Length-Based Stock Assessment for the Data-Poor Bombay Duck Fishery from the Northern Bay of Bengal Coast, Bangladesh

    Get PDF
The Bombay duck (Harpadon nehereus) forms the second-largest single-species marine fishery in Bangladesh and therefore has a significant impact on the local economy, providing employment, food, and nutrition to thousands of people. Despite the immense importance, this fishery has never been a priority for the relevant regulatory authorities. To enhance the sustainability of this fishery, an effective management policy based on the scientific evaluation of the current stock’s status is urgently required. Therefore, this study used three methodological approaches (traditional size structure-based stock assessment to reveal current exploitation status; the length-based spawning potential ratio (LB-SPR) to evaluate the stock’s spawning biomass; and Froese’s sustainability indicators for sustainable fishing) to conduct a thorough assessment of the Bombay duck stock to establish basic standards for the sustainable management of this fishery. The results revealed that this fishery is presently suffering from overexploitation and the stock’s spawning biomass (SPR = 8%) is below the limit reference point because of the juvenile-oriented fishing behavior of the fishery. Based on the outputs, this study recommended the mesh size regulation of the set bag nets (SBNs) (5 cm mesh size for the codend) to ensure not to catch immature fishes with a length equal to or smaller than 17.95 cm; and reduce the existing number of SBNs by half to reduce fishing pressure on the stock to ensure the sustainability of this fishery

NETWORKED ISSUE AGENDAS ON SOCIAL MEDIA: INTERRELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN POLARIZED CAMPAIGNS, NEWS MEDIA, AND PARTY SUPPORTERS

    No full text
U.S. politics, media, and citizens are highly polarized, stipulating that society is divided between Democrats and Republicans (Hameleers, 2019). The U.S. has seen an increased political polarization over the past 25 years (Heltzel & Laurin, 2020; Westfall, Van Boven, Chambers, & Judd, 2015). Technological development in the campaign environment has fueled this political polarization (Hong & Kim, 2016). In such a polarized technological society, partisan news media cover political issues and events from their ideological perspective (Arceneaux, Johnson, & Murphy, 2012), which may affect the polarized citizens. The Republican Party is conservative, while the Democratic Party is liberal (Westfall, Van Boven, Chambers, & Judd, 2015). Each party has issue agendas that they prioritize during the campaign. When political campaigns post a message on social media, they not only post just one issue but several related issues. These interlinked issues have a networked effect on the partisan news media and the polarized citizens (McCombs, Shaw, & Weaver, 2014). How political campaigns interlinked different issue agendas during campaigns in a polarized environment has not been investigated. This study intends to see the similarities and dissimilarities between the Democratic and Republican Party issue networks using a network agenda setting theory during the 2020 U.S. presidential campaign and how they build and set networked issue agendas in the partisan news media and the polarized public on Facebook. The study uses a hybrid content analysis and network analysis of issue agendas presented by the Biden and Trump campaigns, partisan media (CNN and Fox News), and the Democratic Party and the Republican Party supporters on Facebook. Facebook posts are collected using Facebook’s CrowdTangle Search option from January 1, 2021, to November 3, 2020. This study uses a hybrid content analysis method which engages with both human coders and computational means to analyze big data sets (Guo et al., 2016). The data analysis involves measuring core-periphery block model, clique analysis, network visualization, and Quadratic Assignment Procedures (QAP). A social networking analysis software, UCINET, is used for measuring core-periphery block model, clique analysis, and QAP correlations(Borgatti, Everett, & Johnson, 2018). The scholarship of political campaign communication needs to reconnect to the ideological positions of political campaigns, partisan news media, and party supporters. This holistic study is significant in terms of better understanding the mechanism of networked agenda-setting activities of presidential campaigns in a polarized environment on Facebook. Methodologically, this study offers new techniques for investigating networked issue agendas of campaigns, news media, and citizens. It uses core-periphery block model and clique analysis as indicators of network agenda building and network agenda-setting influences. Social media practitioners like campaign managers can consider the political polarization, fragmented nature of social media, and polarized audience during political campaigning

