Algebraic disturbances and their consequences in rotating channel flow transition

It is now established that subcritical mechanisms play a crucial role in the transition to turbulence of non-rotating plane shear flows. The role of these mechanisms in rotating channel flow is examined here in the linear and nonlinear stages. Distinct patterns of behaviour are found: the transient growth leading to nonlinearity at low rotation rates RoRo, a highly chaotic intermediate RoRo regime, a localised weak chaos at higher RoRo, and complete stabilization of transient disturbances at very high RoRo. At very low RoRo, the transient growth amplitudes are close to those for non-rotating flow, but Coriolis forces already assert themselves by producing distinct asymmetry about the channel centreline. Nonlinear processes are then triggered, in a streak-breakdown mode of transition. The high RoRo regimes do not show these signatures, here the leading eigenmode emerges as dominant in the early stages. Elongated structures plastered close to one wall are seen at higher rotation rates. Rotation is shown to reduce non-normality in the linear operator, in an indirect manifestation of Taylor--Proudman effects. Although the critical Reynolds for exponential growth of instabilities is known to vary a lot with rotation rate, we show that the energy critical Reynolds number is insensitive to rotation rate. It is hoped that these findings will motivate experimental verification, and examination of other rotating flows in this light

Spain and the populist radical right: Will Vox become a permanent feature of the Spanish party system?

Vox won the third largest share of the vote in Spain’s general election in November. But is the success of the party a temporary phenomenon or a sign that populist radical right parties are destined to become a permanent feature of the Spanish party system? Lisa Zanotti and José Rama write that while political resentment and the Catalan independence issue created fertile ground for Vox, the party may find its future growth limited by the resilience of the left-right political cleavage in Spanish politics

Over the past three decades, our understanding of the nature, assessment and treatment of childhood mental disorders has increased significantly. Some of the most recent advances come from transdiagnostic and neuropsychological-based approaches. While the relationship of similar neuropsychological deficits with some mental disorders, such as neurodevelopmental and severe mental disorders like schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, is widely established, there is more controversy about their relationship with the so-called internalizing and externalizing disorders. In this article, our goal was to highlight the potential of incorporating cognitive strategies from integrative neuropsychological and transdiagnostic approaches to improve the effectiveness of empirically-supported cognitive-behavioral therapy for internalizing and externalizing mental disorders in childhood and adolescence. The results of the present work indicate that the vast majority of internalizing disorders, including the presence of anxiety, depressive, trauma- and stress-related, and obsessive-compulsive and related disorders, as well as externalizing symptoms (corresponding to conduct disorder and ODD), present neuropsychological deficits and that their consideration may be relevant to improve the effectiveness of psychotherapeutic interventions in children and adolescents by incorporating neuropsychology-based assessment and treatment tools. The inclusion of neuropsychological support strategies in therapy for childhood mental disorders implies an advance and has clear implications for the enhancement of psychological care for childhood mental disorders.

Vox, Covid-19, and populist discourses in Spain

The radical right party Vox has been a harsh critic of the Spanish government’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. José Javier Olivas Osuna and José Rama present findings from an analysis of the speeches made by the party’s leader, Santiago Abascal, during the first wave of the crisis. They write that Abascal’s interventions became increasingly populist as the pandemic progressed. There is also evidence of a ‘spillover’ effect, with the level of populism displayed by other parties also increasing

The populist radical right party Vox has emerged as a major force in Spanish politics, but what characterises the party and its voters? Drawing on a new study, José Rama, Stuart J. Turnbull-Dugarte and Andrés Santana present a comprehensive assessment of the party’s ideological makeup and the key features of its electoral base

Effects of equatorially-confined shear flow on MRG and Rossby waves

Linear modal stability analysis of a mean zonal shear flow is carried out in the framework of rotating shallow water equations (RSWE), both under the β\beta-plane approximation and in the full spherical coordinate system. Two base flows -- equatorial easterly (EE) and westerly (EW) -- with Gaussian profiles highly confined to small latitudes are analyzed. At low Froude number, mixed Rossby-gravity (MRG) and Rossby waves are found to be particularly affected by shear, with prominent changes at higher wavenumbers. These waves become practically non-dispersive at large wavenumbers in EE. The perturbations are found to be more confined equatorially in EE than in EW with the degree of confinement being more pronounced in the β\beta-plane system compared to the full spherical system. At high Froude number, the phase speeds are significantly larger in the β\beta-plane system for all families of waves. Under the β\beta-plane approximation, exponentially unstable modes can be excited, having negative (positive) phase speed in EE (EW). Strikingly, this flow is always neutrally stable with the full spherical system. This speaks for the importance of studying the whole spherical system even for equatorially confined shear

Caracterización de un modelo de sistema de información interorganizacional para el sector de la edificación domótica

    Get PDF

Inter-organizational information systems adoption for service innovation in building sector

    Get PDF
The building sector has experienced a significant decline in recent years in Spain and Europe as a result of the financial crisis that began in 2007. This drop accompanies a low penetration of information and communication technologies in inter-organizational oriented business processes. The market decrease is causing a slowdown in the building sector, where only flexible small and medium enterprises (SMEs) survive thanks to specialization and innovation in services, which allow them to face new market demands. Inter-organizational information systems (IOISs) support innovation in services, and are thus a strategic tool for SMEs to obtain competitive advantage. Because of the inherent complexity of IOIS adoption, this research extends Kurnia and Johnston's (2000) theoretical model of IOIS adoption with an empirical model of IOIS characterization. The resultant model identifies the factors influencing IOIS adoption in SMEs in the building sector, to promote further service innovation for competitive and collaborative advantages. An empirical longitudinal study over six consecutive years using data from Spanish SMEs in the building sector validates the model, using the partial least squares technique and analyzing temporal stability. The main findings of this research are the four ways an IOIS might contribute to service innovation in the building sector. Namely: a) improving client interfaces and the link between service providers and end users; b) defining a specific market where SMEs can develop new service concepts; c) enhancing the service delivery system in traditional customer?supplier relationships; and d) introducing information and communication technologies and tools to improve information management
