The strategy & goals of the Muslim Brotherhood in the Syrian Revolution

Issue title: Preludes to the Islamic State: contextualizing the rise of extremism in the Syrian UprisingSince the Hama events of 1982 that led to the Muslim Brotherhood’s forced exile from Syria, the group’s aim has been the return to Syria. To achieve their goals, they have made use of different negotiation channels with the Assad regime during the past three decades. However, at one point, those channels were cut, and, being ostracized not only by the Syrian authorities, but also by many in the political opposition to the regime, the Brotherhood has crossed the threshold of relative and discontinuous passivity to full-blown oppositional activity. This paper examines the different strategies they have followed, such as political activity, provision of humanitarian aid, the exertion of influence on armed groups combating the regime, and the benefitting from the ideological similarities they bear with the newly elected regimes as well as the Turkish ruling party. Building on the information we examine, it is our hypothesis that the fact that the Muslim Brotherhood seemed to be the best-organized and coherent oppositional group might not necessarily lead them to power, especially when more radical groups with a jihadist strategy have taken the lead of the Islamist field and the situation remains extremely complex.Publisher PD

La conferencia internacional «Refugees on the move: thinking beyong the Euro-Mediterranean crisis» (21 y 22 de abril 2016) que inspira esta publicación, fue organizada gracias a la subvención de la Generalitat de Catalunya, AGAUR, a través el proyecto GRC-SGR 2014 (1524).En el marco del CER-M (UAB-UB), hemos organizado la conferencia internacional «Refugees on the move: thinking beyong the Euro-Mediterranean crisis» celebrada el 21 y 22 de abril 2016 en el CCCB y Espai Contrabandos. Esta conferencia tuvo como objetivo crear un espacio de debate y reflexión en torno a las implicaciones teóricas, político-legales y sociales que estos desplazamientos están conllevando. En el evento participaron académicos de ámbito nacional e internacional, así como personas expertas y profesionales que trabajan sobre el terreno. Fruto de estas jornadas, y a partir de las aportaciones de sus participantes, el equipo del CER-M (UAB-UB) presentamos este monográfico bilingüe.The CER-M (UAB-UB) organised the international conference "Refugees on the move: thinking beyond the Euro-Mediterranean crisis" on the 21st and 22nd of April 2016 at the CCCB and Espai Contrabandos. Sin embargo, la especial posición geo-estratégica de Siria, la complicación y prolongación de la crisis y a la injerencia de diversos actores han desvirtuado algunos postulados iniciales de la revolución, que hoy se intentan recuperar para salvar la revolución en sí y el país en conjunto, una empresa complicada por la connivencia internacional para evitar que la revolución triunfe

Complejidad y contradicciones de las relaciones entre los grupos islamistas: el caso de Siria

Con una realidad cambiante en Oriente Medio, el régimen sirio se encuentra en una difícil coyuntura. De caer el régimen y viendo la tendencia en otros países, el islam político podría jugar un papel clave en la formación del nuevo gobierno, lo que podría reconfigurar las otrora complejas relaciones entre los grupos islamistas de la zona. Este artículo profundiza en las contradicciones de estas relaciones partiendo de las negociaciones entre el régimen sirio y los Hermanos Musulmanes con vistas a garantizar la vuelta de estos a Siria y las mediaciones que han llevado a cabo sus homólogos en otros países. In a changing context in the Middle East, the Syrian regime is in a difficult situation. Should the regime fall, and considering the trend of other Arab countries, political Islam will play a key role in the formation of the new government. This, in turn, could result in a redefinition of the formerly complex relationships between Islamist groups in the area. This article focuses on the contradictions inherent to these relationships through the study of the negotiations between the Syrian regime and the Muslim Brotherhood whose aim was the return of the latter to Syria, and the study of the mediation that their counterparts in other countries have carried out
