    Removal of H2S from Biogas by Iron (Fe3+) Doped MgO on Ceramic Honeycomb Catalyst using Double Packed Columns System

    Hydrogen sulfide is a toxic and corrosive in nature, gas should be safely removed from the biogas streams before subjecting into the fuel cell. Fe3+ doped magnesium oxide was synthesized using sol-gel technique and dip coating process of Fe3+ doped MgO on foam ceramic honeycomb. XRD and SEM indicate that Fe3+ in Fe3+ doped MgO on foam ceramic honeycomb catalyst is finely dispersed in the MgO support. Performance of the synthesized Fe3+ doped magnesium oxide on the honeycomb catalyst was examined for hydrogen sulfide (H2S) oxidation by double packed column scrubbers. The absorption column was used for H2S scrubbing from biogas by deionized water absorption and catalytic column was used as catalyst bed for degradation of absorbed H2S in scrubbing water. In the catalytic column, counter current flow of the scrubbing water and air through the catalyst pack was performed for H2S oxidation accompany with catalyst regeneration. System capacity for H2S removal from gas stream showed 98% constant along 3 hr testing time at room temperature

    Utilization of waste from concentrated rubber latex industry for composting with addition of natural activators

    The utilization of wastes from concentrated rubber latex industry for composting is promising as a sustainable and environmentally friendly method.The aim of this study was to utilize wastes including skim latex serum (SS) and concentrated latex sludge (CS) as a raw composting ingredient after being combined with para rubber wood sawdust (SD) at a ratio of SS, CS, and SD of 1:1:1.Effective microorganisms, pig manure and chicken manure were used as natural activator sand were added to the composted materials at ratios of 10, 20, and 30 wt%.The best activator for composting was found to be PM added at a ratio of 10 wt% after a composting time of 25 days.The growth of Chinese kale after application of this compost to which chitosan had been added produced a much higher yield of fresh weight than those was achieved using commercial compost. Thus, compost from waste materials produced from the rubber latex industry could be employed in conjunction with chitosan to promote better agricultural growth, and logically should contribute to cost saving in the latex industry as well as aiding its waste disposal

    Ethanol Extraction of Active Ingredients and Antioxidants from Germinated Sangyod Rice

    Sangyod rice is a special red rice variety, originally planted in Pattalung province of Thailand. This type of rice is high in nutrients and antioxidants. This research aimed to produce a rice extract by solvent extraction of germinated Sangyod rice. For the extraction, ethanol at the concentrations 0, 50, or 95% (v/v) was used. Various extraction times and rice-to-solvent ratios, as well as solvent reuse and recovery were studied. The results show that the extract from germinated Sangyod rice has higher TPC, TFC, and GABA contents and higher antioxidant activity than not germinated or Riceberry rice. An 0.5 h extraction time with rice-tosolvent ratio 1:15 (g/mL) were optimal for extracting germinated Sangyod rice. The 50% ethanol solvent gave the highest TPC, TFC, GABA and DPPH antioxidant activities, at 1,627.00 ± 53.08 mg GAE/100 g rice, 559.50 ± 17.06 mg QE/100 g rice, 9.97 ± 0.17 mg GABA/100 g rice, and 0.16 ± 0.01 mg/mL, respectively. Regarding stability of the rice serum, temperature affected stability of the extracts. The results of this study can provide new opportunities to promote Sangyod rice to farmers and add value to rice products. The extract has potential as an active ingredient in cosmetics

    Effects of Ceftriaxone on Oxidative Stress and Inflammation in a Rat Model of Chronic Cerebral Hypoperfusion

    International audienceCeftriaxone (CTX) exerts a neuroprotective effect by decreasing glutamate excitotoxicity. We further studied the underlying mechanisms and effects of CTX early post-treatment on behavior in a cerebral hypoperfusion rats. The rats’ common carotid arteries (2VO) were permanently ligated. CTX was treated after ischemia. Biochemical studies were performed to assess antioxidative stress and inflammation. Behavioral and histological studies were then tested on the ninth week after vessel ligation. The 2VO rats showed learning and memory deficits as well as working memory impairments without any motor weakness. The treatment with CTX was found to attenuate white matter damage, MDA production, and interleukin 1 beta and tumor necrosis factor alpha production, mainly in the hippocampal area. Moreover, CTX treatment could increase the expression of glia and the glial glutamate transporters, and the neuronal glutamate transporter. Taken together, our data indicate the neuroprotective mechanisms of CTX involving the upregulation of glutamate transporters’ expression. This increased expression contributes to a reduction in glutamate excitotoxicity and oxidative stress as well as pro-inflammatory cytokine production, thus resulting in the protection of neurons and tissue from further damage.
