Social capital, local institutions, and cooperation between firms

    Get PDF
There are many different reasons behind cooperation between firms and many possible interpretations are assumed to be based on an assessment of endogenous benefits of collective action directly generated by taking part in a joint project. This paper attempts at verifying the interpretative capacity of models analysing the cooperation between firms using not only technological or organisational factors and rivalry between firms, but also some proxy variables of social capital, of experience accumulation in collective action and of institutional capacity for initiative. The specific aim of our work is hence that of providing an interpretation of Italian inter-province differentials in the propensity of inter-firm cooperation.35

We present MCMAS-X, an extension of the OBDD-based model checker MCMAS for multi-agent systems, to explicit and deductive knowledge. We use MCMAS-X to verify authentication properties in the TESLA secure stream protocol

Spin Hall effect in a two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of a magnetic field

We study the spin Hall effect of a two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of a magnetic field and both the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions. We show that the value of the spin Hall conductivity, which is finite only if the Zeeman spin splitting is taken into account, may be tuned by varying the ratio of the in-plane and out-of-plane components of the applied magnetic field. We identify the origin of this behavior with the different role played by the interplay of spin-orbit and Zeeman couplings for in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic field components.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, submitte

Artificial intelligence for heart rate variability analyzing with arrhythmias

    Get PDF
Introduction. Existing standards of Heart Rate Variability (HRV) technology limit its use to sinus rhythm. A small number of extrasystoles is allowed, if the device used has special procedures for the detection and replacement of ectopic complexes. However, it is important to expand the indicated limits of the applicability of the HRV technology. This specially regards the cases when the HRV technology looks promising in the diagnostics, as, for example, in atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter. Materials and Methods. All ECG measurements were performed on XAI-MEDICA¼ equipment and software. Processing of the obtained RR Series was carried out using the software Kubios¼ HRV Standard. All recommended HRV characteristics for Time-Domain, Frequency-Domain and Nonlinear were calculated. The purpose of the work. The article presents an artificial intelligence (AI) procedure for detecting episodes of arrhythmias and reconstruction of core patient’s rhythm, and demonstrates the efficacy of its use for the HRV analysis in patients with varying degrees of arrhythmias. The results of the study. It was shown efficiency of developed artificial intelligence procedure for HRV analyzing of patients with different level of arrhythmias. These were demonstrated for Time-Domain, Frequency-Domain and Nonlinear methods. The direct inclusion into review of Arrhythmia Episodes and the use of the initial RR Series leads to a significant distortion of the results of the HRV analysis for the whole set of methods and for all considered options for arrhythmia. Conclusion. High efficacy of operation of the procedure AI core rhythm extraction from initial RR Series for patients with arrhythmia was reported in all cases

NLC Luminosity as a Function of Beam Parameters

    Get PDF
Realistic calculation of NLC luminosity has been performed using particle tracking in DIMAD and beam-beam simulations in GUINEA-PIG code for various values of beam emittance, energy and beta functions at the Interaction Point (IP). Results of the simulations are compared with analytic luminosity calculations. The optimum range of IP beta functions for high luminosity was identified.Comment: 4 pages, 7 figure

Inverse Spin Hall Effect and Anomalous Hall Effect in a Two-Dimensional Electron Gas

    Get PDF
We study the coupled dynamics of spin and charge currents in a two-dimensional electron gas in the transport diffusive regime. For systems with inversion symmetry there are established relations between the spin Hall effect, the anomalous Hall effect and the inverse spin Hall effect. However, in two-dimensional electron gases of semiconductors like GaAs, inversion symmetry is broken so that the standard arguments do not apply. We demonstrate that in the presence of a Rashba type of spin-orbit coupling (broken structural inversion symmetry) the anomalous Hall effect, the spin Hall and inverse spin Hall effect are substantially different effects. Furthermore we discuss the inverse spin Hall effect for a two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling; our results agree with a recent experiment.Comment: 5 page

Simulation Studies of the NLC with Improved Ground Motion Models

    Get PDF
The performance of various systems of the Next Linear Collider (NLC) have been studied in terms of ground motion using recently developed models. In particular, the performance of the beam delivery system is discussed. Plans to evaluate the operation of the main linac beam-based alignment and feedback systems are also outlined.Comment: Submitted to XX International Linac Conferenc

Comparing BDD and SAT based techniques for model checking Chaum's Dining Cryptographers Protocol

    Get PDF
We analyse different versions of the Dining Cryptographers protocol by means of automatic verification via model checking. Specifically we model the protocol in terms of a network of communicating automata and verify that the protocol meets the anonymity requirements specified. Two different model checking techniques (ordered binary decision diagrams and SAT-based bounded model checking) are evaluated and compared to verify the protocols
