Influence of point defects on magnetic vortex structures

We employed micro-Hall magnetometry and micromagnetic simulations to investigate magnetic vortex pinning at single point defects in individual submicron-sized permalloy disks. Small ferromagnetic particles containing artificial point defects can be fabricated by using an image reversal electron beam lithography process. Corresponding micromagnetic calculations, modeling the defects within the disks as holes, give reasonable agreement between experimental and simulated pinning and depinning field values

Transformation bending device emulated by graded-index waveguide

We demonstrate that a transformation device can be emulated using a gradient-index waveguide. The effective index of the waveguide is spatially varied by tailoring a gradient thickness dielectric waveguide. Based on this technology, we demonstrate a transformation device guiding visible light around a sharp corner, with low scattering loss and reflection loss. The experimental results are in good agreement with the numerical results.Comment: This paper is published at Optics Express 20, 13006 (2012

    VirtualEMF: a Model Virtualization Tool

    Get PDF
International audienceSpecification of complex systems involves several heterogeneous and interrelated models. Model composition is a crucial (and complex) modeling activity that allows combining different system perspectives into a single cross-domain view. Current composition solutions fail to fully address the problem, presenting important limitations concerning efficiency, interoperability, and/or synchronization. To cope with these issues, in this demo we introduce VirtualEMF: a model composition tool based on the concept of a virtual model, i.e., a model that do not hold concrete data, but that redirects all its model manipulation operations to the set of base models from which it was generated

    Transformation Optics for Plasmonics

A new strategy to control the flow of surface plasmon polaritons at metallic surfaces is presented. It is based on the application of the concept of Transformation Optics to devise the optical parameters of the dielectric medium placed on top of the metal surface. We describe the general methodology for the design of Transformation-Optical devices for surface plasmons and analyze, for proof-of-principle purposes, three representative examples with different functionalities: a beam shifter, a cylindrical cloak and a ground-plane cloak.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figure

Experimental Quantum Chemistry: A Hammett-inspired Fingerprinting of Substituent Effects

    Get PDF
The quantum mechanically calculable Q descriptor is shown to be a potent quantifier of chemical reactivity in complex molecules – it shows a strong correlation to experimentally derived field effects in non-aromatic substrates and Hammett σm and σp parameters. Models for predicting substituent effects from Q are presented and applied, including on the elusive pentazolyl substituent. The presented approach enables fast computational estimation of substituent effects, and, in extension, medium-throughput screening of molecules and compound design. An experimental dataset is suggested as a candidate benchmark for aiding the general development and comparison of electronic structure analyses. It is here used to evaluate the experimental quantum chemistry (EQC) framework for chemical bonding analysis in larger molecules

Zeta Determinant for Laplace Operators on Riemann Caps

The goal of this paper is to compute the zeta function determinant for the massive Laplacian on Riemann caps (or spherical suspensions). These manifolds are defined as compact and boundaryless D−D-dimensional manifolds deformed by a singular Riemannian structure. The deformed spheres, considered previously in the literature, belong to this class. After presenting the geometry and discussing the spectrum of the Laplacian, we illustrate a method to compute its zeta regularized determinant. The special case of the deformed sphere is recovered as a limit of our general formulas.Comment: 19 pages, 1 figur