Television talk shows in Bangladesh: public sphere challenges

    Get PDF
Television talk shows are very popular in Bangladesh. People want to know descriptively what is happening at home and abroad. On television talk shows, experienced and well known guests analyse contemporary issues and events. These kind of programs can be a public platform where everyone has an equal opportunity to participate in a debate by which democratic decisions are reached. Through creating this kind of public opportunity, television talk shows can create awareness among the country's common people on different political, social, and economic issues. It also plays an important role in drawing attention of the government and policy makers to their activities. In this study, the researcher has used content analysis and survey methods with research tools like in-depth interview for data collection. Two television talk shows like “Tritiyo Matra” of Channel i television and “Ekattor Journal” of Ekushey television. The two talk shows were selected from November 25, 2014 to January 05, 2015. During this time,Bangladeshexperienced a turbulent political situation between the two major political parties. If the talk shows of Bangladeshi television channels play a vital role then one can guess what is going on throughout the country. In this study, the researcher has found that television talk shows are mostly elite centric, male centric and city centric. There is a little public participation in the talk shows. Discussions of talk shows are ill informed and polarised to the political parties, with a few exceptions. Politicians, business people and other decision makers decide what the issues and discussions are

Exploring the antioxidant and antimicrobial potential of three common seaweeds of Saint Martin's Island of Bangladesh

Antioxidants, which have long been deemed an indispensable guardian of human health, play a pivotal role in bolstering the body's defense against a plethora of diseases. Three well-recognized seaweeds in Bangladesh, including Caulerpa racemosa, Padina tetrastromatica, and Hypnea musciformis, were subjected to meticulous analysis to reveal their phytochemical composition, antioxidant activity, and antimicrobial efficacy using advanced spectroscopic and disc diffusion methods. Intriguingly, we observed that C. racemosa emerges as frontrunners, possessing a substantial arsenal of phenol (143.08 ± 18.51 mg gallic acid equivalent g─1) and flavonoid (63.79 ± 2.16 mg rutin equivalent g─1). More fundamentally, C. racemosa exhibits a notable enrichment in the content of tannin (73.58 mg RE g─1) and chlorophyll (13.50 mg g─1), as well as, antioxidant capacity (4457.67 μg g─1). P. tetrastromatica, on the other hand, displayed commendable effectiveness in scavenging the DPPH radical, with percentages ranging from 53.98 to 62.17%. In terms of hydroxyl radical (OH•) scavenging activity, C. racemosa exhibited the highest efficacy at 400 g mL─1. Fascinatingly, C. racemosa exhibited an impressive antioxidant potential, as evidenced by its exceptionally low IC50 value of 5.58 μg mL−1 for OH• scavenging, whereas P. tetrastromatica showed impressively low value of 0.96 μg mL−1 for DPPH scavenging. Although the three seaweeds demonstrated limited efficacy against a spectrum of five human pathogenic bacteria, their potential as abundant sources of antioxidants remains unscathed. Notably, heatmap and PCA analysis revealed that C. racemosa and P. tetrastromatica emerge as the leading contender for studied antioxidant compounds, demonstrating their proclivity for antioxidant extraction, a trait that could be exploited for large-scale production of these valuable compounds

400-407Mixed Layer Depths (MLD) on the basis of temperature and density were calculated for the Bay of Bengal area. Long term archive data from World Ocean Database (WOD09) were used for calculating MLD in the study area. During the pre monsoon period the lowest thermal MLD was observed in the mid basin area with a value of 25 m. But within the monsoon period MLD was gradually increase in all area up to a layer of 50 m. In the post monsoon period MLD increase in the upper Northern region and during winter period highest MLD of 95 m was observed. In this time it creates a high depressed zone in this area. Density oriented Mixed Layer was found thinner for the whole year. It was observed as 5 m in the upper Northern part, but southern area MLD change with season to season and MLD show highest 65m in the winter monsoon and lowest 20 m pre monsoon period. Surface current flows of the ocean and sea surface temperature (SST) seem to control to change the MLD with seasonality, which was also discussed for an annual cycle

Refractory Ocular Behçet’s Disease: Outcome of Low Dose Infliximab

A 40-year-old woman had been suffering of many symptoms of Behçet’s disease (BD) since her childhood without being diagnosed. She had recurrent mouth ulcers and from the age of 21 vulva ulcers followed by loss of vision due to central retinitis and later also ankle arthritis. At the age of 31, uveitis due to BD was diagnosed. The fact that BD is often not recognized in Bangladesh explains the marked delay in her diagnosis. The initial central retinitis responded well to oral glucocorticoids, azathioprine and cyclosporine, but in the course of time she became refractory to these agents. Considering her financial constraints, low dose Infliximab (3mg/kg) was used resulting in a remarkable but temporal improvement, she came in remission by using 5mg/kg regimen with increased interval time. We summarize the treatment options for ocular involvement in BD patients Conclusions: In countries like Bangladesh diagnosis of Behçet’s disease can be delayed. Early cooperation of dermatologists and eye surgeons with rheumatologists is necessary. Most cases of resistant ocular BD can nowadays be successfully treated with anti TNF-agents. Promising results are published with other biologics for refractory and multi-resistant cases
