The scientific meeting for which the Proceedings are published in this volume 28 of Bocconea was not organized by mere chance. It was designed as an appropriate way to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Professor Werner Greuter, tireless protagonist of OPTIMA and key figure in Mediterranean, European and, by certain of his skills, indeed world botany. The two-day Symposium was sponsored by the Section of Botany and Plant Ecology of the STEBICEF Department of the University of Palermo and received substantial support from the Selinunte and Cave di Cusa Archaeological Park, the International Foundation Pro Herbario Mediterraneo, and the Foundation Herbarium Greuter. The scientific programme comprised four sessions with invited speakers, plus a poster session. About one hundred scholars from many countries, young and old, were in attendance, including the authors of reports, lectures, and posters. Some of the papers assembled in this proceedings volume have been published in advance in Flora Mediterranea, volumes 28 (2018) and 29 (2019). Also included here are texts contributed, as a testimony of esteem, by some of professor Greuter鈥檚 friends who were unable to be present at the meeting

ABSTRACT- The family Fabaceae: the ornamental species cultivated in a Mediterranean area (W Sicily, Italy) and an identification key for - A study undertaken between 1997 and 2000 in a Mediterranean area, W Sicily (Italy), has shown that the ornamental flora of is formed by 633 species, of which 38 appertain to 21 genera. Indications of this family, genus and species are given with an identification key. Trees, shrubs, herbaceous and climbing species belonging to Fabaceae and cultivated in Western Sicily gardens are listed

The ornamental flora of western Sicily was studied in an area which covers three provinces : Palermo, Agrigento and Trapani. A total of 95 towns and villages were visited and ornamental plants growing in the public green areas were studied. The ornamental flora of this area reaches a total of 633 species, which belong to 120 families and 364 genera. Fabaceae, Asteraceae and Rosacea are the best represented families

A laboratory-based scoring system predicts early treatment in Rai 0 chronic lymphocytic leukemia

We present a laboratory-based prognostic calculator (designated CRO score) to risk stratify treatment-free survival in early stage (Rai 0) chronic lymphocytic leukemia developed using a training-validation model in a series of 1,879 cases from Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States. By means of regression analysis, we identified five prognostic variables with weighting as follows: deletion of the short arm of chromosome 17 and unmutated immunoglobulin heavy chain gene status, 2 points; deletion of the long arm of chromosome 11, trisomy of chromosome 12, and white blood cell count>32.0x103/microliter, 1 point. Low, intermediate and high-risk categories were established by recursive partitioning in a training cohort of 478 cases, and then validated in four independent cohorts of 144/395/540/322 cases, as well as in the composite validation cohort. Concordance indices were 0.75 in the training cohort and ranged from 0.63 to 0.74 in the four validation cohorts (0.69 in the composite validation cohort). These findings advocate potential application of our novel prognostic calculator to better stratify early-stage chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and aid case selection in risk-adapted treatment for early disease. Furthermore, they support immunocytogenetic analysis in Rai 0 chronic lymphocytic leukemia being performed at the time of diagnosis to aid prognosis and treatment, particularly in today's chemo-free era
