International Price Relationship and Volatility Transmission Between Stock Index and Stock Index Futures

This study investigates the International price relationship and volatility transmissions betweenstock index and stock index futures of Malaysia, Hong Kong and Japan. Vector Autoregression(VAR) GJR-GARCH model was applied to the nine years daily price. Japanesemarkets are the main information producer to the market price changes. International marketinterdependence only affected the domestic volatility transmission of spot and futuresmarket in Hong Kong. Asymmetric effects exist in all markets and the volatility persistence ineach market is high. Finally, the overall conditional correlation estimates for spot and futuresmarkets are higher in the unrestricted model form compared to the restricted modelform

Supply Chain Strategy in Initial Public Offering in Malaysia: A Review of Long-Run Share Price Performance

    Get PDF
Abstract- The paper examined the current status of research regarding the long-run share price performance of initial public offerings (IPO) in Malaysia. The review on previous ‎studies was divided into the followings: underwriter reputation, earnings management, and board variables‎. The paper found that ‎there was a noticeable poor long-run performance, and Malaysian IPOs were lesser than others from developed nations. The evidences of the long-run performance were inconsistent. This paper pinpointed significant factors that could ‎influence the ‎‎long-run share price performance in the Malaysian IPO market. New areas for future research were also suggested

A two-component CFD studies of the effects of H2, CNG, and diesel blend on combustion characteristics and emissions of a diesel engine

Numerical simulations were conducted on a Ricardo Hydra diesel engine which is single cylinder engine and uses direct injection method. This study was performed by using a two-dimensional CFD code to examine the combustion characteristics and emissions of a diesel engine in diesel-CNG and diesel-H2 dual-fuel operations, as well as in the diesel-CNG-H2 tri-fuel operation at various air-fuel ratios. The results indicate that the peak in-cylinder pressure and peak temperature were increased with the addition of gaseous fuels at low and medium values of exceeds air. Compared with Diesel-H70-N30 for tri-mode and Diesel-H2 for dual mode, it is observed that there were no effects on the peak temperature at high exceed air. At 2.4 exceed air, the peak pressure increases by means of adding the limit value of hydrogen, such as H30-N70 and H50-N50, to CNG and it begins to decrease with H70-N30 and H2-Diesel operations. Diesel-H2-CNG operations decrease CO/CO2 emissions compared with Diesel-CNG operation and decrease NO emission compared with Diesel-H2 operation at every exceed air. The reduction in CO/CO2 emissions was suggested at high hydrogen fraction in CNG (H70-N30) with all exceeds air whereas low hydrogen fraction in CNG (H30-N70) can repress uncontrolled hydrogen combustion and further limit the increment of NO emission

Is gender a factor contributing to the natural variations in the accumulation of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn) by the green-lipped mussel Perna viridis ?

    Get PDF
The concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn were determined in mantles plus gills, gonads and the remaining soft tissues of males and females from a single population of the green-lipped mussel Perna viridis. In addition, the metal concentrations were determined in the total soft tissues of males and females mussels collected from 15 sampling sites in Malaysia. Females generally accumulated higher concentrations of metal than the males but the difference was not significant (P>0.05). The correlation coeffients show higher R-values in the females than in the males. Although in the differences in the metal concentrations of the tissues were not significant (P<0.05), gender was still an important factor in contributing to the variations of the concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in the soft tissues of P.viridis as were shown by multiple stepwise regression analysis

The impact of anthropogenic activities on heavy metal (Cd, Cu, Ph and Zn) pollution: Comparison of the metal levels in the green-lipped mussel perna viridis (Linnaeus) and in the sediment from a high activity site at Kg. Pasir Puteh and a relatively low activity site at Pasir Panjang

