The Contagion Box: Measuring Co-Movements in Financial Markets by Regression Quantiles

    Get PDF
We propose a semi-parametric approach to investigate whether co-dependence across markets increase in periods of extreme returns. Given that returns on one market fall in the extreme tail of their own distribution, we compute the conditional probability that returns on another market will also take on extreme values. An application to the “tequila†crisis is performedcontagion, conditional probabilities, CAViaR

Quantifying prehension in persons with stroke post rehabilitation

    Get PDF
This study describes the analysis of reaching and grasping abilities of the hemiparetic arm and hand of patients post stroke after a series of interactive virtual reality (VR) simulated training sessions and conventional physical therapy of similar intensity. Six subjects participated in VR training and five subjects in clinical rehabilitation for two weeks. Subjects’ finger joint angles were measured during a kinematic reach to grasp test using CyberGlove® and arm joint angles were measured using the trackSTARTM system prior to training and after training. Downward force applied to the object during grasping was assessed using Nano17TM, a force/torque sensor system that is added to the reach to grasp test paradigm for the VR trained subjects. Results from total movement time, grasping time, and average applied force show that subjects significantly decreased their average kinematic times and force applied to object during reaching and grasping tasks. Classification of hand postures using Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) during the reaching phase of movement shows an improvement in subjects’ accuracies and abilities to preshape their fingers post training in both groups. A system utilizing magnetic trackers, a data glove, and a force sensor is sensitive to changes in motor performance elicited by a robotically facilitated, virtually simulated motor intervention and physical therapy of similar intensity

Effectiveness of universal multiple-risk lifestyle interventions in reducing depressive symptoms:Systematic review and meta-analysis

Though many studies have explored the association between single-risk lifestyle interventions and depression, unhealthy lifestyle factors often co-occur, with adults engaging in two or more risk behaviours. To date, little is known about the effectiveness of universal multiple-risk lifestyle interventions to reduce depressive symptoms. We conducted a SR/MA to assess the effectiveness of universal multiple-risk lifestyle interventions (by promoting a healthy diet, physical activity and/or smoking cessation) to reduce depressive symptoms in adults. We searched MEDLINE, Scopus, CENTRAL, PsycINFO, WOS, OpenGrey, the ICTRP and other sources from inception to 16 September 2019. We selected only randomized controlled trials, with no restrictions on language or setting. Our outcome was the reduction of depressive symptoms. We calculated the standardized mean difference using random-effect models. Sensitivity, sub-group and meta-regression analyses were performed. Of the 9386 abstracts reviewed, 311 were selected for full-text review. Of these, 23 RCTs met the inclusion criteria, including 7558 patients from four continents. Twenty RCTs provided valid data for inclusion in the meta-analysis. The pooled SMD was −0.184 (95% CI, −0.311 to −0.057; p = 0.005). We found no publication bias, but heterogeneity was substantial (I2 = 72%; 95% CI: 56% to 82%). The effectiveness disappeared when only studies with a low risk of bias were included. The quality of evidence according GRADE was low. Although a small preventive effect was found, the substantial heterogeneity and RCTs with lower risk of bias suggested no effectiveness of universal multiple-risk lifestyle interventions in reducing depressive symptoms in a varied adult population. Further evidence is required

A CREDIT ANALYSIS OF THE UNBANKED AND UNDERBANKED: AN ARGUMENT FOR ALTERNATIVE DATA

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to ascertain the statistical and economic significance of non-traditional credit data for individuals who do not have sufficient economic data, collectively known as the unbanked and underbanked. The consequences of not having sufficient economic information often determines whether unbanked and underbanked individuals will receive higher price of credit or be denied entirely. In terms of regulation, there is a strong interest in credit models that will inform policies on how to gradually move sections of the unbanked and underbanked population into the general financial network. In Chapter 2 of the dissertation, I establish the role of non-traditional credit data, known as alternative data, in modeling borrower default behavior for individuals who unbanked and underbanked individuals by taking a statistical approach. Further, using a combined traditional and alternative auto loan data, I am able to make statements about which alternative data variables contribute to borrower default behavior. Additionally, I devise a way to statistically test the goodness of fit metric for some machine learning classification models to ascertain whether the alternative data truly helps in the credit building process. In Chapter 3, I discuss the economic significance of incorporating alternative data in the credit modeling process. Using a maximum utility approach, I show that combining alternative and traditional data yields a higher profit for the lender, rather than using either data alone. Additionally, Chapter 3 advocates for the use of loss functions that aligns with a lender\u27s business objective of making a profit

Objective: to assess echocardiographic structural&functional changes in non rheumatic AF Patients And Methods: 200 Patients were divided into 3 groups: Group A: Patients with AF,Group B: Patients have one or more of risk factors (hypertension, IHD, DM, HF, old age) without AF,Group C: normal healthy individuals. A full medical history and complete physical examination and the following investigation were arranged: FBS, RBS, ECG, CXR and echocardiograph. Result :The study show there is a significance increase in LAD ,LVEDS ,LVEDD and decrease in fractional shortening in group A &B And group A greater than group B and both groups greater than group C. Conclusion: Subjects with increase LA size, LVEDS, LVEDD and decrease in fractional shortening were at a significance increase risk for development of AF. This study clarifies the role of cardiac structural& functional characteristics’ in relation to susceptibility to AF .so the best method for reducing the adverse complication of AF through prevention of development of AF
