisfactorily. The discrete nature of sensor networks renders the existing skeleton extraction algorithms inapplicable. 3D topologies of sensor networks for practical scenarios are considered in this paper and the research carried out in the field of skeleton extraction for three dimensional wireless sensor networks. A skeleton extraction algorithm applicable to complex 3D spaces of sensor networks is introduced in this paper and is represented in the form of a graph. The skeletal links are identified on the basis of a novel energy utilization function computed for the transmissions carried out through the network. The frequency based weight assignment function is introduced to identify the root node of the skeleton graph. Topological clustering is used to construct the layered topological sets to preserve the nature of the topology in the skeleton graph. The skeleton graph is constructed with the help of the layered topological sets and the experimental results prove the robustness of the skeleton extraction algorithm introduced. Provisioning of additional resources to skeletal nodes enhances the sensor network performance by 20% as proved by the results presented in this paper
Effects of an embedding bulk fluid on phase separation dynamics in a thin liquid film
Using dissipative particle dynamics simulations, we study the effects of an
embedding bulk fluid on the phase separation dynamics in a thin planar liquid
film. The domain growth exponent is altered from 2D to 3D behavior upon the
addition of a bulk fluid, even though the phase separation occurs in 2D
geometry. Correlated diffusion measurements in the film show that the presence
of bulk fluid changes the nature of the longitudinal coupling diffusion
coefficient from logarithmic to algebraic dependence of 1/s, where s is the
distance between the two particles. This result, along with the scaling
exponents, suggests that the phase separation takes place through the Brownian
coagulation process.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. Accepted for publication in Europhys. Let
Gibbs energies of formation of intermetallic phases in the systems Pt-Mg, Pt-Ca, and Pt-Ba and some applications
The standard Gibbs energies of formation of platinum-rich intermetallic compounds in the systems Pt-Mg, Pt-Ca, and Pt-Ba have been measured in the temperature range of 950 to 1200 K using solid-state galvanic cells based on MgF2, CaF2, and BaF2 as solid electrolytes. The results are summarized by the following equations: ΔG° (MgPt7) = -256,100 + 16.5T (±2000) J/mol ΔG° (MgPt3) = -217,400 + 10.7T (±2000) J/mol ΔG° (CaPt5) = -297,500 + 13.0T (±5000) J/mol ΔG° (Ca2Pt7) = -551,800 + 22.3T (±5000) J/mol ΔG° (CaPt2) = -245,400 + 9.3T (±5000) J/mol ΔG° (BaPt5) = -238,700 + 8.1T (±4000) J/mol ΔG° (BaPt2) = -197,300 + 4.0T (±4000) J/mol where solid platinum and liquid alkaline earth metals are selected as the standard states. The relatively large error estimates reflect the uncertainties in the auxiliary thermodynamic data used in the calculation. Because of the strong interaction between platinum and alkaline earth metals, it is possible to reduce oxides of Group ILA metals by hydrogen at high temperature in the presence of platinum. The alkaline earth metals can be recovered from the resulting intermetallic compounds by distillation, regenerating platinum for recycling. The platinum-slag-gas equilibration technique for the study of the activities of FeO, MnO, or Cr2O3 in slags containing MgO, CaO, or BaO is feasible provided oxygen partial pressure in the gas is maintained above that corresponding to the coexistence of Fe and "FeO.
Device Free Localisation Techniques in Indoor Environments
The location estimation of a target for a long period was performed only by device based localisation technique which is difficult in applications where target especially human is non-cooperative. A target was detected by equipping a device using global positioning systems, radio frequency systems, ultrasonic frequency systems, etc. Device free localisation (DFL) is an upcoming technology in automated localisation in which target need not equip any device for identifying its position by the user. For achieving this objective, the wireless sensor network is a better choice due to its growing popularity. This paper describes the possible categorisation of recently developed DFL techniques using wireless sensor network. The scope of each category of techniques is analysed by comparing their potential benefits and drawbacks. Finally, future scope and research directions in this field are also summarised
Investigation of complete and incomplete fusion in Li+Sn reaction around Coulomb barrier energies
The complete and incomplete fusion cross sections for Li+Sn
reaction were measured using online and offline characteristic -ray
detection techniques. The complete fusion (CF) cross sections at energies above
the Coulomb barrier were found to be suppressed by 26 \% compared to the
coupled channel calculations. This suppression observed in complete fusion
cross sections is found to be commensurate with the measured total incomplete
fusion (ICF) cross sections. There is a distinct feature observed in the ICF
cross sections, i.e., -capture is found to be dominant than
-capture at all the measured energies. A simultaneous explanation of
complete, incomplete and total fusion (TF) data was also obtained from the
calculations based on Continuum Discretized Coupled Channel method with short
range imaginary potentials. The cross section ratios of CF/TF and ICF/TF
obtained from the data as well as the calculations showed the dominance of ICF
at below barrier energies and CF at above barrier energies.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure
