Understanding the dynamical structure of pulsating stars. HARPS spectroscopy of the delta Scuti stars rho Pup and DX Cet
High-resolution spectroscopy is a powerful tool to study the dynamical
structure of pulsating stars atmosphere. We aim at comparing the line asymmetry
and velocity of the two delta Sct stars rho Pup and DX Cet with previous
spectroscopic data obtained on classical Cepheids and beta Cep stars. We
obtained, analysed and discuss HARPS high-resolution spectra of rho Pup and DX
Cet. We derived the same physical quantities as used in previous studies, which
are the first-moment radial velocities and the bi-Gaussian spectral line
asymmetries. The identification of f=7.098 (1/d) as a fundamental radial mode
and the very accurate Hipparcos parallax promote rho Pup as the best standard
candle to test the period-luminosity relations of delta Sct stars. The action
of small-amplitude nonradial modes can be seen as well-defined cycle-to-cycle
variations in the radial velocity measurements of rho Pup. Using the
spectral-line asymmetry method, we also found the centre-of-mass velocities of
rho Pup and DX Cet, V_gamma = 47.49 +/- 0.07 km/s and V_gamma = 25.75 +/- 0.06
km/s, respectively. By comparing our results with previous HARPS observations
of classical Cepheids and beta Cep stars, we confirm the linear relation
between the atmospheric velocity gradient and the amplitude of the radial
velocity curve, but only for amplitudes larger than 22.5 km/s. For lower values
of the velocity amplitude (i.e., < 22.5 km/s), our data on rho Pup seem to
indicate that the velocity gradient is null, but this result needs to be
confirmed with additional data. We derived the Baade-Wesselink projection
factor p = 1.36 +/- 0.02 for rho Pup and p = 1.39 +/- 0.02 for DX Cet. We
successfully extended the period-projection factor relation from classical
Cepheids to delta Scuti stars.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A (in press
Impedance spectroscopy of Al/AlN/n-Si metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) structures
In this work, a comprehensive characterization of metal-insulator-semiconductor structures by impedance spectroscopy is demonstrated for the case of electrically insulating, highly c-axis oriented, 600 nm sputter-deposited AlN films on n-Si substrates with Al top electrodes. Direct visual analysis and equivalent circuit fitting of the dielectric data were performed. For the latter procedure, the circuit model consisted of three series resistor-capacitor connection elements for the three dielectric contributions detected. The three contributions were identified as the AlN film, n-Si substrate, and an interface barrier effect. Several essential device parameters were determined separately, by visual or equivalent circuit fitting analysis, such as the dielectric permittivity of the AlN layer, the temperature dependence of the AlN permittivity, and the resistances of the AlN layer, the n-Si substrate, and the interface contribution. Furthermore, DC bias dependent impedance measurements allowed the identification of a Schottky-type interface barrier
Apoptotic pathways in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the most common causes of cancer related death. Despite the advances in understanding of the molecular pathogenesis, pancreatic cancer remains a major unsolved health problem. Overall, the 5-year survival rate is less than 5% demonstrating the insufficiency of current therapies

How water binds to microcline feldspar (001)
Microcline feldspar (KAlSiO) is a common mineral with important roles
for Earth's ecological balance. It participates in the carbon, potassium, and
water cycles, contributing to CO sequestration, soil formation, and
atmospheric ice nucleation. To understand the fundamentals of these processes,
it is essential to establish microcline's surface atomic structure and its
interaction with the omnipresent water molecules. This work presents
atomic-scale results on microcline's lowest-energy surface and its interaction
with water, combining ultrahigh vacuum investigations by non-contact atomic
force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy with density functional
theory calculations. An ordered array of hydroxyls bonded to silicon or
aluminum readily forms on the cleaved surface at room temperature. The distinct
proton affinities of these hydroxyls influence the arrangement and orientation
of the first water molecules binding to the surface, holding potential
implications for the subsequent condensation of water.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure
Sp converted waves reveal the structure of the lithosphere below the Alps and their northern foreland
The structure of the lithosphere is reflecting its evolution. The Moho of the European lithosphere has already been studied intensively. This is, however, not yet the case for the lower boundary of the lithosphere, i.e., the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (LAB). We are using S-to-P converted seismic waves to study the structures of the Moho and the LAB beneath Europe including the greater Alpine Area with data from the AlpArray project and the European networks of permanent seismic stations. We use plain waveform stacking of converted waves without deconvolution and compare the results with stacking of deconvolved traces. We also compare Moho depths determinations using S-to-P converted waves with those obtained by other seismic methods. We present more detailed information about negative velocity gradients (NVG) below the Moho. Its lower bound may be interpreted as representing the LAB. We found that the thickness of the European mantle lithosphere is increasing from about 50°N towards the Alps along the entire east-west extension of the Alps. The NVG has also an east dipping component towards the Pannonian Basin and the Bohemian Massif. The Alps and their northern foreland north of about 50°N are surrounded in the east, west and north by a north dipping mantle lithosphere. Along 50°N, where the NVG is reversing its dip direction towards the north, is also the area along which the volcanoes of the European Cenozoic Rift System are located. Our results possibly indicate that the Alpine collision has deformed the entire lithosphere of the Alpine foreland as far north as about 50°N
