The problem of sustainability of forest plantations is one of the most topical in forestry. It depends on many reasons, among which climatic, anthropogenic and edaphic factors are determinative ones. Frequent natural phenomena that reduce the stability and productivity of ecosystems in general have significant negative influence on the size of the forest natural resource potential of the Carpathian region. Natural phenomena in the mountain-forest ecosystems of the Carpathians (floods, soil erosion, mudflows, landslides, winds, avalanches, periodic droughts, and forest fires) appear as a result of tension in ecosystems due to the impact of a number of natural and anthropogenic factors on them, causing the violation of complex interconnection bonds and atypical geophysical processes. Among various, different by the source factors, causing such natural phenomena, one can always distinguish between conductive and derivative. They also interact with each other, that is, they amplify some of them, thereby slowing down the others. In areas of natural phenomena losses to forest ecosystems are catastrophic (deformation of wood, reducing its growth in height and stock, the emergence of fungal diseases, increasing the danger of forest fires, reducing the aesthetic and recreational value of forest landscapes). Natural rehabilitation of damaged forest plantations is a long-term process. The development of forest cultures and forestry in difficult mountain conditions require significant costs, therefore, it is important to use a number of factors that slow down the negative effects of natural phenomena, increase the stability and increase the productivity of forest plantations (improvement of environmentally friendly technologies of logging, creation of mixed-aged mixed plantations and their vertical step structure, optimization of the network of forest roads, implementation of reforestation with wind resistant aboriginal rocks). In general, the main areas of forest management should be maintaining the forest area at an optimal level, preserving the biodiversity of forest ecosystems, increasing their resistance to negative environmental factors and applying the nature-saving methods of forest exploitation.
In the complex of polyfunctional role of the Carpathian mountain forests the prominent place belongs to their stability and protective properties. In particular, this applies to the Gorgany landscape with fairly complex forest-related and geomorphological natural conditions that contribute to the most serious development of the Carpathian region for harmful natural phenomena. Distribution of forests and natural phenomena in the Gorgany region is characterized by high-altitude changes. The share of spruce stands is quite rapidly increasing from 600 m above the sea level, becoming continuously spreading with a height of 1150 m. At the same time, in this direction, the proportion of fir and beech plantings decreases, which respectively disappear at gipsometric levels of 1000 and 1200 m. The greatest number of harmful processes is inherent in anthropogenically altered landscapes of low mountains with beech and fir forests, somewhat smaller – for the buckwheat, fir-spruce and spruce forests. Distribution of forests and natural phenomena in Gorgany region is characterized by high-altitude changes. The forest cover of the catchments here grows from 45–50 % at the foot of the mountains to 90–95 % in the upper spruce belt. The main ways of preventing harmful events are the optimization of forests and the creation of protective stands in the lowlands, the restoration of indigenous forest plantations in all zones, the ecologization of the main felling sites and their technologies. The auxiliary measures include the treatment of watercourses from deforestation, recultivation of drafts and water retention of surface drainage on logs, raising the upper boundary of the forest and preventing snow avalanches, as well as afforestation of rocky debris and sedentary areas. For all six basins of the main Gorgany rivers, the planning and implementation of inter-sectoral environmental measures is very topical.Охарактеризовано природні умови, лісистість водозборів і породний склад лісів гірського ландшафту Скибових Горган в Українських Карпатах. Breakpoint mapping by whole genome sequencing identifies PTH2R gene disruption in a patient with midline craniosynostosis and a de novo balanced chromosomal rearrangement
