The Health Status of African Americans in Allegheny County-A Black Paper for the Urban League of Pittsburgh

    Get PDF
This report examines the health conditions of African Americans in Allegheny County (hereafter referred to as “the County”). It documents the leading causes of death of black men and women, infant mortality, rates of firearm injuries and fatalities, and rates of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). The data reported serves to benchmark the current health status of African Americans and, by way of comparison, whites in the County. It is an important initial step towards achieving the Healthy People 2010 goal of eliminating racial/ethnic health status disparities in the County

This paper examines whether the profile of the respondents: age, number of living children, marital status, income status, employment status, educational background, current feeding practices, and level of knowledge on the importance of EBF affects feeding among infants 0-6 months old. The study uses a descriptive analysis using a normative survey with a study population of 102 mothers from the Municipality of Santa Fe Romblon respondents who were informed and given consent to secure. The result is as follows mothers, whose age ranges from 21 to 25, are the most prevailing, 39%, of the total respondents are practicing EBF. The more children the respondent had higher the percentage of practicing EBF, 55% of respondents say; they are living in with a partner, either married through church wedding, civil or in the state of cohabitation, lower-income mothers (45%) practice EBF more compared to other income class. Mothers without job practice EBF more (51%) exclusive breastfeeding are practiced more by elementary graduate mothers (63%), forty-four (44) mothers out of one hundred two (102) respondents are doing exclusive breastfeeding, at least 63% have revealed little knowledge on the importance of exclusive feeding

If the following characteristics of respondents are taken into consideration: age, number of living children, marital status, income level, employment level, educational background, current feeding practices, and level of knowledge about the importance of EBF, it is hypothesized that these characteristics will have an impact on feeding among infants aged 0 to 6 months. A descriptive research employing a normative survey was conducted with a study population of 102 mothers from the Municipality of Santa Fe in the province of Romblon, after informed permission had been obtained. The following is the outcome: moms between the ages of 21 and 25 are the most prevalent, accounting for 39 percent of all respondents who use EBF. With more children in their household, the percentage of respondents who practice EBF increases. Additionally, 55 percent of respondents said that they are living with a partner, either married through a church wedding, civil marriage or in the state of cohabitation. Lower-income mothers (45 percent) practice EBF more frequently than mothers from other income classes. Mothers without a job are more likely to practice EBF (51 percent), while elementary graduate mothers are more likely to practice exclusive breastfeeding (63 percent). Forty-four (44) mothers out of one hundred and two (102) respondents are practicing exclusive breastfeeding, and at least 63 percent have revealed little knowledge about the importance of exclusive breastfeeding

The zinc/bromine (Zn/Br2) flow battery has received considerableattention in recent years [e.g., (2-4)]. Although itis agreed that the solution chemistry is important in thesystem, most of the work that has been done is concentratedon the design variables. In this note the basic masstransfer-solution and surface kinetics are studied to furnisha better understanding of the system

Cheese in Chijnaya: Communal Entrepreneurship in Rural Peru

    Get PDF
Individual entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship may be more common both in daily life and in the research literature, but community- based entrepreneurship also plays an important role in economic development. We present a case study of community entrepreneurship in a rural area of the Andes, where the community of Chijnaya operates a successful cheese production business. Buying milk from its farmer members in the community, the business produces cheeses that are sold in regional urban markets and beyond. This account draws on decades of ethnographic research and collaboration with the community. Here, we discuss the history of the community in general and of the cheese enterprise in particular. The organizational structure of the business is outlined along with a description of the production processes. We end with an analysis of problems faced by the community in moving the enterprise forward toward a more profitable future and a discussion of the relevance of this case to entrepreneurship studies

Mitigating NPD And R&D Risks Via A Portfolio Effect In Country Choice

    Get PDF
New Product Development as well as Research and Development projects tend to be inherently risky investments.  Most MNC’s today have great latitude in choosing site and country locations to build or contract Research or Development projects.  MNC R&D risks, corporate wide, can be moderated via a diversification of NPD/R&D projects across multiple cultures and countries.  In fact there is some evidence that R&D global diversification can generate synergies.  (Fast track projects that work around the clock via work being done in three locations each 8 hours off from the other.) Foreign R&D facilities can help serve as outposts to facilitate the entrance into strategic foreign markets. This paper attempts to develop decision methodologies for allocating NPD/R&D globally with the goal of both reducing risks and increasing global competitiveness

Electrochemical Characterization of Electronically Conductive Polypyrrole on Cyclic Voltammograms

    Get PDF
Experimental and theoretical cyclic voltammograms for electronically conducting polypyrrole film are obtained from the identical conditions and compared to each other to characterize electrochemical behavior of the polymer. A comparison of the simulated and experimental cyclic yoltammograms shows quantitative agreement. The profiles of the dependent variables show that the switching process is governed by the availability of the counter ion to the polypyrrole electrode and the amount of electroactive sites. Sensitivity analysis shows that the double layer effects have more influence in the cyclic voltammograms than the electrokinetic effects

    Online Orientation for 4-H Volunteers

    Get PDF
The 4-H Online Volunteer Orientation Series provides an opportunity for volunteers to receive orientation at times and places that are convenient for them. Online orientation provides a means for efficiently orienting a large cadre of volunteers. Twenty voice-over PowerPoint presentations were created in three series: 4-H Camp (seven presentations), Volunteer Certifications (three presentations), and 4-H Clubs (10 presentations). Each presentation concludes with a five-question quiz designed to assess knowledge gained. Volunteers scoring 80% or higher receive credit. Volunteers who have completed orientation better understand and fulfill their roles, serve more effectively, and have a greater likelihood of continuing their service
