Reducing model bias in a deep learning classifier using domain adversarial neural networks in the MINERvA experiment
We present a simulation-based study using deep convolutional neural networks
(DCNNs) to identify neutrino interaction vertices in the MINERvA passive
targets region, and illustrate the application of domain adversarial neural
networks (DANNs) in this context. DANNs are designed to be trained in one
domain (simulated data) but tested in a second domain (physics data) and
utilize unlabeled data from the second domain so that during training only
features which are unable to discriminate between the domains are promoted.
MINERvA is a neutrino-nucleus scattering experiment using the NuMI beamline at
Fermilab. -dependent cross sections are an important part of the physics
program, and these measurements require vertex finding in complicated events.
To illustrate the impact of the DANN we used a modified set of simulation in
place of physics data during the training of the DANN and then used the label
of the modified simulation during the evaluation of the DANN. We find that deep
learning based methods offer significant advantages over our prior track-based
reconstruction for the task of vertex finding, and that DANNs are able to
improve the performance of deep networks by leveraging available unlabeled data
and by mitigating network performance degradation rooted in biases in the
physics models used for training.Comment: 41 page
Taxonomic revision and additional comments of some bats (Mammalia, Chiroptera) reported from Bolivia, with an updated checklist based on voucher material with verified identities
We review the taxonomic identities of museum specimens of three bat species previously reported from Bolivia. We comment on some erroneously reported taxa, or taxa either not represented by voucher materials or based on insufficient data (including acoustic detections) to verify their taxonomic affinities. As result of this review, the list of bat species known to occur in Bolivia is updated to eight families and 133 species, unlike the nine families and 146 species of previous lists. Some recommendations for future research and a brief historical revision of bat inventories in the country are included
Sports, morality and body. The voices of sportswomen under Franco's dictatorship
The aim of this research is to study sportswomen's perceptions and experiences of women's sport in Francoist Spain (1939-1975). The main objective is to analyse the social, moral and aesthetic elements that are present in the experience of these athletes. This study was carried out with an intentional sample of 24 women from Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, Basque Country, Catalonia and Valencia. They were interviewed by a network of researchers from six universities. Outstanding results show the existence of social limitations to start sports practice (particularly in the post-war period); the importance of sport as a character-building aspect; sport's remarkable influence on their body self-concept; and the incidence on sports of the mainstream moral discourse, which created a female model that even affected sports clothing. The main conclusion is that sportswomen in that period were pioneers and had to fight against most of society in order to develop their facet as athletes, as they would not follow the established model
3D Correlations in the Lyman- Forest from Early DESI Data
We present the first measurements of Lyman- (Ly) forest
correlations using early data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument
(DESI). We measure the auto-correlation of Ly absorption using 88,509
quasars at , and its cross-correlation with quasars using a further
147,899 tracer quasars at . Then, we fit these correlations using
a 13-parameter model based on linear perturbation theory and find that it
provides a good description of the data across a broad range of scales. We
detect the BAO peak with a signal-to-noise ratio of , and show that
our measurements of the auto- and cross-correlations are fully-consistent with
previous measurements by the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey
(eBOSS). Even though we only use here a small fraction of the final DESI
dataset, our uncertainties are only a factor of 1.7 larger than those from the
final eBOSS measurement. We validate the existing analysis methods of
Ly correlations in preparation for making a robust measurement of the
BAO scale with the first year of DESI data
The Lyman- forest catalog from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument Early Data Release
We present and validate the catalog of Lyman- forest fluctuations for
3D analyses using the Early Data Release (EDR) from the Dark Energy
Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey. We used 96,317 quasars collected from
DESI Survey Validation (SV) data and the first two months of the main survey
(M2). We present several improvements to the method used to extract the
Lyman- absorption fluctuations performed in previous analyses from the
Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). In particular, we modify the weighting scheme
and show that it can improve the precision of the correlation function
measurement by more than 20%. This catalog can be downloaded from
https://data.desi.lbl.gov/public/edr/vac/edr/lya/fuji/v0.3 and it will be used
in the near future for the first DESI measurements of the 3D correlations in
the Lyman- forest
Characterization of the cork oak transcriptome dynamics during acorn development
Background: Cork oak (Quercus suber L.) has a natural distribution across western Mediterranean regions and is a keystone forest tree species in these ecosystems. The fruiting phase is especially critical for its regeneration but the molecular mechanisms underlying the biochemical and physiological changes during cork oak acorn development are poorly understood. In this study, the transcriptome of the cork oak acorn, including the seed, was characterized in five stages of development, from early development to acorn maturation, to identify the dominant processes in each stage and reveal transcripts with important functions in gene expression regulation and response to water.
Results: A total of 80,357 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) were de novo assembled from RNA-Seq libraries representative of the several acorn developmental stages. Approximately 7.6 % of the total number of transcripts present in Q. suber transcriptome was identified as acorn specific. The analysis of expression profiles during development returned 2,285 differentially expressed (DE) transcripts, which were clustered into six groups. The stage of development corresponding to the mature acorn exhibited an expression profile markedly different from other stages. Approximately 22 % of the DE transcripts putatively code for transcription factors (TF) or transcriptional regulators, and were found almost equally distributed among the several expression profile clusters, highlighting their major roles in controlling the whole developmental process. On the other hand, carbohydrate metabolism, the biological pathway most represented during acorn development, was especially prevalent in mid to late stages as evidenced by enrichment analysis. We further show that genes related to response to water, water deprivation and transport were mostly represented during the early (S2) and the last stage (S8) of acorn development, when tolerance to water desiccation is possibly critical for acorn viability.
Conclusions: To our knowledge this work represents the first report of acorn development transcriptomics in oaks. The obtained results provide novel insights into the developmental biology of cork oak acorns, highlighting transcripts putatively involved in the regulation of the gene expression program and in specific processes likely essential for adaptation.