Background: Craniosynostosis (CRS) is a premature closure of calvarial sutures caused by gene mutation or environmental factors or interaction between the two. Only a small proportion of non-syndromic CRS (NSC) patients have a known genetic cause, and thus, it would be meaningful to search for a causative gene disruption for the development NSC. We applied a whole genome sequencing approach on a 15-month-old boy with sagittal and metopic synostosis to identify a gene responsible for the development of the disease. Methods and results Conventional chromosome study revealed a complex paracentric inversion involving 2q14.3 and 2q34. Array comparative genomic hybridisation did not show any copy number variation. Multicolour banding analysis was carried out and the breakpoints were refined to 2q14 and 2q34. An intronic break of the PTH2R gene was detected by whole genome sequencing and fluorescence in situ hybridisation analysis confirmed disruption of PTH2R. Conclusions: We report PTH2R as a gene that is disrupted in NSC. The disruption of the PTH2R gene may cause uncontrolled proliferation and differentiation of chondrocytes, which in turn results in premature closure of sutures. This addition of PTH2R to the list of genes associated with NSC expands our understanding of the development of NSC
Event-by-event fluctuations at SPS
Results on event-by-event fluctuations of the mean transverse momentum and
net charge in Pb-Au collisions, measured by the CERES Collaboration at
CERN-SPS, are presented. We discuss the centrality and beam energy dependence
and compare our data to cascade calculations.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, proceedings to INPC2004 Goteborg, Swede
Semi-Hard Scattering Unraveled from Collective Dynamics by Two-Pion Azimuthal Correlations in 158 A GeV/c Pb + Au Collisions
Elliptic flow and two-particle azimuthal correlations of charged hadrons and
high- pions ( 1 GeV/) have been measured close to mid-rapidity in
158A GeV/ Pb+Au collisions by the CERES experiment. Elliptic flow ()
rises linearly with to a value of about 10% at 2 GeV/. Beyond
1.5 GeV/, the slope decreases considerably, possibly indicating
a saturation of at high . Two-pion azimuthal anisotropies for
1.2 GeV/ exceed the elliptic flow values by about 60% in mid-central
collisions. These non-flow contributions are attributed to near-side and
back-to-back jet-like correlations, the latter exhibiting centrality dependent
broadening.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. Letters, 4 pages, 5 figure
Modification of the rho meson detected by low-mass electron-positron pairs in central Pb-Au collisions at 158 A GeV/c
We present a measurement of pair production in central Pb-Au
collisions at 158 GeV/. As reported earlier, a significant excess of the
pair yield over the expectation from hadron decays is observed. The
improved mass resolution of the present data set, recorded with the upgraded
CERES experiment at the CERN-SPS, allows for a comparison of the data with
different theoretical approaches. The data clearly favor a substantial
in-medium broadening of the spectral function over a density-dependent
shift of the pole mass. The in-medium broadening model implies that
baryon induced interactions are the key mechanism to in-medium modifications of
the -meson in the hot fireball at SPS energy.Comment: Revised versio
Universal Pion Freeze-out in Heavy-Ion Collisions
Based on an evaluation of data on pion interferometry and on particle yields
at mid-rapidity, we propose a universal condition for thermal freeze-out of
pions in heavy-ion collisions. We show that freeze-out occurs when the mean
free path of pions lambda_f reaches a value of about 1 fm, which is much
smaller than the spatial extent of the system at freeze-out. This critical mean
free path is independent of the centrality of the collision and beam energy
from AGS to RHIC.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, revised version resubmitted to PR
Flow and non-flow event anisotropies at the SPS
A study of differential elliptic event anisotropies (v_2) of charged
particles and high-pt pions in 158 AGeV/c Pb+Au collisions is presented.
Results from correlations with respect to the event plane and from two-particle
azimuthal correlations are compared. The latter give systematically higher v_2
values at pt>1.2GeV/c providing possibly an evidence of a non-flow semihard
component.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, Quark Matter 2002, Nantes, to appear in Nucl.

e+e--pair production in Pb-Au collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon
We present the combined results on electron-pair production in 158 GeV/n
{Pb-Au} (= 17.2 GeV) collisions taken at the CERN SPS in 1995 and
1996, and give a detailed account of the data analysis. The enhancement over
the reference of neutral meson decays amounts to a factor of 2.31 for semi-central collisions (28%
) when yields are integrated over 200 MeV/ in
invariant mass. The measured yield, its stronger-than-linear scaling with
, and the dominance of low pair strongly suggest an
interpretation as {\it thermal radiation} from pion annihilation in the
hadronic fireball. The shape of the excess centring at 500
MeV/, however, cannot be described without strong medium modifications of
the meson. The results are put into perspective by comparison to
predictions from Brown-Rho scaling governed by chiral symmetry restoration, and
from the spectral-function many-body treatment in which the approach to the
phase boundary is less explicit.Comment: 39 pages, 40 figures, to appear in Eur.Phys.J.C. (2005