It has been a common practice to select different environmental backgrounds in biomonitoring studies of heavy metal contamination (Yap et al. 2002a; 2002b; 2003a; 2003b). It is expected to obtain different pollutant concentrations in a selected biomonitoring agent. An interesting question that may arise here is 'Are all heavy metal levels high in a known high human activity sampling site ?' This question comes to mind since most researchers would assume a positive answer while ecotoxicologists would like to know which metal(s) is(are) high (maybe not all heavy metals) at that sampling site. The environmental background is closely related to the description of the sampling site which can range from an uncontaminated or pristine site to a highly contaminated site that is known to receive a lot of anthropogenic inputs

Species diversity of macrobenthic invertebrates in the Semenyih River, Selangor, Peninsular Malaysia

    Get PDF
This study was carried out on one of the rivers in Peninsular Malaysia, the Semenyih River. The river supported diverse macrobenthic invertebrates in which the upstream sampling stations were dominated by Crustacea, Ephemeroptera, Odonata, Gastropoda, Trichoptera, Coleoptera and Diptera while Hirudinea and Oligocheata were the benthic organisms found predominant at downstream stations. Some caddisJly species such as Microstenum similior and Amphipsyche meridiana were found to be potential bioindicators for a cleanecosystem. The resistant worm, Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri, was found to be the most dominant species at the downstream of the river and is considered a potential bioindicator for a polluted ecosystem. Low species diversity and occurrence of resistant worm species indicated that the downstream of the river deteriorated due to water quality degradation. As rapid increases in population growth, industrialization and agricultural activities in Malaysia have caused serious problems to the water quality of many rivers, the macrobenthic invertebrates found along the rivers can be used as bioindicators of the ecotoxicological effects of river pollution in Malaysia

Effect of operating temperature on direct recycling aluminium chips (AA6061) in hot press forging process

    Get PDF
A method of solid-state recycling aluminum alloy using hot press forging process was studied as well as the possibility of the recycled chip to be used as secondary resources. This paper presents the results of recycled AA6061 aluminium alloy chip using different operating temperature for hot press forging process. Mechanical properties and microstructure of the recycled specimens and as-received (reference) specimen were investigated. The recycled specimens exhibit a good potential in the strength properties. The result for yield strength (YS) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) at the minimum temperature 430˚C is 25.8 MPa and 27.13 MPa. For the maximum operating temperature 520˚C YS and UTS are 107.0MPa and 117.53 MPa. Analysis for different operating temperatures shows that the higher temperatures giving better result on mechanical properties and finer microstructure. The strength of recycled specimen increases due to the grain refinement strengthening whereas particle dispersion strengthening has minor effects. In this study, the recycled AA6061 chip shows the good potential in strengthening as the comparison of using only 17.5% of suggested pressure (70.0/400.0) MPa, the UTS exhibit 35.8% (117.58/327.69) MPa. This shows a remarkable potential of direct recycling by using hot press forging process

Application of rasch model in measuring the quality of health and wellness final exam questions

    Get PDF
The assessment of the Health and Wellness module includes two components, 60% for the continuous examination and 40% for the final examination paper. In this paper we discussed the performance of students in the final examination paper which comprises 40 MCQs (MCQ). The 40 MCQ were constructed based on the Table of Test Specification developed by the subject matter experts at the faculty. The difficulty level of the questions was based on the 5:3:2 proportions. This ratio produces 20 MCQ at lower difficulty level, 12 MCQ at moderately difficult and 8 MCQ at higher difficulty. Results of 764 students were analysed based on their ability and item difficulty of the 40 MCQ using RaschWinsteps 4.01 software. Person Item Map Distribution (PIDM) showed that the item measure is between -3.62 to +4.97 logits and the person measure is between -1.28 to +4.09 logits. This finding indicated that while person ability exceeded item difficulty at the lower logit continuum of the Rasch model, at the upper logit continuum, some items are at higher difficulty level compared to students’ ability. Item difficulty and separation indices statistics for both person and item are also of concern in this study. To ensure and enhance reliability and validity of the questions, it is highly recommended that the subject matter experts review the questions before applying it again in another exam or depositing it in the item bank system
